What to see in Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia | MUST WATCH Exit festival, Youth and Cultural capital
In this video, we explore the city center of Novi Sad. Novi Sad is the capital of Vojvodina, Serbia, and the city of Exit Festival. It is also the European Youth Capital of 2019 and will be European Cultural Capital in 2021. Enjoy in beautiful Danube park, Catholic and Orthodox cathedrals, Town House, and more.
In order of appearance, you will see:
- Our first start is Dunavski (Danube's park). This park is the oldest and most beautiful park in Novi Sad. The first trees were planted in the 19th century.
- Dunavska Street is probably the oldest street in Novi Sad. On the left side of the street, houses are in neo-baroque style. In the video, at the end of the Dunavska streets, on the right side, there is the city library in the house that was built in 1895.
- Zmaj Jovina Street is one of the oldest streets in Novi Sad. It extends from Freedom Square to the bishop's palace. The street was once a place with a number of craft and trade shops, and it was called Magazinska alley. At the start of the street, in front of the bishop's house, since 1984, there is a monument of Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, the most famous children's poet, after which street bears its name. Lined with shops and sidewalk cafes, it is the very place for a coffee or light lunch.
- Trg Slobode (Freedom Square) is the largest central city square, built in the 18th century. On the west side of the square is the Town Hall built in 1895th in Neo-Renaissance style, designed by architect George Molnar. On the opposite side of the square, is a tall Catholic church “Name of Mary”. It was built in 1895th in Neo-Gothic style. Its Neo-Gothic architecture is quite striking, and if you happen to get lost you could always find your way back to Liberty Square by using the church as a landmark.
- Laze Teleckog is the upbeat street of Novi Sad urban life, full of cafés, restaurants, pizzerias, clubs, and shops. Houses mostly have one floor, they are colorful and built-in Austro-Hungarian style.
- Grčkoškolska street (The Greek School street) is one of the oldest in Novi Sad. The street was named after the Greek school, the house at no. 3, which was founded by the Greek Communities, residing in Novi Sad in 1739.
- Pašićeva street, named after famous Serbian and Yugoslav politician and diplomat Nikola Pašić who was the most important Serbian political figure for almost 40 years, from 1890 to 1926. In this street is The Cathedral Church of the Holy Great-Martyr George. This Orthodox Cathedral is the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Bačka. The present-day church was completed in 1905, on the ruins of a church built in 1734 and destroyed in 1849. It is located next to the Eparchy offices in the Bishop's Palace, in Nikola Pašić Street. It is commonly known as Saborna crkva ('Cathedral Church') among the city residents
- Finally, we reach Boulevard of Mihailo Pupin, famous scientist. There is the building of the government of Vojvodina. It is the executive organ of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, within the Republic of Serbia. The building where is the seat of the Government of Vojvodina is known as Banovina Palace. The building was erected on an area of 28,000 square meters, with a length of 185 meters and 5 floors. The complex consists of two buildings. One contains 147 rooms, and the other (horseshoe) 569 special departments. The building façade is made of Brac marble. Working couple Baranji made the sculptures, reliefs with figures of King Peter I, King Alexander, Radomir Putnik, Stepa Stepanovic, Zivojin Misic, and stylized logos with animal motifs on the administration building.
Novi Sad (in Serbian Cyrillic: Нови Сад, pronounced [nôʋiː sâːd]; in Hungarian: Újvidék [ˈuːjvideːk]; in Slovak: Nový Sad; in Rusyn: Нови Сад; in German: Neusatz) is an amazing city! The city looks great every month of the year.

Exploring Countryside Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia | MUST WATCH Enjoy
This video begins in the center of Novi Sad. I then journey from the center to the awesome countryside. You will see salaši (farms) with colorful fields, pappy, cats, cows, goats, chickens and more, from land and air (recorded with a drone).
The countryside nearby Novi Sad is very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. Real nature nearby urban city.
The word “salaš” is of Hungarian origin and it is a field with all the economic farm buildings, livestock, and tools for agronomy. The Salaš is a complex, consisting of the smaller fenced area and large farmland. Outside the court, there is a garden, where vegetables, fruits, and sometimes a vineyard is grown.

