[4K] Walking at Tempelhofer Park, Berlin, Germany
Tempelhofer Feld historically was an area in Berlin used for military practice, and as a parade ground of the Berlin garrison. It belonged to the Tempelhofer uplands on the Teltow plateau, in the south of Berlin. Tempelhofer Feld is closely linked to German military and aviation history, as well as German soccer history. Today it is a developed area, with the exception of the Tempelhofer Feld park on the site of the former Tempelhof Airport.

The people of Berlin are delighted with their new, yet old-established recreation area. The former Tempelhof airport is now a public park – and not for the first time in its history.
Originally the Tempelhofer Feld was a parade ground. At the weekends and on public holidays, as soon as the military cleared the site, the locals would swarm in their thousands to Tempelhof to enjoy their leisure time. Whole families would come with their baskets full of food, deckchairs and sunshades to have picnics there. At the beginning of the 1920s, Tempelhof airport was built on the site.
After the airport closed in 2008, the city of Berlin reclaimed the 386-hectare open space and one of the world's largest buildings in a central location for public use. Today, the area has a six-kilometre cycling, skating and jogging trail, a 2.5-hectare BBQ area, a dog-walking field covering around four hectares and an enormous picnic area for all visitors.
The Tempelhofer Park offers school classes plenty of room to let off steam, wander around discovering and investigating. Guided tours lasting 2.5 hours on various subjects are offered in the protected building (the largest in Europe by surface area). School pupils up to the age of 14 years pay 6 Euros, from 15 years 8 Euros. If the group consists of 10 or more pupils, please register by telephone beforehand.
On windy days, Tempelhofer Freiheit not only offers families the best place to fly a kite, but due to the many stretches of asphalt that were once runways among other things, and in the absence of any motorised transport, athletes big and small can safely practise skateboarding, in-line skating and bicycling or unicycling here. Dogs can also romp to their heart's content - without disturbing other visitors. Three fenced-in dog runs ensure that animals and humans won't get in each other's way. You can marvel at even more urban nature in the urban gardening section, where residents and others grow lettuce, carrots and tomatoes on raised beds.

Tempelhofer Feld in Berlin, Germany
Berlin, Germany is only one of more than 100 places named Berlin around the world. Dive into them:
So tickt Berlin! Abenteuerspielplatz Tempelhofer Feld
Folge 10. Sommer in Berlin.

TEMPELHOF FELD | airport park
Part of what I enjoy about this project is getting a window into other points of view. When I visit Tempelhof Feld I see the openness and emptiness. Because I grew up in the Midwest in the US openness isn’t so special. I seek out the parks in Berlin that are labyrinthine, where you can get lost and feel nested in nature.
From Bianca’s point of view, she is amazed by this large open space full of possibility located in the middle of the city. She grew up in Paris where these types of spaces do not exist. A friend from Dehli, India expressed the same excitement about the open space of Templehof Feld.
It is also a space that is both standing still and in flux. I spent some time there collecting moments. In October, the city brought in sheep to graze and eat down the grass. I wish I had been able to capture that as well but you can just imagine the scene as you watch this video.
PARK PROJECT BERLIN is a multimedia museum, inviting intercultural dialogue: through photographs, videos and conversations the Park Project Berlin explores the importance of public space and the role that parks play in our society.

:) #FollowMeAround

Tempelhofer Feld is one of the nicest recreation treasures Berlin has. It was originally built as an airport in the 1920's, but after 2008 it became one of the most popular open spaces for Berliners and visitors, and for big events as well. No matter what season of the year it is, there’s always something nice to do in this place; alone, with your family, even with your dog. Get to know it with me, come #FollowMeAround :)

Berlin Tempelhof Airport (German: Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof) (IATA: THF, ICAO: EDDI) was one of the airports in Berlin, Germany. Situated in the south-central Berlin borough of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, the airport ceased operating in 2008 amid controversy, leaving Tegel and Schönefeld as the two main airports serving the city, with the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport still under construction as of 2018.
Tempelhof was designated as an airport by the Ministry of Transport on 8 October 1923. The old terminal was originally constructed in 1927. In anticipation of increasing air traffic, the Nazi government began a massive reconstruction in the mid-1930s. While it was occasionally cited as the world's oldest operating commercial airport, the title was disputed by several other airports, and is no longer an issue since its closure.
Tempelhof was one of Europe's three iconic pre-World War II airports, the others being London's now defunct Croydon Airport and the old Paris – Le Bourget Airport. It acquired a further iconic status as the centre of the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. One of the airport's most distinctive features is its massive, canopy-style roof extending over the apron, able to accommodate most contemporary airliners in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, protecting passengers from the elements. Tempelhof Airport's main building was once among the top 20 largest buildings on earth; in contrast, it formerly had the world's smallest duty-free shop.
Tempelhof Airport closed all operations on 30 October 2008, despite the efforts of some protesters to prevent the closure. A non-binding referendum was held on 27 April 2008 against the impending closure but failed due to low voter turnout. The former airfield has subsequently been used as a recreational space known as Tempelhofer Feld. In September 2015 it was announced that Tempelhof would also become an emergency refugee camp.
The site of the airport was originally Knights Templar land in medieval Berlin, and from this beginning came the name Tempelhof. Later, the site was used as a parade field by Prussian forces, and by unified German forces from 1720 to the start of World War I. In 1909, Frenchman Armand Zipfel made the first flight demonstration in Tempelhof, followed by Orville Wright later that same year. Tempelhof was first officially designated as an airport on 8 October 1923. Deutsche Luft Hansa was founded in Tempelhof on 6 January 1926.

The Tempelhof Airport in Berlin Germany was closed in 2008 as an active airport. It is now a huge 954 acre recreation area for anyone to enjoy with twin runways longer than a mile and taxiways that can be used to go jogging, cycling, roller blading, skateboarding, segwaying and more.
The grass fields between the runways are used for picnicking and flying kites and drones.
The airport was used during the soviet blockade in the late 1940's for the airlift to keep West Berlin alive with food, medicine, coal, and emergency evacuation lifts for the sick and elderly.
The Fernsehturm TV Tower was built by the East Germans in 1965 to show off their technical skills to the West but when the sun came out a huge cross would beam off of the obsevation deck area and the folks in the West would call it the Pope's revenge over the non believers in the East.
The tower is 110 stories tall or so and is the tallest building in Germany. I used it as a beacon to help me figure out where in the city I was.
The Allianz Building that I tried to get a good look at is 410 feet tall about 31 floors high. It is part of the Treptowers Complex near Treptower Park a must visit area in Berlin.

Walking Tempelhofer Feld, former central airport of Berlin, Germany | 4K (sunday in fall)
Walking in the Tempelhofer Feld and enjoying the last sunny days in fall. The area of the Tempelhofer Feld was one of 3 airports of Berlin commonly known for its use during the Berlin Blockade right after the 2nd WW in 1948-1949 (Berliner Luftbrücke). Today the airport area is used as a public park for biking, skating, and bbq, and the terminal building is under cultural heritage management.
