RUSSIA: BURIAL PLOTS ARE IN GREAT DEMAND
Russian/Nat
Wealthy Russians have found a new way to spend their money - preparing for their deaths.
Some of them have been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars purchasing luxury coffins and erecting massive memorials in their own honour.
Sensing a good business opportunity, long-closed graveyards are reopening and charging the rich up to 10-thousand dollars (U-S) for a prime burial plot.
In the bid to satisfy the growing demand for new graves, literally no stone is left unturned.
The Smolensky cemetery in the centre of St Petersburg is a monument to the past riches that the city's wealthy lavished on their funerals and memorials.
Opened in the 18th century, it closed in 1934 for lack of space.
More than 60 years later, the cemetery is open for business again - but this time it's Russia's new rich who are knocking at its gates.
But unlike their forefathers, they're rejecting the typical Gothic headstones in favour of a more contemporary look.
A costly look - some of the massive contemporary monuments cost up to 200-thousand U-S dollars.
Taste has been sacrificed for kitsch.
This man's memorial depicts him holding the keys not of heaven, but of his Mercedes.
Prime burial plots in many Russian city centre cemeteries are being sold for up to 10-thousand U-S dollars.
But the kitsch burial tastes of Russia's new rich come at a cost to those who were buried long ago.
Boris Kuznetsov, a former engineer who has been reduced to begging in the cemetery, sees the arrival of the new-look graves as a sacrilege.
SOUNDBITE:( Russian)
Old graves are knocked down and in their place the very wealthy Russians are buried.
SUPER CAPTION: Boris Kuznetsov, Former engineer
This firm of undertakers in Moscow, called Spiritual Services, has jumped on the bandwagon and is now tailoring its product to the ever more bizarre demands of wealthy clients.
Run by an embalmer who used to work at Lenin's tomb, the funeral parlour offers air-conditioned coffins - for a more comfortable trip to the afterlife.
To be a cool corpse, you'll need around 10-thousand U-S dollars.
But even this undertaker thinks his clients' more extravagant tastes leave something to be desired.
SOUNDBITE:( Russian)
Working in this funeral parlour, I see lots of people who can pay for these coffins. I think the portraits which they bring here for their tombstones look like they've been done in a casino.
SUPER CAPTION: Georgy Tishenko, Manager of Spiritual Services Funeral Parlour
Russia's wealthy continue to build ever more lavish memorials to preserve their memory for posterity.
But they seem to have forgotten that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Walking through the halls of the Winter Palace
The Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was, from 1732 to 1917, the official residence of the Russian monarchs. Today, the restored palace forms part of a complex of buildings housing the Hermitage Museum. Situated between the Palace Embankment and the Palace Square, adjacent to the site of Peter the Great's original Winter Palace, the present and fourth Winter Palace was built and altered almost continuously between the late 1730s and 1837, when it was severely damaged by fire and immediately rebuilt. The storming of the palace in 1917 as depicted in Soviet paintings and Eisenstein's 1927 film October became an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution.
The palace was constructed on a monumental scale that was intended to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. From the palace, the Tsar ruled over 22,400,000 square kilometers (8,600,000 sq mi) (almost 1/6 of the Earth's landmass) and over 125 million subjects by the end of the 19th century. It was designed by many architects, most notably Bartolomeo Rastrelli, in what came to be known as the Elizabethan Baroque style. The green-and-white palace has the shape of an elongated rectangle, and its principal façade is 250 meters (820 ft) long and 30 m (98 ft) high. The Winter Palace has been calculated to contain 1,786 doors, 1,945 windows, 1,500 rooms, and 117 staircases. Following a serious fire, the palace's rebuilding of 1837 left the exterior unchanged, but large parts of the interior were redesigned in a variety of tastes and styles, leading the palace to be described as a 19th-century palace inspired by a model in Rococo style.
In 1905, the Bloody Sunday massacre occurred when demonstrators marched toward the Winter Palace, but by this time the Imperial Family had chosen to live in the more secure and secluded Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo and returned to the Winter Palace only for formal and state occasions. Following the February Revolution of 1917, the palace was for a short time the seat of the Russian Provisional Government, led by Alexander Kerensky. Later that same year, the palace was stormed by a detachment of Red Army soldiers and sailors—a defining moment in the birth of the Soviet state.

Russian Orthodox Church Architecture
A. Dean McKenzie, Professor Emeritus of Art History, presents on Russian Orthodox Church architecture over a period of 2000 years.
Historic Russian Orthodox Cathedrals and Churches from the 11th to the 20th Centuries
February 12, 2013 to August 11, 2013
The photographs of sacred Russian Orthodox sites displayed on this wall and available for digital viewing at the adjacent media station were taken during research trips by Professor A. Dean McKenzie, who retired in 1988 from the University of Oregon's Department of Art History (today's Department of the History of Art and Architecture). Presented here are cathedrals and churches built from the 11th to the 20th centuries in a vast array of architectural styles in locations as diverse as St. Petersburg, Russia, and Unalaska, Alaska—a small city 800 miles southwest of Anchorage in the remote Aleutian Island chain. Structures such as the Cathedral of Saint Vasily the Blessed (popularly known in English as St. Basil's), located on the Red Square in Moscow will be known to many, while others, such as the Church of Saint Nicholas in Juneau, Alaska, will likely be less familiar. St. Basil's represents the culmination of a national style that reached its peak during the 16th century, while the more contemporary Saint Nicholas indicates the extent to which aspects of that style were disseminated on a global scale. Examples of native Russian wooden churches, known as kokoshniki, from which the more grand constructions of later centuries evolved, are included here as well. Despite the multiplicity of sites represented in these photographs, design details closely associated with Russian Orthodox architecture, like tent-shaped roofs, tiered gables, and onion domes, appear frequently.
Professor McKenzie, who received his MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and his PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, taught Medieval art for over twenty years at the U of O before he and his wife, Lucile, generously donated funds to endow the McKenzie Icon Gallery.

What does the biggest monastery in Russia (and Europe) look like?
St. Cyril-Belozersk Monastery in the Vologda Region keeps legacy of Russian tsars.
St. Cyril-Belozersk Monastery was founded in the late 14th century and became the largest monastery not only in our country, but also in Europe. Its total area spans more than 12 hectares and the monastery walls are more than two kilometers long. It also played an important role in Russia’s political affairs.
Ivan the Terrible visited the monastery many times and wished to spend the rest of his days here. His kids and future rulers also spent time here. As a result, St. Cyril-Belozersk Monastery is a vital part of Russian history. In 1924 the monastery was closed and turned into museum. Its main task is to preserve its legacy and buildings.