What to see in Novi Sad, Serbia
Novi Sad is the second largest city of Serbia and is just 74 km north of the capital Belgrade. The city lies on the banks of the Danube river and numerous international tourist cruisers stop in its harbour. Novi Sad is a home of the famous EXIT music festival, one of the best in Europe that brings together the best musicians from around the world.
What to see in Novi Sad:
- Visit Petrovaradin fortress on the right bank of the Danube, which was built in the time of the Austrian emperors Leopold I, Joseph I, Charles VI, Maria Teresa and Joseph II. Enter through the lavish arch of Leopold Gate, visit the city's museum housed inside the former Gunners' Barracks, and don't forget to have a gander at the quirky clock tower which has its hands the wrong way around (so the small hand shows minutes and the big hand shows hours) to aid far-off fishermen along the Danube.
It was built in 1895th in neogothic in style.
- A majestic Art Nouveau building a short walk from Freedom Square, Novi Sad’s Synagogue is one of the city’s most impressive buildings. The synagogue saw its fair share of tragedy in the 20th century.
- A short walk from Freedom Square lies the Bishop’s Palace, sitting at the end of the Zmaj Jovina street. It is a residential palace of the Serbian Orthodox Bishop of the Diocese of Backa. The building was built in 1901 in the Serbian-Byzantine style, designed by architect Vladimir Nikolic.
- Zmaj Jovina Street is one of the oldest streets in Novi Sad. It extends from Freedom Square to the bishop's palace. The street was once a place with a number of craft and trade shops, and it was called Magazinska alley. At the end of the street, in front of the bishop's house, since 1984, there is a monument of Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, the most famous children's poet, after which street bears its name.
- At the Theatre Square there is a large and modern building of the Serbian National Theatre.
- Behind the building of the theater's is Uspen church, built in 1774th in the Baroque style.
- The City Museum, Platoneum and Museum of Vojvodina are undoubtedly the jewels in this city. The city also has a number of excellent galleries, including the Matica Srpska gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina.
- Dunavska Street is probably the oldest street in Novi Sad. On the left side of the street are houses in neo-baroque style. At the beginning of the Dunavska streets, there is the city library in the house that was built in 1895.
- Dunavski Park is the oldest and most beautiful park in Novi Sad. The first trees were planted in the 19th century.

NOVI SAD - Serbia Travel Guide | Around The World
Novi Sad (Нови Сад) is the second largest city of Serbia, the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina and the administrative center of the South Bačka District. It is located in the southern part of the Pannonian Plain, on the border of the Bačka and Srem geographical regions, on the banks of the Danube river, facing the northern slopes of Fruška Gora mountain.
Novi Sad was founded in 1694, when Serb merchants formed a colony across the Danube from the Petrovaradin fortress, a Habsburg strategic military post. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it became an important trading and manufacturing centre, as well as a centre of Serbian culture of that period, earning the nickname of the Serbian Athens. The city was heavily devastated in the 1848 Revolution, but it was subsequently restored. Today, along with the capital city of Belgrade, Novi Sad is the industrial and financial center of the Serbian economy. Novi Sad was named to be one of three 2021 European Capital of Culture cities.
In the 19th century, the city was the capital of Serbian culture, earning the nickname Serbian Athens. In that time, almost every Serbian novelist, poet, jurist, and publicist at the end of 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century had lived or worked in Novi Sad some time of his or her career. Among others, these cultural workers include Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, Mika Antić, Đura Jakšić, etc. Matica srpska, the oldest cultural-scientific institution of Serbia, was moved from Budapest to Novi Sad in 1864, and contains second-largest library in the country (the Library of Matica srpska) with over 3.5 million volumes. The Serbian National Theatre, the oldest professional theatre among the South Slavs, was founded in Novi Sad in 1861.
Today, Novi Sad is the second cultural centre in Serbia (besides Belgrade) and city's officials try to make the city more attractive to numerous cultural events and music concerts. Since 2000, Novi Sad is home to the EXIT festival, one of the biggest music summer festival in Europe. Other important cultural events are Sterijino pozorje theatre festival, Zmaj Children Games, International Novi Sad Literature Festival, Novi Sad Jazz Festival, and many others. Besides Serbian National Theatre, the most prominent theatres are also Novi Sad Theatre, Youth Theatre, and Cultural centre of Novi Sad. Novi Sad Synagogue also houses many cultural events . Other city's cultural institutions include Detachment of the Serbian Academy of Science and Art, Library of Matica Srpska, Novi Sad City Library and Azbukum. City is also home to the Archive of Vojvodina, which collect many documents from Vojvodina dating from 1565.
Novi Sad has several folk song societies, which are known as kulturno-umetničko društvo or KUD. The most well known societies in the city are: KUD Svetozar Marković, AKUD Sonja Marinković, SKUD Željezničar, FA Vila and the oldest SZPD Neven, established in 1892. National minorities expose their own tradition, folklore and songs in Hungarian MKUD Petőfi Sándor, Slovak SKUD Pavel Jozef Šafárik, Ruthenian RKC Novi Sad, and other societies.
The city has several museums and galleries, public and privately owned. The most well known museum in the city is Museum of Vojvodina, founded in 1847, which houses a permanent collection of Serbian culture and a life in Vojvodina through history. Museum of Novi Sad in Petrovaradin Fortress has a permanent collection of history of fortress. Gallery of Matica Srpska is the biggest and most respected gallery in the city, which has two galleries in the city centre. There is also The Gallery of Fine Arts - Gift Collection of Rajko Mamuzić and The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection - one of the biggest collections of Serbian art from the 1900s until the 1970s.
The number of tourists visiting Novi Sad each year has steadily risen since 2000. Every year, in the beginning of July, during the annual EXIT music festival, the city is full of young people from all over Europe. In 2008, over 200,000 people visited the festival. Besides EXIT festival, Novi Sad Fair attracts many business people into the city; in May, the city is home to the biggest agricultural show in the region, which 600,000 people visited in 2005. There is also a tourist port near Varadin Bridge in the city centre welcoming various river cruise vessels from across Europe who cruise on Danube river. The most recognized structure in Novi Sad is Petrovaradin Fortress, which dominates the city and with scenic views of the city. Besides the fortress, there is also historic neighborhood of Stari Grad, with many monuments, museums, caffes, restaurants and shops. There is also a National Park of Fruška Gora nearby, approx. 20 km (12 mi) from city centre.
AWESOME vintage dumbwaiter in Novi Sad, Serbia
I really wonder why did they built this instead of proper elevator. Anyway this looks REALLY old and I don't know how old it is, but it is really nice to see a vintage lift that you move manually by rope! It seems that nobody used it for years or even decades

