Uploaded on Aug 5, 2014
This is from the project De:tune Järva, which was commissioned by Tensta Konsthallen in Stockholm Sweden in early 2014. Under the direction of Tarek Atoui (Lebanon/France) a group of 20 musicians representing a broad cultural and ethnic set of traditions was brought together and trained in both improvised musical composition and performance. The group performed three times at the Stockholm Music and Arts festival following a series of sessions where materials were composed and recorded and then remixed and incorporated back into the repertoire. This is a small jam from a practice session prior to the third performance on Sunday 3 August 2014. Taha Elneshily is playing violin, Fillip from the group Mugam is playing beats and Victor Lisinski is playing laptop and programming. The didgeridoo is from an earlier performance by the same group played by James Barrett and sampled by Victor.

Maria Lind (Tensta Konsthall) - Public Assets Conference
Maria Lind, Director of the Tensta Konsthall, speaking at 'Public Assets: small-scale arts organisations and the production of value', presented by Common Practice and Andrea Phillips.
Tensta Konsthall is a centre for contemporary art in Stockholm working in both an international and local context. In this presentation Maria describes the wide range of public and private activities undertaken by the organisation, showing how it is shaped by the artists and theorists who come to work there as well as the area of Tensta itself and its community.

Common Practice and Andrea Phillips present Public Assets: small-scale arts organisations and the production of value, a one-day conference at Central Saint Martins to discuss the ways in which small-scale arts organisations produce artistic value beyond measurability and quantification, provide spaces for public experience extra to the market, and in so doing contribute importantly to cultural wealth. In this way, small-scale arts organisations provide ample evidence of the necessity to build rather than diminish state funding for the arts as a core public asset.
Speakers including Jesús Carrillo, Kodwo Eshun, Charlotte Higgins, Maria Lind, Andrea Phillips and Lise Soskolne address the ways in which it is possible to assert a non-financialised ethos within the current funding landscape of the arts, and examine national and international practices that are successfully working within the new funding conditions.

Public Talk: Maria Lind and Marie-Louise Ekman
During the public program for the exhibition The Fabric of Felicity curator Maria Lind and artist Marie-Louise Ekman will acquaint the audience with Ekman’s artistic practice and strategy.
Images on garments usually reflect features that we want to help us stand out from the crowd, even if not for long: our sense of humor, our political views, our love for a particular mass culture phenomenon. In her limited series of shirts designed specifically for The Fabric of Felicity, the Swedish artist Marie-Louise Ekman went further and drew an encyclopedia on a garment. The intended wearer identifies themselves with the world and humanity rather than with particular objects or images. This approach is characteristic for Ekman, who rethinks sexual and social roles using the language of comics. Danish researcher Lars Bang Larsen places Marie-Louise Ekman alongside contemporaries who “made the sign ‘woman’ a seemingly endless concept.” Ekman’s work affirms not so much the concept of universal equality as the inalienable right of all people to look ridiculous and to use an important tool for regulating mental health: self-deprecation.
Maria Lind (b. 1966, Stockholm, Sweden) is a curator, writer, and educator based in Stockholm. She is the director of Tensta konsthall, Stockholm, and the artistic director of the 11th Gwangju Biennale. She was director of the graduate program, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (2008–2010) and director of Iaspis in Stockholm (2005–2007). From 2002–2004 she was the director of Kunstverein München. Currently she is professor of artistic research at the Art Academy in Oslo. She has contributed widely to newspapers, magazines, catalogues, and other publications. Lind lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
Marie-Louise Ekman (b. 1944, Stockholm, Sweden) is an artist and film director. Since the late 1960s, Ekman has been involved in the struggle for women’s rights on a variety of fronts, from fine art and theater to newspaper op-eds on socially important topics. In 1984, she became the first female professor at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. She lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

Tensta Connection
We redefine the position of Tensta, putting it in the centre of Stockholm instead of in the periphery. With four different colours, we not only build a structure of around 490 000 000 square meters but we also enable all of us to inhabit new mental territories.
