Bangkok, Thailand Travel Guide: Grand Palace, Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho Tour + AMAZING Thai Food
This is our city guide and a full-day tour of Bangkok during our Thailand Trip. Most of Bangkok's notable historical and cultural sites can be seen in a day or two. We partnered with Thai Tour Guide in a six-hour tour of the city that included the Grand Palace, a private long-boat ride on the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho and a tasty Thai food lunch.
Our tour guide, Joy and a driver picked us up in a large van to transport us the different sites in a stress-free manner. First, we head to, The Grand Palace, the cities most famous landmark. It is a complex of buildings and has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782. Most tourists come to see Wat Phra Kaew, which houses the famous 14th century Emerald Buddha. This is Thailand's most sacred site, and out of respect, men and women, must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves. Young children are exempt from this rule.
After touring the Grand Palace, we head to the pier close by to take a long-tail boat cruise on the Chao Phraya River. Before boarding, our private boat we pick up delicious Thai ice tea, coffee, and some traditional Thai sweets. The ride from the long-tail boasts beautiful views of the Grand Palace and city skyline before heading to the traditional canals.
After the ride, we grab a quick lunch at the Krua Khun Kung at the Navy Club of Bangkok. Some of the highlights of the meal include a huge mango smoothie, Tom Yong Goong soup, and squid with salty egg.
We then make our way in the air-conditioned van to Wat Pho (Wat Po or The Temple of The Reclining Buddha), a Buddhist temple complex south of the Grand Palace. A must for any first-time visitor to Bangkok, it is famed for its giant reclining Buddha that measures 46 meters long and is completely covered in gold leaf.
The tour also included a visit to Bangkok's Flower Market, but by this time our two batteries were drained from the filming. The market is not be missed either and gives you a glimpse of the importance of flowers in Thai culture.
To learn more about Thai Tour Guide visit: We highly recommend Joy, who was not only extremely knowledgable but compassionate and accommodating to our special needs as a family with three young children.

The people of Thailand have a gentle kindness about them. They're infectiously positive, steeped in tradition, incredibly proud of their country, and the reason Thailand has been given the nickname, The Land of a Thousand Smiles.
Thailand is a tropical country that sits in South East Asia, It's home to nearly 70 million people and until 1949 was known as Siam. It was then the decision was made to rename the country, Thailand. Thai translating as free, so The Land of the Free. If you look into its history, it has a good reason to own this title. This South East Asian nation is the only country in the region to have avoided colonialism. Remaining a sovereign country in its own right, something that the Thai people are very proud of. Thailand is a noticeably Buddhist country. With peace and positivity at the forefront of their national identity, that welcomes all other religious beliefs, allowing for the full freedom of expression. Over the past two decades Westerners have been lured to Thailand, and now it caters for every type of tourists, from cheap hostels to five star resorts. But here lies the contradiction, tourism has had a Western influence on the country and we want to see just how much of an effect this is having, on not only the landscape but also Thailand's cultural heritage. We wanted to see how easy it is to find the authentic Thailand. Whether that's in its capital city or a small island off it's coastline.
Most visitors that come to the region fly into Bangkok, and that's exactly what we did. We flew from London Heathrow, where we treated ourselves to an airport lounge. Knowing we only had a short time in Bangkok before heading out to the island, we prioritised our time and booked an transfer through Holiday Extras, from Suvarnabhumi Airport to our accommodation in the city centre. Bangkok is the hub of South East Asia, during the eighties and nineties to Asian investment boom had encouraged more corporations and consequently more people to the capital. Now, around 13% of the country's population live in Bangkok, that's over 8 million people which makes the city busy, and I mean crazy busy. The traffic is insane, people are everywhere. Lights are pulsating, music blaring, exotic smells from street food vendors around the city is quite simply an assault on the senses. And for this reason, a little goes a long way in Bangkok. And just a short stopover here, can be just enough to get a taste of the city.
We've fought through the jet lag and made our way to the Pak Khlong Flower Market, the best way from our hotel was to get a taxi boat. This is something I've learnt to get used to in Bangkok. People, and busyness, everywhere - here goes! Now these boats are loud, cramped and the river can be just as busy as the roads. However, the sights are pretty impressive and it's a great way to see the city. We always recommend downloading Google Maps on any trip and Bangkok is no different. It really helps on this journey where to catch the boat from, and where to get off. The cramped conditions can make getting to the exit difficult with so many people in the way, so if you can, make your way to the end of the boat early. The market entrance is hardly spectacular but what lies ahead is an explosion of colour and smells. People are hard at work, as flowers are symbolic of Thai culture and are often used for the King's celebrations. So we've come to the Pak Klong Dalat Flower Market, flowers are a huge part of Thai culture and this market is actually open 24 hours a day and apparently, the best time to come is at 3am, when all the wholesalers bring the flowers in. Now that might seem early but if you're jet-lagged and wide awake at 3am then it could be the best place to come.
After being impressed by the flowers on show, we thought seeing them in their element would be a good idea, so we headed back up the river and made our way to the Grand Palace.

