Speaker 1: The Bombay Store is a speciality store that exclusively retails only Indian made products. It is a popular store to pick up some very good quality souvenirs, plus, it is also a historical landmark. Freedom Fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak founded the store in nineteen hundred and six. Now, this was when the Swadeshi movement was at its height. This was when all freedom fighting patriots disowned everything that was not made in India. In fact, until recently this store was known as the Bombay Swadeshi Stores. While the store has multiple branches in various cities in India. I am at a signature store, here, in South Bombay.
There is a wide range of Indian handicrafts in sandalwood, metal, wood, stone, marble, etcetera. The Bombay Store has handicrafts and exquisite temple carvings for your home decor. These handicrafts are source from across the lenght and breadth of India and Bombay Store focuses mainly on artisans from rural India. Speaker 2. Chetan Pathare: I like the quality of what they carry. I like the variety of what they carry, there prices are reasonable. There are more choices when you come here. Speaker 1: These writing accessories made of handmade paper are also a good buy. The store is also popular for its carpets, rugs and wall hangings in silk, cotton or jute. The soft furnishings available in the Bombay Store are made up of naturally occurring fibers, either pure silk or pure cotton.
The Bombay Store also has a wide range of apparel for men and for women. Women especially love these stoles, scarves and shawls available here. Other popular gift options are fashion jewelry, leather products and handbags. The Bombay Store has a wide range of exotic herbal teas from Darjeeling, Nilgiris and from Sikkim. The perfumed candles, aroma therapy oils, incense sticks and herbal cosmetics also sell very well. Speaker 3. Benjan J. Now, we have people like Ustad zakhir Hussain, Juhi Chawala, Vidya Balan. Around thirtty percent of our clients here are still foreigners, the rest are NRIs returning expatriates. Turquoise focuses exclusively on home decor products which are hand made by artisans all over India and also from different parts of the world. Turquoise was designed and centralized in Israel as an artist piece. You can pick up a whole range of home decor products which are made from wood, stone, glass and, natural fibers, again, all hand made and very creative.
We work in furniture, lighting, mall handicraft. We do small knick-knacks of different products. All products are popular on their own right. They work beautifully depending on what you are looking for. This is a space where any artist can come and showcase their product. Currently we have about sixty odd artists who are edxhibiting with us. We do not interfere with the artists' techniques, but, we do work with them on innovating the concept and creating new applications of the product. The type of clientell is the kind of person who likes a happy, harmonious, bright environment at home. One of the famous shops in Mumbai for fine arts and artefacts is Phillips Antiques. Which has been in business since 1860. That is close to 150 years. This shop is located opposite Regal Cinima in Colaba, South Mumbai. This is where you can expect to find a variety of oil paintings, carvings, masks, silverware and other things.
I am Farukisa, I am the owner of the shop. The shop was founded 1860 by Mr. Phillips. We purchased this shop, my great-grandfather, in 1920. It is a very old established shop in Mumbai selling works of art and photographs, maps, folk and tribal art. This table has a display of unusual and unique tribal masks from Maharashtra. They are 40 years old and cost around 35000 rupees.
Over here we have a nice collection of Indian folk paintings. These are called Mifil paintings, they come from Bihar, using natural colors, from extracts of flowers and fruits. These wooden carvings, which are 50 to 60 years old, are the yalis from Kerala. These are the original 1920 oleographs from the Raja Ravivarman Press. These are exclusive photographs of old Bombay, taken in the pre-independence era between 1855 and 1914. They cost anywhere from 3000 to 5000.
If you are looking at old prints and maps you need to keep them in a dry environment. Humidity is bad for pictures generally. As for other objects, I think any, there is no special care for them. Except just do not drop them. I am Mustufa, showing you Mumbai.

✓ On my last visit to India I got to visit the famous Bombay Market in Surat, (Gujarat, India) it's my wife's not so secret shopping place; she in fact says that no trip to Surat would be complete without a visit to this very busy and popular market.
This is very much a ladies and men's clothes market but there are clothing options for children as well.
We truly love a place such as this, full of characters trying to get you to spend your hard earned notes in their shop.
The market has a buzzing atmosphere and visitors can expect to haggle down any price that you're given by the traders (it's common practice by the seller to quote a higher initial price; in the expectation that the buyer will offer a lesser price to finalise the purchase), do not be daunted by the bargaining process it can add an additional dimension of fun to the whole buying process.

