The City Of Ten Thousand Buddhas (traditional Chinese: 萬佛聖城; ; pinyin: Wànfó Shèngchéng; Vietnamese: Chùa Vạn Phật Thánh Thành) is an international Buddhist community and monastery founded by Hsuan Hua, an important figure in Western Buddhism. It is one of the first Chan Buddhist temples in the United States, and one of the largest Buddhist communities in the Western Hemisphere.

The city is situated in Talmage, Mendocino County, California, about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Ukiah, and 110 miles (180 km) north of San Francisco. It was one of the first Buddhist monasteries built in the United States. The temple follows the Guiyang school of Chan, one of the Five Houses of Chan. The city is noted for its close adherence to the vinaya, the austere traditional Buddhist monastic code.
The city comprises 488 acres (2 km2) of land, of which 80 acres (0.3 km2) are developed. The rest of the land includes meadows, orchards, and forests. Large institutional buildings and smaller residential houses are scattered over the west side of the campus. The main Buddha hall, monastic facilities, educational institutes, administrative offices, the main kitchen and dining hall, Jyun Kang Vegetarian Restaurant, and supporting structures are all located in this complex.

萬佛聖城簡介：購於一九七四年，為法界佛教總會樞紐所在地。位於三藩市北邊，約一百一十英哩之曼第仙諾縣達摩鎮內，佔地約七百英畝，城中已開闢使用地，約八十英畝。萬佛聖城內有萬佛寶殿，內供千手千眼觀音菩薩立像，大殿四壁供奉萬尊佛像。平時四眾共聚於此做早晚課誦，晚課後聆聽上人開演大乘經典之法音。每逢佛七、觀音七等法會，更是十方善信共聚同修之時。尤其每年固定舉行的萬佛寶懺，精進之氣氛，更是彌漫於整個萬佛寶殿。城內又設有各個不同之建築與學校，計有小學、中學、大學、僧伽居士訓練班、如來寺、大悲院、喜捨院、妙語堂、戒壇、圖書館、福居樓、君康素食館等，共有七十餘座大型建築物。城內環境清幽寧靜，空氣清新，提供理想之讀書、修行環境。

Brief Biography:
Luang Por Sumedho was born in Seattle, Washington in 1934. After serving four years in the US Navy as a medic, he completed a BA in Far Eastern Studies and a MA in South Asian Studies. In 1966, he went to Thailand to practice meditation at Wat Mahathat in Bangkok. Not long afterwards, he went forth as a novice monk in a remote part of the country, Nong Khai, before receiving full ordination in 1967.
A year of solitary practice followed. Although fruitful, it showed him the need for a teacher who could more actively guide him. A fortuitous encounter with a visiting monk led him to Ubon province to practice with Luang Por Chah. He took dependence from Luang Por Chah and remained under his close guidance for ten years.
In 1975, Luang Por Sumedho, established Wat Pah Nanachat, International Forest Monastery where Westerners could be trained in English. In 1977, he accompanied Luang Por Chah to England and took up residence at the Hampstead Vihara, with three other monks.
Luang Por Sumedho was made an Upachaya (ordination preceptor) in 1981. Since then he has given upasampada (Bhikkhu precepts) to more than a hundred aspirants of many nationalities. Luang Por Sumedho was integral in establishing the Forest Sangha tradition in the United Kingdom. He was central in establishing Amaravati Buddhist Monastery and Chithurst Buddhist Monastery. He remained as senior incumbent at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in Hertfordshire until November 2010, at which time he handed over the duties of abbot to Ajahn Amaro. Luang Por Sumedho is now based in Thailand where his monastic life began in 1966.

Family Trip to Northern California 8 15 2015
Description; Family trip to Northern California from Long Beach, CA. From Long Beach our first stop was the Cambodian Buddhist Temple in Stockton, then continue on to the Ten Thousand Buddhas City in Ukiah, CA. Day two we left the 10,000 Buddhas City and head out to the Glass Beach (sadly the Glass Beach have no more glass) from the Glass Beach to our final stop of the day Drive through Tree. This place is very beautiful, a lot of big and tall trees. I was hopping to drive through the tree, but my minivan was too wide. Day three return to the Golden Gate Bridge, then back to Long Beach, CA.

The Great Compassion Mantra is an extremely powerful spell because it contains not only the sacred name of Avalokiteshvara, but also the various embodiments, wisdom, capacities and merits of this Bodhisattva and other enlightened beings. When this mantra is recited, you are connected to Buddhahood through your voice. You do not have to understand the content of this mantra; reciting the Sanskrit version alone will create remarkable merit.