Exploring Sremski Karlovci town of wine, spirituality and culture |near Novi Sad and Belgrade Serbia
This video is about Sremski Karlovci, the town you can see when you are in Novi Sad or Belgrade or anywhere else near Vojvodina and Serbia. Sremski Karlovci is situated on the bank of the river Danube, 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Novi Sad. We start from Novi Sad, pass through Petrovaradin and explore the center of Sremski Karlovci, the Royal garden, the monastery and more.
In ancient times, a small Roman fortress existed at this location. The town itself was first mentioned in 1308, under the name of Karom. Its Serbian name, Karlovci was first recorded in 1532/3. The town has traditionally been known as the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Monarchy, as well as the political and cultural capital of Serbian Vojvodina after the May Assembly and during the Revolution in 1848.
We start from Novi Sad, pass Petrovaradin old and new town and Petrovaradin fortress. In Sremski Karlovci we start from Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary monastery. The church of the Presentation, commonly called Upper Church due to its position on top of a smaller hill in town, was completed in 1764.
The second stop is the awesome Royal garden. The complex of the Royal Garden is situated in the town, 500 m away from the town center. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in our country. It consists of two levels: sports and recreational facilities are situated on the upper level and walking lanes in the lower one.
Then, we go to the center and the first building is Karlovci Theological Seminary. Orthodox Theological Seminary in Karlovci was founded in 1794, the second one in the world (Kievan Seminary being the first).
Patriarch's Court is one of the most monumental XIX-century buildings of Vojvodina. It was completed in 1895 and it served as the residence of the Patriarch of Karlovci, and later as the summer residence of the Patriarch of Serbia after the reunification of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1920. The Court today houses the Museum of Serbian Orthodox Church, and it is also the current residence of the Orthodox bishop of the Eparchy of Srem.
Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas dedicated to the Translation of Relics of Saint Nicholas (22 May), was erected in 1762. It is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Serbian baroque.
Located right next to the Orthodox Cathedral Church, the Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1768. Its portal is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of baroque portals in Serbia.
Karlovci High School is the oldest Serbian high school was founded in Karlovci in 1791. The building houses an impressive library with many books of great importance to the history of Serbs in Austria-Hungary.
The Magistrate of Sremski Karlovci (town hall) is one of the most historical buildings in town. It was completed in 1811 in the neo-classicist style, and for most of its history, it served as the seat of the Town and Municipal Assembly.
What you can buy? My suggestion is Bermet wine as here is the only place on the Earth where Bermet wine is produced. It is a traditional desert aromatic wine that has been produced in this region for centuries. At first, it was used as a remedy. However, with the passing of time, due to its exceptional taste, it was made for pleasure as well. Vienna Court was buying Bermet from the local winemakers in advance and at high prices. From the middle of the 19th century, it was being exported regularly, even to America. Bermet is a sweet red wine with a high percentage of alcohol (16% - 17%). However, it is the superb taste that distinguishes this wine from the others. The taste is derived from medicinal herbs, spices and dry fruit that are added to it during the process of production. The Ministry of Agriculture declared Bermet from Fruška Gora as a new protected brand of Serbia in 2007.

