Road Trip #288 - US-90 West - I-10 Exit 869: Bridge City through Beaumont, Texas
Road Trip #288 - US Highway 90 - I-10 Exit 869: Bridge City through Beaumont, Texas
Since this video is really about US Highway 90, we continue along the US-90/I-10 concurrency at warp speed until we get to the city of Beaumont, where US-90 travels through town. Here, we slow down and see the town.
At exit 855A, we leave I-10 and head into downtown Beaumont. Beaumont was founded as a town in 1835. The early European-American settlement had an economy based on the development of lumber, farming, and port industries. A big change occurred in 1901 with the Spindletop gusher, which demonstrated the potential of the huge oil field. With Spindletop, several energy companies developed in Beaumont, and some continue. The area rapidly developed as one of the major petro-chemical refining areas in the country. Along with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. Beaumont is home of Lamar University, a national Carnegie Doctoral Research university with 14,966 students, including undergraduates and post graduates. Over the years, several corporations have been based in this city, including Gulf States Utilities which had its headquarters in Beaumont until its takeover by Entergy Corporation in 1993. GSU's Edison Plaza headquarters is still the tallest building in Beaumont.
Prior to the birth of the Interstate Highway system in 1956, the US Highways were the main method of cross-country automobile travel, and in Beaumont, some reminders still remain here on the Old Spanish Trail. Vintage motels and gas stations still remain on what was once the most heavily traveled east-west corridor in the southern United States. Of special note is a former Alamo Plaza Hotel Courts on the right, originally opened in 1938, now operating as the Deluxe Inn. This was one of their 29 locations, and it still retains the unique Alamoesque facade. As I've mentioned in other videos, as a child, I spent many summer weekends at the Alamo Plaza in Gulfport, Mississippi, and it's interesting to see that some of these are still standing. We'll see another one later on in this series.
More about the Alamo Plaza and other vintage hotels:
Some points of interest in Beaumont: Since 1907, Beaumont has been home of the South Texas State Fair and Rodeo, held at Ford Park during March. It is the second-largest fair in the state, attracting more than 500,000 visitors in 2009. The fair features a livestock show, a commercial exhibition, a carnival midway and numerous food choices. The Fair moved from the Fair Park Coliseum to Ford Park in 2004, a new, larger facility on the west end of Beaumont. The fair was previously held in the fall but was moved to spring after hurricanes Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008 caused its cancellation twice within three years. The YMBL Championship Rodeo is held at Ford Park during the South Texas State Fair. The rodeo is an annual event and is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Admission to the rodeo is included in fair admission.
The Gusher Marathon, organized in 2010 by the local nonprofit Sports Society for American Health, is the city's first annual marathon. The Gusher takes place in March and includes a 5K, half marathon and full marathon. The course begins at the Montagne Center of Lamar University and tours Downtown and Lamar before returning to the Montagne.
The Beaumont Jazz & Blues Fest is a Jazz festival held in downtown Beaumont since 2005.
The Boomtown Film and Music Festival is a film and music festival that began in 2008 to replace the Spindletop Film Festival.
Dog Jam is a rock concert held annually at Ford Park.
Each year, a July 4th celebration is held in downtown Beaumont. The celebration includes live music in and around Riverfront Park, a concert by the Symphony of Southeast Texas in the Julie Rogers Theatre, followed by a fireworks display viewed from Riverfront Park.
Each Monday starting in March, the City of Beaumont provides live music and seating at the Event Centre in downtown Beaumont. Ten vendors feature a wide choice of food selections.
On the first Saturday of December, downtown hosts the Beaumont Downtown Winter Parade. The parade features floats that travel down Main, College and Pearl streets. In recent years the parade has also featured a lighted boat parade that travels down the Neches River; spectators can watch from Riverfront Park.

TEXAS ROAD TRIP - NEW YORK TO SAN ANTONIO
Circa January 1977.
This was the second trip to Texas, the first one being taken by Father McKenzie and Farther Kowloon by bus to visit Cardinal Kaplinski shortly after he began attending school in San Antonio This time Father Kowloon was so kind as to use his vehicle to transport Kaplinski back to Trinity University after his winter break in New York. Of course the three of us being together was a fun time. Donna Summers and Hank Williams played endlessly on the Chevy Nova's 8-track stereo. Touring around San Antonio, the sights and the food. Climbing Enchanted Rock after an ice storm. A trip across the border to Mexico. The Alamo. Tagging a water tower. Just goofing around together. On the ride home Father Kowloon managed to do a 360 on the ice covered highway, coming out of it without incident, the car continuing on its path down the road uninterrupted. Those days are now over.