Master Hsuan Hua brought the true and proper teachings of the Buddha to the West and establishing a proper monastic community of the fully ordained Sangha here. Because of the increasing numbers of people who wished to become monks and nuns under Hsuan Hua's guidance, in 1972 he decided to hold ordination ceremonies at Gold Mountain Dhyana Monastery. Two monks and one nun received ordination. Subsequent ordination platforms have been held at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in 1976, 1979, 1982, 1989, 1991, and 1992, and progressively larger numbers of people have received full ordination. Over two hundred people from countries all over the world were ordained under him.

依據《大悲心陀羅尼經》記載，釋迦牟尼佛正要廣說陀羅尼法門時，突然十方大地震動，三千大千世界皆作金色，是因為觀世音菩薩密放神通之故。但因為大眾皆疑惑，總持王菩薩見到這種稀有的情況，便起立合掌問釋迦牟尼佛：『如此神通的相貌，是誰所放？』而釋迦牟尼佛回答說：『現場的大會裡，有一名菩薩，名曰觀世音自在，從無量劫以來，成就了大慈大悲，擅能修習無量陀羅尼門，為了使眾生安樂，所以釋放神通威力。』 釋迦牟尼佛話說完，觀世音菩薩從座而起，向釋迦牟尼佛合掌說：『我有大悲心陀羅尼咒，現在想要說，為了使所有的眾生得到安樂、除一切病苦、得壽命、得富饒、得除一切所有的惡罪、遠離一切的魔障礙困難、成就清淨的功德、能成就一切所有的善根、遠離一切的恐懼害怕、速能滿足一切所希望所求的，希望世尊能夠慈悲的允許我向大眾宣說。』 釋迦牟尼佛聽見觀世音菩薩的請求，釋迦牟尼佛就說：『善男子，你是如此廣大的慈悲要向大眾宣說大悲咒，現在正是時候，我隨喜你的功德，十方諸佛也隨喜讚嘆你的功德。』
此咒名稱彰顯了觀世音菩薩欲安樂利益一切眾生之廣大圓滿、無礙大悲的大悲願力，及此咒不但能除一切災難、以及諸惡業病苦；且能成就一切善法、隨心滿願；遠離一切怖畏、速登佛地的威神特德。今人以大悲咒簡稱之，取之觀世音菩薩慈披眾生之大悲願力而命名。
釋宣化，現代佛教高僧，信眾尊稱他為宣化上人，在美國舊金山創立萬佛聖城，他是將佛教傳入西方世界的先驅者之一，對於佛教在美國西岸的推展有很大貢獻，他在台灣佛教界也擁有許多信眾。
在弘法方面，上人教導弟子天天參禪打坐、念佛、拜懺、研究經典、嚴持戒律、日中一食、衣不離體，和合共住，互相砥礪，在西方建立行持正法之僧團，以圖匡扶正教，令正法久住。又開放萬佛聖城為國際性宗教中心，並於1994年成立法界宗教研究院，提倡融合南北傳佛教，團結世界宗教，大家互相學習，溝通合作，共同追求真理，為世界和平而努力。

Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery, Redwood Valley, California
Abhayagiri, or Fearless Mountain in the canonical language of Pali, is a Theravadin Buddhist monastery of the Thai Forest Tradition in Redwood Valley, California. Its chief priorities are the teaching of Buddhist ethics, together with traditional concentration and insight meditation (also known as the Noble Eightfold Path), as an effective way of completely uprooting suffering and discontent.
About 16 miles (26 km) north of Ukiah, the monastery has its origins in the 1980s when the UK-based Ajahn Sumedho, foremost western disciple of the Thai meditation master Ajahn Chah, started getting requests to teach in California. Visits by Ajahn Sumedho, as well as other senior monks and nuns, resulted in the Sanghapala Foundation being set up in 1988. The monastery's first 120 acres (0.49 km2) were given to the foundation by the devotees of Chan Master Hsuan Hua, founder of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Talmage, before he died in 1995. Currently, the monastery rests on 280 acres (1.1 km2) of mountainous forest land.
Six months after the monastery was settled by Ajahn Amaro, Ajahn Pasanno arrived to join him as co-abbot. They served together in this role until July, 2010, when Ajahn Amaro departed to take up the invitation to serve as abbot of Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in England.Ajahn Pasanno was the sole abbot of Abhayagiri between July, 2010 and July, 2018.

