THAILAND: BANGKOK: UNEMPLOYMENT VICTIM BECOMES FISHBALL VENDOR
English/Nat
Thailand's economic crisis has started a wave of layoffs that has thousands of people looking for work.
While many will try and stay in the same industry, others are trying their hands at new and often simpler vocations.
APTV has the story of one such survivor who went from a high-flying lifestyle to one that is a bit fishy.
At Bangkok's Assumption University, it is common to find educated, well-travelled people among the faculty and student body.
But it is unusual to find such a person selling fishballs there.
Supop Pavanan is one of the casualties of Thailand's economic
fall.
He used to earn up to 260-thousand baht (3-thousand U-S dollars) per month travelling around the world as a guide.
Now he makes 10-thousand baht (200 U-S dollars) a month cooking, bagging and cleaning fishballs at his small vending cart.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I was an outbound tour leader before I'm doing this job. (It was) about to take the Thai people to travel abroad to every country in the world. (for) example, in New Zealand, Europe and Scandinavia. So I go everywhere in the world before. After I am laid off by my company I am looking for a new business. If I do in the food (business), it's easy because everyone must eat every day.
SUPER CAPTION: Supop Pavanan, Fishball Vendor
Supop's speciality was taking Thais to New Zealand.
He has many friends there that he is not sure he will ever see again.
Now, he works with his girlfriend, and they have had to give up many other luxuries besides travel.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
But if something is not necessary for my life, for the nightclub, for the discotheque, for the Black Label (whiskey) or something, I cut it out. I can stay in my current (situation). Something is necessary for me, okay I pay for it. Something is not, I forgot it. Don't think about it.
SUPER CAPTION: Supop Pavanan, Fishball Vendor
While Supop's business continues to grow, his old employer is seeing its hardest times.
Sawasdee Holidays has been sending Thais abroad for six years and has built a solid reputation.
But with the Thai baht losing half of its purchasing power and people with money being encouraged to stay home, Sawasdee has lost 95 per cent of its business.
Reminders of better days and celebrity clients like the King's sister still adorn the walls.
But no customers are to be seen, and the few remaining employees are left to shuffle papers.
Before he laid off half of his staff, the general manager sat down with his people and explained that he could only manage current costs for eight months.
With reductions, he estimated he could last for three years - and with that, 13 of his workers were let go.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
But after they go, we are not just finished. We still keep our eye on them. We recommend them to some company that tells (us) that they need some staff. Some of them, I had to use my credit to tell the new boss, the new company, to accept them, that they are good, they are very good staff.
SUPER CAPTION: Sorasak Chanwattanakul, General Manager, Sawasdee Holidays
In addition, employees were given up to six months' severance pay to keep them on their feet.
While many will have a chance to try another business, they hope that someday they can return to Sawasdee.
For now, the company has become a bank of silent phones and
empty chairs, and former employees like Supop are taking various uncertain roads towards the future.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
They think not many companies want to employ some more people.
Because I always heard on the news they lay off very day, so that it's really hard to find a job. Someone go to sell the noodle, someone stay at home. They don't know their future.

Sepak takraw (Indonesia: Sepak Takraw/Takrau, Bola Takraw/takrau; Myanmar: ပိုက်ကျော်ခြင်း;Malay: sepak raga; Thai: ตะกร้อ, rtgs: takro, pronounced [tā.krɔ̂ː]; Khmer: សីដក់ Sei Dak; Lao: ກະຕໍ້ ka-taw; Filipino: sipà, sipà tákraw, sepák tákraw [sɛ̝päk täkɾɐw]; Vietnamese: cầu mây (calameae ball or rattan ball)),[1] or kick volleyball, is a sport native to Southeast Asia.[2] Sepak takraw differs from the similar sport of Footvolley in its use of a rattan ball and only allowing players to use their feet, knee, chest and head to touch the ball. It is a popular sport in Malaysia, Indonesia & Thailand.
In Malaysia, the game is called sepak raga or takraw. In Laos, it is kataw (Lao: twine and kick)[1]. In Thailand, it is called takraw. In Myanmar it is known as chin lone, and is considered more of an art as there is often no opposing team, and the point is to keep the ball aloft gracefully and interestingly. In the Philippines, besides takraw it is also known as sipa, meaning kick.
Similar games include footbag net, footvolley, football tennis, bossaball, jianzi and sipa.

Etymology[edit]
Sepak is the Malay word for kick and takraw is the Thai word for a woven ball; therefore sepak takraw quite literally means to kick ball. The choosing of this name for the sport was essentially a compromise between Malaysia and Thailand, the two powerhouse countries of the sport.[3]
History[edit]
The earliest historical evidence shows the game was played in the 15th century's Malacca Sultanate, for it is mentioned in the Malay historical text, Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals).[4] The Malay Annals described in details the incident of Raja Muhammad, a son of Sultan Mansur Shah who was accidentally hit with a rattan ball by Tun Besar, a son of Tun Perak, in a Sepak raga game. The ball hit Raja Muhammad's headgear and knocked it down to the ground. In anger, Raja Muhammad immediately stabbed and killed Tun Besar, whereupon some of Tun Besar's kinsmen retaliated and wanted to kill Raja Muhammad. However, Tun Perak managed to restrain them from such an act of treason by saying that he would no longer accept Raja Muhammad as the Sultan's heir. As a result of this incident, Sultan Mansur Shah ordered his son out of Malacca and had him installed as the ruler of Pahang.[5]

Speaking of homemade beef balls, we mostly enjoy the Dai-style ones. These beef balls are very hard to make and require some high-quality beef!
To make beef balls, you will need rump steak or sirloin. The beef should be fresh, not frozen nor overnight. Pound the beef with 1.5 kg iron bars continuously with enough strength and short pauses. The beef should be finely pulverized in 30 minutes. Otherwise, moisture loss will make the beef much drier and unable to form into paste. Add in salt and starch. Gradually add in ice water and mix well with hands for at least 10 minutes, until the mixture is completely elastic. Put beef balls into 70℃ hot water to shape them and boil until cooked!
By doing so, the beef balls are much chewy and crunchy, making them both tasty and refreshing. I do hope that the next time when you order beef balls, don't try to bargain with the seller!