Bangkok is the capital and most populous city of the Kingdom of Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres. Bangkok an extreme primate city, significantly dwarfing Thailand's other urban centers in terms of importance.
The Asian investment boom in the 1980s and 1990s led many multinational corporations to locate their regional headquarters in Bangkok. The city is now a major regional force in finance and business. It is an international hub for transport and health care, and has emerged as a regional center for the arts, fashion and entertainment. The city is well known for its vibrant street life and cultural landmarks, as well as its notorious red-light districts. The historic Grand Palace and Buddhist temples including Wat Arun and Wat Pho stand in contrast with other tourist attractions such as the nightlife scenes of Khaosan Road and Patpong. Bangkok is among the world's top tourist destinations. It is named the world's most visited city in MasterCard's Global Destination Cities Index, and was named World's Best City for four consecutive years by Travel and Leisure magazine.

Bangkok Travel Tips: 13 Things to Know Before You Go
Things YOU need to know before YOU go to Bangkok in Thailand.
Bangkok is the bustling capital of Thailand with a population of more than 11 million. About 13% of Thailand's population lives in Bangkok. Bangkok was the world’s top tourist destination with 20 Million Tourists in 2017. Bangkok is also known as the Big Mango.
2 - Weather
Hot and Humid! Really hot and humid! Like all the time!
Daytime highs all year are in excess of 30C/86F
Bangkok holds claim to being the hottest city in the world
Not because the highs are the highest, but because it doesn’t cool down at night
Lows range from 21C to 26C ( 70F-79F )
April to October is the wet & hot season
The “cool” and dry season is November to February, like a degree or 2 less on the highs and a few degrees cooler on the lows
3. Getting In
Chances are you’ll be flying in to Bangkok, yes there are buses, and yes there’s a train, and you can take it from Singapore, but most people fly.
2 Airports
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK).
Most international flights go in to BKK
By Rail:
The Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport with the BTS Skytrain system, which is Bangkok’s primary public transportation system. The City Line connects with the BTS Skytrain at Phayathai Station and costs 45 baht from Suvarnabhumi.
By Taxi:
Metered taxis are available from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Bangkok.
4. Getting Around
MRT Subway
Fare varies according to age
People don’t stand in lines. Instead of queuing up, Thais form a crowd. Stand your ground, and get used to a lack of personal space in public places.
Taxis
Notorious for ripping off tourists. Make sure they turn on the meter. It should start at 35 THB. Or download the GrabTaxi app -- like Uber, but cheaper.
Tuk Tuk
A small vehicle with no windows or doors but with a roof and a seat.
Price is always negotiated
Make sure to hold on the handles, tuk tuk drivers can be crazy drivers
Motorbike Taxis
Best to get through traffic
And come with a free massive heart attack!
5. Money
Thai Baht
1 Thai Baht was about $.03 US
Or 33 Baht to 1 USD
In Thailand, there are 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht, and 10 baht coins and 20 baht, 50 baht, 100 baht, and 1,000 baht notes. You may also occasionally see a 10 baht note, although those are no longer printed.
Get it from an ATM, but select “Continue Without Conversion”
6. What to wear
Linen, Rayon, or wicking/quickdry fabrics
DON’T WEAR JEANS -- you’ll combust! Also don’t wear anything lined with Polyester -- it’s as good as wearing a ziplock bag.
Temples and Palaces require you to cover your shoulders and knees.
pay attention to see if others have taken off their shoes. If so, follow suit.
7. Language
Big cities like Chiang Mai and Bangkok have a lot of locals who speak English
Sawadiikaa for females, and Sawadiikrap for males - This is the Thai greeting for hello and goodbye, and is accompanied by the wai gesture.
placing hands palms together at your chest and bowing your head
Also note that adding kaa or krap to any sentence in Thai makes the sentence more polite.
Kapkhunkaa for females, and Kapkhunkrap for males - This means thank you, and it is also often accompanied by the wai gesture.
Chuai buht meter dai mai kaa/krap? - Could you turn on the meter?
Gepdthang noi - Check please.
Mai ao - This verbatim means I'm not getting that, but can generally be used to deny an interest in purchasing anything.
Krungthep - This is the word for Bangkok in Thai. Many people mistakenly assume Bangkok is a Thai word. It's not, and knowing the real word can come in handy.
8. Shopping
9. Food
10. Bug Spray
11. Respect the King and the Royal Family
12. Don’t touch anyone on the head.