25 Best Places to Visit in the USA - Travel Video
Comprised of 50 states, the USA occupies an area that’s only just marginally smaller than Europe. It’s in this vast country that you will find an unbelievably diverse array of natural landscapes, cityscapes, people and cultures. From the tropical islands of Hawaii to the desert landscape of the Grand Canyon, as well as the multicultural cities such as Chicago and New York City, you’ll never be stuck for destinations to discover. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in the USA:
DART Dallas Area Rapid Transit
Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is a transit agency serving the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex of Texas. It operates buses, light rail, commuter rail, and high-occupancy vehicle lanes in Dallas TX USA and twelve of its suburbs. DART was created in 1983 to replace a municipal bus system and funded expansion of the region's transit network through a sales tax levied in member cities. DART's light rail system is the longest in the United States, at over 93 miles (149.7 km), and began operation in 1996. DART operates the Trinity Railway Express between Dallas Texas and Ft Worth Texas, through an interlocal agreement with Trinity Metro. The agency also operates the Dallas Streetcar and provides funding for the non-profit McKinney Avenue Streetcar.
The DART light rail system comprises 93 miles (149.7 km) between its four lines — the Red Line, the Blue Line, the Orange Line and the Green Line. According to NCTCOG transit statistics, DART's light rail system had a daily ridership of 109,511 average trips per weekday in October 2012. The system uses light rail trains manufactured by Kinki Sharyo, with all trains being converted to Super LRVs (SLRVs) which feature level boarding (especially convenient for strollers and wheelchairs) and higher passenger capacity.[17] All 163 of DART's light rail vehicles have been converted and are now SLRVs.[18]
Before the 1983 election, DART had a plan for 160 miles (257.5 km) of rail. After the election, the plan was pared down to 147 miles (236.6 km) when Duncanville, Grand Prairie and Mesquite, which would have had rail lines, opt to not join the agency. DART chose light rail transit as its primary mode of rail transportation in 1984. The plan was pared down again to 93 miles (149.7 km) before the 1988 bond vote. After the vote, the agency again pared the regional rail system to 84 miles (135.2 km); 66 miles (106.2 km) of light rail and 18 miles (29 km) of commuter rail. As of August 2014, DART boasts four lines, and the extension of the Orange line to DFW airport is complete.
The following lines are active:
Red Line (Opened in 1996, completed in its current state in 2002)
Blue Line (Opened in 1996, completed in its current state in 2016)
Green Line (Opened in 2009, completed in its current state in 2010)
Orange Line (Opened in 2012, completed in its current state in 2014)[19]
On December 18, 2000, DART opened the first public subway station in Texas. Cityplace station is served by the Red, Blue, and Orange Lines.[20]

Brashear is an unincorporated community located on Interstate Highway 30 and Farm to Market Road 2653 in west central Hopkins County, Texas, United States. Although it is unincorporated, Brashear has a post office (with the ZIP code of 75420), church, farm buildings, a radio building, and other buildings.
History of Brashear...
Brashear was founded in 1868, and it was named for Joseph Brashear, who surveyed the town site with settlement and foundation. The area was part of the Wise Ranch in 1898, when G. W. Mahoney bought the ranch, divided it into small farms, laid out the town site, and donated land for a school, a church, and a cemetery. A post office was established at Brashear in 1899, with W. G. Crain as postmaster. A school opened the same year, and in 1905 it had an enrollment of 149.
By 1914, the town had Baptist, Christian, and Methodist churches, a bank, a newspaper, a telegraph connection, and a reported population of 400. Its population was estimated at 300 in the mid-1920s and 350 in the late 1940s. In 1948 the town had six stores, four churches, a two-teacher school, and a cotton gin.
The population declined during the 1960s to 280 and continued to be reported at that level in 1990 and 2000. In the late 1980s, Brashear had four churches, a factory, a post office, and a number of scattered houses.
