The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of barely 25 km², and located about 12 km from Kothamangalam, was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. Salim Ali, one of the best known ornithologists, described this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
Blessed with so many natural wonders, Thattekad is a picturesque destination, masked in the glory of abundant flora and fauna. This wonderful place is positioned on the Njiyapilli Hill and is mainly famous for the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named after the great Ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali. This sanctuary was established in the year 1983 by the Kerala Government, on recommendation of Dr. Salim Ali in the early 1930s. This is the most popular bird sanctuary of India and houses about 280 rare species of water and land birds.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary and catch a glimpse of some of the most amazing birds and their landscapes that are hard to overlook. Sprawling over 25 km sq and at the distance of around 60 km towards the north-east of Kochi, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern bank of the Periyar River. In the year 1930, Dr. Salim Ali discovered Thattekad as the richest bird habitat of peninsular India and it was named as a Bird Sanctuary in the year 1983. Since the forest is covered with a huge variety of tropical deciduous and evergreen tree, it offers a safe paradise for birds. Hence, it's an interesting place to visit for birdies and wildlife enthusiasts.

The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary located about 12 km from Kothamangalam, Ernakulam was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala.
Pooyamkutty is a small village in Kuttampuzha panchayat, Ernakulam district. A place situated along Pooyamkutty River, a tributary of the Periyar which is blessed with its natural beauty surrounded by forest abundant with wild animals including elephants, deer...etc.
Bhoothathankettu is a dam and tourist spot in Ernakulam District. It is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Kochi.

Thattekkadu Bird Sanctuary, Ernakulam
Thattekkadu is made up of tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and some grassland patches. This globally acclaimed bird sanctuary owes much of its fame to Dr. Salim Ali, the internationally renowned ornithologist. After his famous bird survey of Travancore in the early 1930s, he reported that this area is extremely rich in bird diversity and that it should be made into a bird sanctuary. Thus his efforts were instrumental in the formation of this sanctuary to a large extent. More than 300 species of birds are found here.
Spread across 25 sq. km. the sanctuary lies between the tributaries of the River Periyar like a peninsula. Birds like Srilankan Frogmouth, Racket tailed Drongo, Bronzed Drongo, Whitebellied Treepie, Shama, Yellow-browed Bulbul, Rufous Babbler, Malabar Parakeet, Whitebellied Blue Flycatcher, Malabar Grey Hornbill, are some of the birds that can be easily seen here.