Exploring military FORTRESS Novi Sad, Vojvodina, Serbia | Exit festival fortress
In this video I head out on an adventure to explore Austro-Hungarian historic military fortress, nicknamed Gibraltar of the Danube!
Situated in Novi Sad, Serbia, the fortress is now known as Petrovaradin Fortress. s located on the right bank of the Danube river.
According to one legend, the name is derived from Petrovaradin more words - Petra means rock in Latin, var is in the Hungarian town, and din of the Turkish faith, from which is derived Petrovaradin, the town on the rock firm as faith.
The cornerstone of the present-day southern part of the fortress was laid on 18 October 1692 by Charles Eugène de Croÿ. Construction of the fortress lasted for 88 years, until. 1780.
Petrovaradin Fortress has many underground tunnels as well as 16 km of corridors and resting places as well as a backup supply well in case of a long siege of the fortress. Visiting of the underground galleries is recommended in a company of professional guides of the Museum of Novi Sad.
The minute and hour hand on the clock tower are reversed, with the small hand showing minutes, and the big hand showing hours. It was created as such so that fishermen on the Danube river can see the time from a long distance. The Reversed clock as it is known, is one of the landmarks of Petrovaradin fortress.
Today, Fortress is tourist attraction and the place where Exit festival takes place.
EXIT festival is an annual summer music festival that has been held at the fortress since its inception in 2001. Since then, it has grown from the biggest festival in South-Eastern Europe, to one of the biggest in Europe. Sex Pistols, Nightwish, Garbage, Goldfrapp, Fatboy Slim, Franz Ferdinand, Morrissey, Billy Idol, Pet Shop Boys, The Cardigans, HIM, Robert Plant, Guns N' Roses, The Prodigy, Beastie Boys, Lauryn Hill, Basement Jaxx, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan are just a few names that have performed at EXIT festival.

Creative History Balkans Tour / Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad
Creative History Balkans Tour (CHBT) is a project that aims to develop and promote the tour based on four historical fortresses in four Balkans’ countries: Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia; Citadela Fortress Old City of Budva, Montenegro; Kastel Fortress in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Skadar Fortress in Rozefa, Albania.
The significance of all these proposed locations and fortifications is that they each symbolise periods, type of architecture and design, and occasions for their built or creation. Balkan has been known as a turbulent region and for this reason cultural heritage, which is very rich, is important as it helps learning about each other and building bridges between people and communities, as well as between past and future.
The project CHBT is realised by Foundation Exit, it is provided by the RCC Tourism Development and Promotion Project’s Grant Programme and it is funded by European Union. This project will encourage and support increased youth mobility through the region, fostering close social interaction with host populations, which will contribute towards “tourism for peace” value.

The rock of Petrovaradin and its vicinity – the space occupied by Petrovaradin Fortress – had perfect conditions to be home to the earliest human settlements. The archaeological research conducted in 21stcentury showed that the plateau featured a series of twelve settlement, most of them having been fortified. Archaeologists are convinced that there are more prehistoric and more recent settlements still not discovered.
From the old mediaeval fortress, via the Austrian military fortification done in two phases to the home of cultural and educational institutions nowadays (the City Museum of Novi Sad, the Academy of Arts, the planetarium, the observatory, Atelier 61, numerous ateliers of masters in fine- and applied arts.), The Petrovaradin Fortress had a turbulent history, but it was always an important place of interest.
In XXI century, Petrovaradin Fortress became the centre of the largest open-air music (EXIT festival) and theatre festivals and it has been receiving a long-overdue detailed makeover in the years leading to its being elected the European Capital of Culture.
There are many legends about this place. Rumour has it that in the tunnels under Petrovaradin Fortress, which allegedly connects it with Novi Sad under the Danube River, there is a place with a thousand cats, hidden libraries and cursed treasure. But there is a sleeping monster there as well, as a young couple saw for themselves.
Biblioteka Matice srpske / The Matica Srpska Library
The Matica Srpska Library is the oldest Serbian national library and the first public and scientific library of Serbs. It was founded in 1826, in Pest, together with the foundation of the Matica Srpska Literary Society. In 1864, the Library and the Society were moved to Novi Sad. Today, Matica Srpska Library is a modern library with rich collections.
