Places to see in ( Annecy - France ) The Chateau de Montrottier
The castle of Montrottier is a former stronghold of the xiii th century, rebuilt several times and restored in the xix th century, which stands on the town of Lovagny in the department of Haute-Savoie region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes , in a dozen kilometers west of Annecy, near the Gorges du Fier .
As historical monuments ; the donjon, the main building of the Knights and the tower of the Nun are the subject of a classification by decree of the1 st September 1919 ; the grounds surrounding the castle are classified by order of the January 5 , 1935 ; the farm and the buildings composing the castle except the classified parts are the subject of a partial inscription by decree of the November 3 , 1987.
The castle of Montrottier is located in the French department of Haute-Savoie in the municipality of Lovagny , in the Savoyard foreland . It stands 1 kilometer southeast of the village on a hill of 445 meters above sea level that dominates the whole country. From the walkway , the view embraces the hilly countryside and extends beyond the mountains overlooking Lake Annecy to Mont Blanc. Raised on a rocky peak, encircled by the old bed of the Fier ; La Grande-Fosse, he watched the passage of the river Le Fier on the road connecting Chambery to Geneva .
The Montrottier Castle is in the form of a pentagonal enclosure built in xiii th century, the shape of the terrain, protected to the north by the Fier gorges around a dungeon isolated cylindrical in a courtyard, square tower , the Tower of the Sisters, houses large and small and a building for the body of the guards. This ensemble is a fine example of medieval Savoyard architecture; the house and tower dating from the xv th century and réemploient elements of xiii th and xiv th centuries.
It is to Pierre de Menthon that we owe the construction of the Logis des Chevaliers, the Logis des Comtes, and the cylindrical dungeon surmounted by machicolation . The latter is built after 1425, blocking rolled pebbles, bricks and gravel, and its apparatus consists of tufa rubble. At a height of 35.6 meters , it has a thick wall of more than 3 meters at its base which is built in large apparatus and talute in the shape of a truncated cone. With five floors, it is accessible by a wooden footbridge from the first floor of the Logis des Comtes located 4 meters above the ground. A staircase of 87 stepsleads to its summit, from where one has a remarkable view. As for the machicolation, which composes the coronation, they rest on a row of triple crows and the three merlons which dominate the road to the south-east are pierced by circular guns.

Château de Montrottier, France
Château de Montrottier, France
The medieval castle of Montrottier and its remarkable collections are located in the Savoy foreland, between the river Rhone and the limestone foothills of the Alps.
Its location is work-related erosion Proud, descended the Mont Charvin, carving deep gorges natural.
This is above the Gorges du Fier, at Lovagny, this castle was built between the 13th and 15th century.
This is a pentagonal fortress whose plan is arranged around a cylindrical tower with battlements.
The oldest buildings date from the 13th century, the others belong to the 15th.
Despite the revisions, the castle of Montrottier still preserves significant elements of medieval military architecture.
Isolated on a rockey spur and protected (northward by the Great Pit, bed of the river Fier in the Quaternary, the Nunns Towe, dates back to the XIIIth century and has some architectural caracteristics of a maison forte, without being one, strictly speaking. Thus this tower is the oldest part of the castle, castle which took shape over the centuries.
Indeed, it's in the XIVth century that the turret (with corner) was built, turret which shelters a spiral staircase.
The knights dwelling, the earls'dwelling, the curtain wall and the keep date back to the XVth century.
From Jean de Montrottier in the XIII th century to the Académie Florimontane nowadays, the castle belonged to different owners, among those, the most famous were:
Pierre de Menthon, adviser and ambassador of Amedée VIII th, first duke of Savoy. His family owned the castle from the XV th century to the French revolution time
Général Guillaume Henry Dufour, citizen of Geneva, an engineer, engineer in topography and a Swiss political man (beginning of the XIX th century).
Baroness de Rochette who made important reconstructions and restaurations (middle of the XIX th century).
Victor Frèrejean, an industrial man from Lyon (end of the XIX th century).
Léon Marès, the prodigious collector of collections, who, in 1916, bequeathed the property to the Florimontane Academy (a scholarly company created in Annecy in 1606 by Saint Françcois de Sales and his friend the lawyer Antoine Faure, father of the famous grammarian Vaugelas)
The visit of the castle has been possible since 1919.
