Ancient Spanish Monastery in Miami, Florida (4K Ultra HD)
Construction of the Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux has begun in the year 1133 AD in Sacramenia, near Segovia in northern Spain. Completed eight years later in 1141, the Monastery was dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Cistercian monks occupied the Monastery for nearly 700 years. After a social revolution in the 1830s, the Monastery’s Cloisters were seized, sold, and converted into a granary and stable.
In 1925, William Randolph Hearst purchased the Cloisters and the Monastery's outbuildings. The structures were dismantled stone by stone, bound with protective hay, packed in more than 11,000 wooden crates, numbered for identification and shipped to the United States.
It took 19 months and the equivalent of nearly $20 million dollars (in today’s currency) to put the Monastery back together. In 1953 Time magazine called it the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history.

Ancient Spanish Monastery – Presentation – Miami – Audio guide – MyWoWo Travel App
Hi, my name's Marcy, and I'm your personal guide. Along with MyWoWo, I'd like to welcome you to one of the Wonders of the World: the Ancient Spanish Monastery.
An Ancient Spanish Monastery right in the heart of Florida's capital? No, it's not a joke! The story I'm about to tell you will literally leave you speechless.
This monastery, dedicated to St. Bernard de Clairvaux, was built in the mid-1100s, near Segovia, north of Madrid. So, when I say Spanish, I mean that this monastery was actually built on the Iberian Peninsula.
In 1925, the newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst purchased the cloisters, the chapterhouse and the refectory for the sum of $500,000. He had them dismantled them stone by stone, packed into 11,000 wooden crates and shipped to New York. Unfortunately, the shipment met with a series of misfortunes, and was placed in quarantine because it was believed to be carrying germs that could have caused a foot-and-mouth epidemic. In addition, Hearst ran into financial difficulty, and was forced to abandon the project.
The crates spent the next 26 years in a warehouse in Brooklyn, until 1952, when they were purchased by two businessmen, Raymond Moss and William Edgemon, who had the monastery rebuilt in Miami, where it was to serve as a tourist attraction…

The structures were dismantled stone by stone, bound with protective hay, packed in more than 11,000 wooden crates, numbered for identification and shipped to the United States. Soon after the shipment arrived, Hearst's financial problems forced most of his collection to be sold at auction. The massive crates remained in a warehouse in Brooklyn, New York, for 26 years. One year after Hearst’s' death in 1952, they were purchased by two entrepreneurs for use as a tourist attraction. It took 19 months and the equivalent of nearly $20 million dollars (in today’s currency) to put the Monastery back together. In 1953 Time magazine called it “the biggest jigsaw puzzle in history.”

Services are held on Sundays and weekdays in both English and Spanish.

Who knew! There is an ancient Spanish monastery in Miami.
How did it get there? Long story short, the monastery and cloisters were in Sacramenia, Spain in 1133 and were occupied by Cistercian monks for 700 years. After a revolution in Spain in 1830s, the cloisters were converted into a granary and stable. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst bought the remains of the monastery and had the structures dismantled stone by stone and had them shipped in over 11,000 crates. They were shipped to the US and due to Hearst's financial crisis the crates of stone were stored for over 26 years in New York City. A year after Hearst died in 1952, the crates of stone were purchased by two Ohio businessmen and the site in Miami was purchased to reconstruct the monastery and cloisters. It took over 19 months and over 1.5 million dollars to put it all back together. Time Magazine said it was the world's largest jigsaw puzzle.
