“A New ‘New Deal’ for NYC & the USA” will be held on Friday, October 27, at the New School for Social Research, featuring a welcome by Professor Franklin D. The program will highlight Public Advocate James’s “New York Jobs for All Program,” a local version of H.R. 1000, the Jobs for All Act that Representative John Conyers (D-MI) has sponsored in successive sessions of Congress since 2013. According to Gertrude Schaffner Goldberg, Chair of NJFAC’s Executive Committee, “By initiating legislation for a New York Jobs for All Program, Public Advocate Letitia James has taken a giant step toward economic and social justice. This program will also move New York toward realizing the right to a useful and remunerative job that President Franklin D. American Jews, or Jewish Americans, are Americans who are Jews, whether by religion, ethnicity or nationality. The current Jewish community in the United States consists primarily of Ashkenazi Jews, who descend from diaspora Jewish populations of Central and Eastern Europe and comprise about 90% of the American Jewish population. Most American Ashkenazim are US-born, with a dwindling number of now elderly earlier immigrants, as well as some more recent foreign-born immigrants.
During the colonial era, prior to the mass immigration of Ashkenazim, Spanish and Portuguese Jews represented the bulk of America's then small Jewish population, and while their descendants are a minority today, they along with an array of other Jewish communities represented the remainder of American Jews, including other more recent Sephardic Jews, Mizrahi Jews, various other ethnically Jewish communities, as well as a smaller number of converts to Judaism. Depending on religious definitions and varying population data, the United States has the largest or second largest Jewish community in the world, after Israel. Randolph-Macon College hosted a Decade of the Sixties Football Reunion. Tom Harleman '71 was instrumental in planning the reunion, which took place Saturday, November 14, 2015 as the R-MC football team took on Hampden-Sydney during The Game.
R-MC President Robert R. Lindgren and Athletic Director Jeff Burns '87 welcomed guests, who gathered in the Birdsong Lindgren Pavilion for a reception before and during The Game.
A special program followed, which recognized football alumni and paid homage to former coaches and players. Pedro Arruza, head football coach, shared a few words with the enthusiastic attendees, and Professor Chuck Berry '67, South Dakota State University, was the invited speaker. The invocation was given by Reverend John Peters '70, who also served as emcee.
The R-MC Yellow Jackets defeated Hampden-Sydney 14-9.