Bangkok Travel Guide | Travel Tips for Bangkok Thailand
Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand and attracts tourists from across the globe.
It's vibrancy, culture and warmth coupled with luxurious malls, hotels and tantalizing street food keeps tourists visiting this incredible city over and over again.
Here is my travel guide for Bangkok, Thailand, it will be specially useful for Indians traveling to Bangkok :-
1. AIR TICKET ✈️✈️
Try booking a direct flight in advance, even a low cost carrier like airasia is not a bad idea as the distance between India and Bangkok is just 4-5hrs.
Cost - ₹ 10k to 18k (return ticket)
Air Asia -
2. VISA ????????
It's always better to apply for a visa in India rather than getting a visa on arrival in Bangkok.
It saves a substantial amount of time and money.
Cost - ₹2500 (India) | On arrival visa ₹4000 (2000 Baht)
VSF Visa Website -
3. AREA TO STAY ????????
Sukhomvit is centrally located and has a lots of malls, restaurants, shops, bars and pubs but choose a hotel that's a stone throwing distance from a BTS Sky Train Station.( Nana, Asok etc.)
Location :-
4. HOTEL ????????
There are plenty of options ranging from three star to five star hotels.
All major hotel chains have a property in Bangkok.
Cost - ₹3000 to ₹10,000 (October to February is peak season)
Location of Centre Point Hotel where I stayed :-
5. COMMUTE ????????
Autos and taxis available are easily available but they are reluctant using the meter. ( Meter Rate 35 Baht for first Km then appx 5 Baht thereafter, Waiting 2 Baht a minute)
In my opinion commuting by road is cumbersome as Bangkok has major traffic jams during morning and evening rush hours.
I advise you to travel by BTS Sky Train as it has a wide network with a good coverage to all major tourist destinations.
Fare 16 Baht to 44 Baht.
Website :-
bts.co.th
TIP: Hiring a Cab from the Airport - Hire it from the arrival area, it would cost appx 200 Baht to the city centre.
6. FOOD ????????
Bangkok is known for its amazing Thai Street Food and it's a must try !
Indulge in some Som Tam Salad, Tom Yum Soup, Pad Thai Noodles, Thai Green curry with Jasmine rice and traditional thai ice desserts.
Watch my Bangkok Street Food Video for a complete coverage.
One thing that astonished me is that thai food even at a high end mall is very reasonably priced and sometimes it's even cheaper than the streets.
Terminal 21 Malls food court for example offers meals at around 30 Baht to 45 Baht which is extremely reasonable.
Location :-
If you like Indian food then check out my Indian food buffet video.
I had an amazing time at Maya Indian Restaurant at Hotel Holiday Inn, Sukhomvit, Bangkok.
7. SHOPPING ????️????️
Bangkok trip is incomplete without some serious shopping for clothes, thai souvenirs, cosmetics and electronics.
♥️Pratuman Market -
Wholesale market for clothes but you need to buy three pieces of a particular item to get a wholesale price.
Location :-
♥️Platinum Fashion Mall -
Best place to shop for women clothes and accessories. Four story air conditioned mall with over 1300 shops.
Women Tops and dresses can cost 200 Baht to 400 Baht.
Location :-
♥️Mbk Mall -
Oldest mall of Bangkok where you can buy cloths, mobiles, electronics and a lot more but beware of fake goods.
Location :-
♥️Siam Paragon -
A high end mall with all major luxury brand shops. It has a humongous food court, aquarium and 4D cinema hall worth checking out.
Location :-
♥️Chatuchak Weekend Market -
World's biggest weekend market with over ten thousand stalls. ( Open Saturday and Sundays)
You can get anything to everything.
Location :-
I have made a dedicated video for it, do have a look.
8. MASSAGE ????????
Bangkok is known for its massage, it's cheap and offers complete value for money.
Do indulge yourself in a thai, oil or a foot massage.
Cost - 300-400 Baht (one hour)
9. NIGHTLIFE ????????
Bangkok can be a lots of fun and it's known it's notorious nightlife.
Go Go Bars are extremely popular and dirt cheap.
One can visit Soi Cowboy, Patpong or Nana Entertainment plaza to get the feel.
Location :-
Soi Cowboy
Nana Plaza
Patpong

Welcome to Bangkok, Thailand | DW Documentary
Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok, is unique. This film reveals the best spots: well-known locations, and places off the beaten track.
Our report provides a detailed guide to Asia’s most exciting city. For transportation, visitors and local residents alike can choose from motorized rickshaws, taxis, subways, or the sky train. There are also express boats that ply the Chao Phraya River -- plus long-tail boats, and vessels that make their way through the city's khlongs, or canals. This journey of discovery takes us to the places where Bangkok residents go to rest and relax -- like the island of Ko Samet in the Gulf of Thailand. This is the capital's version of Wannsee Lake in Berlin. You can book a river cruise, or visit one of the trendy open-air bars perched atop high-rise buildings. A lot of younger Bangkok residents have taken up a bold challenge in this car-friendly city: they've switched to bicycles. Many locals enjoy making a bike visit to the village-like central district, near a big bend in the river -- even when the temperature rises above 30-degrees centigrade. On the islands off the coast, there's plenty of sunshine, beautiful beaches, and clear, warm water -- a mix that attracts crowds of Bangkok residents on weekends.