Several shots of shop windows with swathes of cloth displayed inside, Indian vases and elaborate ornaments, a necklace is taken out of a display cabinet and handed to three Indian women wearing saris who hold it up to admire its intricate, typically Indian design. One woman places it around the neck of another. The salesman holds up a mirror so that she can see what the necklace looks like on her. In another shop/market area a couple of Western women are being shown lengths of white lace cloth by Indian salesmen dressed in white. Two other women have lengths of brightly coloured and sequinned sari cloth draped around their shoulders by salesmen. Outdoors shot of bustling street, then images filmed from a moving vehicle showing a hardware shop with lots of metal pots and pans hanging outside in a busy display, followed by a display of ceramic pots or vases - possibly for water-carrying?
A market street shows lots of traders and/or beggars squatting down on the ground, Western men dressed in white trousers and shirts walk past them. A man bargains with a trader, who holds up a simple set of balancing scales for weighing goods.
A group of people walk down steps towards a market area. Men at an outdoor food stall prepare food, watched by a little boy, a young Indian man sitting at a stall piled high with green coconuts chops at a coconut with a blunt-ended knife, making a small 'lid' which he flicks open with the knife blade, then hands to another Indian, who holds it up to his mouth and drinks the fresh coconut milk.
Two Indian women wearing saris and long shiny plaits walk past market stalls. Two men walk past carrying a long wooden pole at either end, hanging from it are large sprays of tiny flowers. Shots of busy streets, one with a man with a horse drawn cart. Men sitting cross-legged on the pavement at the flower market thread flowers onto string, making garlands. A close-up of the beautiful Indian woman from the car shows her modelling a white flower garland in her hair. She smiles charmingly at her audience, showing perfect white teeth. Shot of Indian girls at a Hindu wedding, camera pans across to the bride and groom, decked in garlands of flowers, the groom wears white and the bride red. Men in white 'Nehru' outfits with little white caps bow and greet each other with the traditional 'namaste' - hands pressed together as though in prayer accompanied by a little bow. Other guests greet the bride and groom in the same way.
Shot of the steps leading up to a white Hindu temple, a couple of men walk up the steps, a closer shot shows an Indian man with orange material swathed loosely across his chest as he walks down the steps towards the camera, the tall conical shape of the temple in the background, against a deep blue sky.
The narrator tells of how many faiths coexist in Bombay, though the city is mainly Hindu, accompanied by a shot of an intricately carved Hindu temple, one of the 400 in Bombay at that time, according to the narrator. Further shots of Hindu temples, followed by some examples of the 100 or so mosques, and a Christian church with a close-up of a statue of Jesus, arms outstretched. There follows a shot of a Parsee (Parsi?) temple, apparently peculiar to Bombay, a close-up shows a woman in a red sari bending over a shrine in the entrance.
Shots continue of worship of the main faiths - Muslims in a mosque bend over as they pray to Mecca, an Indian Christian makes the sign of the cross over his chest and a Parsee man prays next to a wrought iron decorative scroll of script on a wall.

When visitors shop in India they typically buy antiques, rugs, clothes, etcetera, but to try something different and unique, come to the Bombay Paperie. The Bombay Paperie, located at the Bombay Samachar Marg in Fort, Mumbai, sells paper products only. What is unique about this place is that the paper products sold here are all genuinely hand-made by expert craftsman.
The main idea for opening a Paperie was to keep the dieing art of making hand-made paper company made by hand alive. Cotton is the main raw material that we use which is taken from big garment factories. So the resulting product is more environmental friendly, which should not require the cutting of trees. The store showcases the craft of making handmade paper as well demonstrates the value of environment preservation. Hand made paper has been an art for centuries now. It is believed to have orginated in Kashmir some time in the 15th century and Bombay Paperie has now revived this dieing art.
Here you can see all the cotton is kept in a huge heap. Here the person is sorting it out. The people who make the paper are called calzeez. There is a whole range of products to choose from. Paper sheets are available in various colors. You can use these to make your own notebooks, note pads or scrap books. Even the printing is by hand. And what is more, the blocks used for the print are also handmade. Very popular in this store are these gift cards and thank you cards. Ideal for sending your postal messages. And no gift is complete without a hand made gift bag or box to give that special personal touch.
There are also these quaint paper lamp shades to light up your room. They are available in various designs. Cards, lamps, even the blinds are some things that people like the most. Souvenirs from this place would be these paper figures, paper dolls or some paper flowers. And these are some beautiful made-to-order paper blinds and paper wall hangings.