Ten Thousand Buddhas by Amanda Giacomini is a worldwide, highly sought after art project, including large scale murals, fine art paintings, works on paper, and apparel.
The Ten Thousand Buddhas project has been featured on the National Geographic Channel, New York Magazine, Yoga Journal, Yoga International, Mantra Magazine, Origin Magazine, and Marin Magazine.
The story behind Ten Thousand Buddhas:
I think like the first year was 99. The second year was maybe like 700 or 800 and then the third year was like thousands and the fourth year thousands. And it just kinda picked up steam.
It was inspired by a trip I took to the Adjanta Caves in India where I saw this amazing, ancient Buddhist mural of 1,000 little monks sitting together and I wanted to go back there, I wanted to see it again.
It just had so much resonance for me that I started to paint Buddhas myself. And once I started, I just couldn't stop.
When I first committed to making the first 10,000, the first painting of 99 took me almost a year. So I was like, uh oh, if I do 10,000, I may not do it in this lifetime, unless I find a way to speed up my process. So that's when I started to learn more street art techniques and I learned about stenciling and wheat pasting and print making. And then once I got into those modalities, the project really got momentum.
I wanted to paint them so it first looks like they're all the same, and then as you look closer, you see that they're all taking different gestures because that, to me, is also kinda how we look at people. We might look at like, oh these people are all the same and then we see the uniqueness of each one and sorta that play between we're all the same, but we're all a little different too.
When I'm really in it and painting for a while, or doing a really big mural, sometimes I just drop into a place that it's so light-filled. It's just, I don't feel any aches and pains in my body, my mind is completely steady and one-pointed, and it really is similar to a state of yoga.
Especially with this project, it's about consistent effort over a long period of time. That's one of the yoga sutras. Abhyasa and vairagya. It's about being consistent and steady with our practice and being patient because it takes a long time for them to take affect.
The number is less important now than the spirit of the project, which is to spread a message of compassion and connectivity and
community across the globe. And I feel like the initial goal was important to get me to expand my vision and now that I'm coming up close to it, I just hope to keep going.
And that mission has no end.

Legend has it that the State Preceptor Doseon used his great powers to build 1,000 Buddha statues and 1,000 in the course of a single night. The temple is thought to have prospered until the mid or late Goryeo Period. Although only the temple's foundation remains, a Thousand Buddhas and a Thousand Pagodas are said to have survived until the early Joseon Period. Now, only seventy stone Buddha statues and seventeen stone pagodas remain at the site. These folksy stone Buddha statues carved in awkward positions and stone pagodas with peculiar patterns provide us with valuable insights into the local culture in Goryeo times.

Steven Stahler is an astrophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley. Raised in Maryland, he attended graduate school at Berkeley in physics. He was a professor at MIT before returning to the Bay Area in 1992. His research centers on the problem of star formation, which he has attacked from many different perspectives. He is the author, along with Francesco Palla, of The Formation of Stars (Wiley, 2004), the first comprehensive text in this field. Steve especially enjoys the esthetic aspect of his research, which he tries to convey in his public talks and articles. Not coincidentally, he is also an accomplished artist.
Daniel Matt is one of the world's leading authorities on Kabbalah. He has published over ten books, including God and the Big Bang: Discovering Harmony between Science and Spirituality; The Essential Kabbalah (translated into seven languages); and Zohar: Annotated and Explained. Daniel is currently engaged in an immense project of translating and annotating the Zohar, the masterpiece of Kabbalah. So far, he has completed six volumes of The Zohar: Pritzker Edition (Stanford University Press), covering approximately half of the Zohar. For this work, Daniel has been honored with a National Jewish Book Award and a Koret Jewish Book Award. The Koret award called his translation a monumental contribution to the history of Jewish thought. Dr. Matt has been featured in Time Magazine, and has appeared on National Public Radio and the History Channel. For twenty years, he served as professor at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and has also taught at Stanford University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Daniel lives in Berkeley, California with his wife Hana.
Rev. Heng Sure, a native of Toledo, Ohio, became a Buddhist Bhikshu (monk) at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, Talmage, California, in 1976, after finishing his M.A. in Oriental Languages at the University of California, Berkeley. He ordained in the Mahayana tradition of Chinese Buddhism with his teacher in religion, the late Chan Master Hsuan Hua. In 1977 Heng Sure commenced a Three Steps, One Bow pilgrimage for World Peace, traveling up the California coast from South Pasadena to Ukiah. He and his monk companion covered a distance of eight hundred miles in two years and six months, during which time pilgrimage and for three years following Heng Sure observed a vow of complete silence. Rev. Sure currently serves as Director of the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery and holds a Doctorate in Religion from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, California, where he co-teaches a class on Buddhist-Christian Dialogue. He has represented Buddhism on the Global Council of the United Religions Initiative and has served on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Center at the Presidio. Rev. Heng Sure is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, French and Japanese. He speaks around the world on topics as diverse as human values in the hi-tech world, eating a harmless, plant-based diet, and translating Buddhist music into the West. An accomplished folk musician and storyteller, Rev. Sure interprets traditional insights for contemporary seekers of the path to liberation.
