When entering an abbey you feel immediately: this is not just a building. An abbey owes its soul to the monks who are living there. They are so to speak, the living stones of it. The Monks and their abbey are one. It's therefore easy to understand why building a new abbey is so radical for them. However, large and irreversible cracks in the building left the monks of the abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren without any choice.

And hope to be able to pick it up when they say. But if you don't live in Belgium, your only option is to show up and pray for the best. That's what we did.

Eine kleine Marke aus Belgien wurde im Internet auf mehreren Bier-Ranking-Seiten zum „Besten Bier der Welt gewählt.Gebraut wird sie von 26 zurückgezogen lebenden Klosterbrüdern. Seit 160 Jahren brauen die Trappisten-Mönche im westflämischen Provinzort Vleteren ein dunkles,kräftiges Bier. Wer einen Kasten des begehrten Biers haben will,muss ihn im Kloster bestellen und ihn dann persönlich mit dem Auto abholen. Das Kennzeichen wird notiert - einen zweiten Kasten gibt es dann nicht. Vor dem Kloster bilden sich kilometerlange Schlangen von Bierkennern,die sich das beste Bier der Welt abholen wollen. Die einzige Kneipe der Welt,die das Bier dauerhaft im Angebot hat,ist das Kloster-Café.

Westvleteren Trappist is sold only to individual customers. Every customer agrees not to re-sell the beer to any third party.
In order to allow as many customers as possible to make a reservation, there are several limitations built into the reservation process:
Automobiles:
Attention! It takes at least 60 days before the same automobile can pick up a next order.
f.ex. your last pick up the 15th of October - your next pick up possible from the 15th of December on.
Telephones:
- Attention! It takes at least 60 days before the same telephone number can reach the beer phone for a next reservation.
f.ex. your last phone call for a reservation the 10th of October - your next phone call possible from the 10th of December on.

Seit mehr als 160 Jahren brauen die Trappisten-Mönche im westflämischen Provinzort Vleteren ein dunkles, kräftiges Bier. Nach Aussage amerikanischer Bierkenner ist dieser dunkle Belgier mit seinen zwölf Prozent Alkoholgehalt eines der besten Biere der Welt. Die kleine belgische Abtei St. Sixtus in Westvleteren, die das Starkbier braut, verkauft es nur in begrenzten Mengen und schon gar nicht an Wiederverkäufer. Ein Problem für Bierfans: Nur drei Mönche und drei Laien brauen alle zwei Wochen rund vier Tage lang - die Mönche wollen nicht wegen ihres Biers, sondern wegen ihrer gottesfürchtigen Lebensweise berühmt sein. Durch seine Knappheit ist Westvleteren 12 erst recht zur Rarität geworden. Die insgesamt drei Westvleteren-Sorten werden ausschließlich im Kloster verkauft.

There are 3 types of beer from Saint-Sixtus Abbey, but i only manage to get 8 and 12, blond sold out very soon. But well, i tried the blond beer in the cafe next to the abbey, the food and beer are both nice! and of course, 8 and 12 are so prima too!

Westvleteren 12 is rated as the best beer in the world by ratebeer.com. So when Joby handed me a bottle that he received from a friend I was pretty excited. But we only had one bottle and we usually need a six pack to shoot an episode. That led to a review with a unique twist. I would review the beer by myself with Joby as a host. Will this beer live up to the hype? Is it as good as everyone says it is? Tune in and find out!

Hi. I'm Joby Johnston and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we have a world class beer - and a show with a unique twist - I'm hosting and we have one only panelist - Mr. James Knott the regular host of the Better Beer Authority.
Westvleteren 12, nicknamed Westy 12, is brewed by the Westvleteren Brewery at the Abbey of Saint Sixtus in Belgium. It was rated as the number one beer in the world by ratebeer.com for 2012. This Belgian Quadruple is a tough beer to get a hold of here in the United States. The brewery's website says that it is only available for sale at the brewery and that you need a reservation to purchase it. However, this bottle comes to us via 'Friends of the Show' - thanks Lyndsey and Ben!!
This is one of only seven Trappist breweries in the world. Monks brew about 160,000 cases of this beer per year and proceeds benefit their abbey community. This beer is 10.2 percent ABV and comes in 11.2 oz bottles. The bottles have no labels, so all legal information is squeezed onto the top of the bottle cap.
