Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, Africa
The Auditorio de Tenerife is an auditorium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, it is located on the Avenue of the Constitution in the Canarian capital, and next to the Atlantic Ocean in the southern part of Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Construction began in 1997 and was completed in 2003. The auditorium was inaugurated on 26 September of that year in the presence of Felipe de Borbón, Prince of Asturias, and was later visited by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. The building is framed within the tenets of late-modern architecture of the late 20th century. The majestic profile of the auditorium has become an architectural symbol of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. It is also regarded as the finest modern building in the Canary Islands and one of the most emblematic buildings of Spanish architecture. In March 2008, it was included by the post office in a set of six stamps depicting the most emblematic works of Spanish architecture. In 2011, the image of the Tenerife Auditorium was included in a series of commemorative coins of 5 euros, which displayed the most emblematic symbols of several Spanish cities. It is one of the major attractions of Tenerife and home to the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife.

The Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín (formerly named, but still commonly referred to as, Auditorio de Tenerife), was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava Valls. It is located on the Avenue of the Constitution in the Canarian capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), and next to the Atlantic Ocean in the southern part of Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Construction began in 1997 and was completed in 2003. The auditorium was inaugurated on 26 September of that year with the presence of Felipe de Borbón, Prince of Asturias, and was later visited by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. It is also regarded as the finest modern building in the Canary Islands and one of the most emblematic buildings of Spanish architecture. In March 2008, it was included by the post office in a set of six stamps (Correos) depicting the most emblematic works of Spanish architecture. It is one of the major attractions of Tenerife and home to the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife (Tenerife Symphony Orchestra). As early as 1970, there was agreement that the creation of an auditorium for the islands should proceed. The location in the El Ramonal was apporved in 1977. In 1978 design proposals were solicited for consideration. The project agreed to appoint the architect Antonio Fernández Alba. Later, in 1985, the location of the auditorium was moved to El Chapatal. In 1987, the final design of Antonio Fernández Alba, with collaboration of Vicente Saavedra and Javier Díaz Llanos are unveiled. However soon after, there is a conceptual shift about the type of building and the government abandons the project. In 1989, the government enters into discussion with the architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, who becomes the project architect. In 1991, Valls publicly presented his design. At the time the building was to be located at the end of Avenida Tres de Mayo. In 1992 the government created the Commission for Supervision and Control for the construction of the auditorium. In 1996, the Commission changed the location to the Castillo de San Juan Bautista, located by the sea. Groundbreaking and construction finally began in 1997, twenty years after the initial approval. During 2001 the 17 larger metal panels which form the exterior were installed. In 2002, the concrete and the white exterior trencadis plaster work was completed. In 1997, they started the earth moving works at the final location. Throughout the year 2001, 17 metal parts are placed forming the jacket. In 2002, the exterior concrete, trencadis, and the interior were completed. Much of the surface is covered with white trecadis, with colorful trecadis as decorative elements in the retaining walls of the plaza the building stands on. The Tenerife Auditorium was officially opened by the Prince of Asturias Felipe de Borbón on September 26, 2003. The opening was covered by media from around the world, including newspapers such as the New York Times, Financial Times, The Independent, the Paris Le Monde, and Italy's Corriere della Sera, as well as international magazines such as Elle Decoration, Architecture Today and Marie Claire Maison. The auditorium was visited by former President of the United States Bill Clinton, who visited Tenerife in July 2005 to attend a conference on the role of the island in the Tenerife Atlantic Logistics Platform. This was the first visit by a former U.S. president to the Canary Islands. On January 28, 2011 the Cabildo de Tenerife approved the proposal to rename the building Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín in memory of President of the Canary Islands, Adán Martín Menis, who was the driving force behind the construction of the auditorium in his stage as President of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife (1987-1999). However, many citizens and media were against the name change. Despite the name change of the auditorium most of the population continues to call the building just Auditorio de Tenerife. The Auditorio de Tenerife is situated in a central area of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, near The Avenue of the Constitution, the Parque Marítimo César Manrique and the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The auditorium is located near the Tenerife Tram station. Near the auditorium stand the two Torres de Santa Cruz, which are the tallest buildings in the Canary Islands, and the tallest residential building in Spain until 2010. The auditorium and the towers are the most recognizable and photographed view of the city.

Santa Cruz - Tenerife
The bustling capital city of Santa Cruz is located on the north eastern tip of Tenerife and is home to one of the most historically important harbors in the Atlantic Ocean. The city rapidly developed in the 19th century, as fleets bound for the Americas would regularly stop here, helping to firmly fix this destination on the world map. Today, it is a vibrant and cosmopolitan hive of activity, full of interesting places to visit, attractive architecture, great shopping and an abundance of excellent restaurants. The harbor is a gateway into mainland Spain and a stop off point for cruise liners travelling to the Caribbean.
One great way to explore the city is by taking an open-top bus tour where you can jump on and off, taking in important landmarks en route. Culture is alive and well in Santa Cruz and among the riches on offer are the Auditorio de Tenerife (Auditorium of Tenerife), the Parliament buildings of the Canary Islands, several La Laguna University faculties, not to mention the exciting shopping area in Plaza de España (Square of Spain) on the seafront which leads up to Plaza de la Candelaria (Square of Candelaria), where you can buy international brands at tax free prices. In addition, the tourist board is located in the city and here you can collect maps, street plans and other information.
This capital city is a great place to explore; from the cosmopolitan feel of the exclusive shopping areas to the laid back beach. That is why so many people come here for a day, no matter where they are staying on the island.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, commonly abbreviated as Santa Cruz, is a city and capital of the Canary Islands, the capital of Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and of the island of Tenerife.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the second largest city in the Canary Islands and the main city on the island of Tenerife, with nearly half the island population living in or around it.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located in northeast quadrant of Tenerife, about 210 kilometres (130 mi) off the northwestern coast of Africa within the Atlantic Ocean. The distance to the nearest point of mainland Spain is about 1,300 kilometres (810 mi). Between the 1833 territorial division of Spain and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands, until 1927 when a decree ordered that the capital of the Canary Islands be shared, as it remains at present.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is home to the Parliament of the Canary Islands, the Canarian Ministry of the Presidency (shared on a four-year cycle with Las Palmas), one half of the Ministries and Boards of the Canarian Government, (the other half being located in Gran Canaria), the Tenerife Provincial Courts and two courts of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. There are several faculties of the La Laguna University in Santa Cruz, including the Fine Arts School and the Naval Sciences Faculty. Its harbour is one of Spain's busiest; it comprises three sectors. It is important for commercial and passenger traffic, as well as for being a major stopover for cruisers en route from Europe to the Caribbean. The city also has one of the world's largest carnivals. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife now aspires to become a World Heritage Site, and is the most important of Spain and the second largest in the world.
The main landmarks of the city include the Auditorio de Tenerife (Auditorium of Tenerife), the Santa Cruz Towers (Torres de Santa Cruz) and the Iglesia de la Concepción. Santa Cruz de Tenerife hosts the first headquarters of the Center UNESCO in the Canary Islands. In recent years the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has seen the construction of a significant number of modern structures and the city's skyline is the sixth in height across the country, only behind Madrid, Benidorm, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao.
