One of a trilogy of films depicting Channel Islanders' experiences of occupation by the German forces is the true story behind The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
In 1941 Hitler deported over 2000 British men, women and children from the Channel Islands to the heart of Nazi Germany. It was a terrifying journey into the unknown and some killed themselves rather than go. Others had just hours to pack one bag, destroy their pets and leave. However, the initial horror of the camps and the struggle to survive in the primitive conditions was replaced with a determination not just to survive, but to thrive, as Hitler's crime created one of the most bizarre episodes of the war.

The bunker is joined with another one by a long tunnel. The mortar and machine guns are still there. The racks have de-fused mortar bombs in them and the bottles of wine which the germans left is still there. There is a lot of equipment in the bunker. The Channel Islands Occupation Society have really done well with this bunker complex.

LIBERATION DAY AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL CHANNEL ISLANDS
The Channel Islands UK are this year marking their 70th Liberation Day in May and making it even more special with a 5 week long Heritage Festive running up to the actual date.
Marking the day on May 9th in 1945 when the islands were returned to Britain after Hitler’s troops had invaded them for a 5-year period during World War II.
The group of islands that lay just off the Northern French coast have all come together to make this 70th anniversary even more iconic.
The non-stop programme will include exclusive tours, special openings of historic sites, themed and guided walks, bus and coach tours plus special exhibitions and then ending with huge parades on Liberation Day itself.
The many relics left by the German troops are scattered over every island. All the islands in the group, in fact eight are inhabited they all have bunkers, towers and gun emplacements which are now very much on the tourist trail and are actively searched out by all tourists including the Germans themselves.
