Originally a beauty shop, barber shop, and bar, Willie Mae’s Scotch House in New Orleans is now the home to what many claim is the best fried chicken in America. The Meat Show host and professional carnivore Nick Solares drops by to see for himself.

http://www.vrbo.com/180206 Architectural Work of Art Turn of the Century Uptown Home
This house is the ideal location for Superdome and Convention Center events (10 minute drive). Located four houses off renowned Magazine Street. This New Orleans home is ideally located for a casual stroll to antique and eclectic shops, unique restaurants, the many bars and coffeehouses, or to just enjoy the scenic street shaded by beautiful old oak trees. In the heart of historic uptown New Orleans, you are only a streetcar ride from many local attractions. The St. Charles Avenue Streetcar takes you to the famous French Quarter; the Convention Center; the Riverwalk; and the Superdome; all within three miles.
The following is just a sampling of my favorite restaurants, music venues, and fun things to do close to my home:
Walking distance:
Mona's: excellent Mediterranean food, inexpensive, BYOL; Baru: (great tapas) Jamaican cuisine; 2 fantastic French restaurants: Petite Grocery and Lilette; Theo's pizza; Ignatius Eatery (all New Orleans food); Nirvana: Indian cuisine; Casamento's: best oysters in the city; Savvy Gourmet Restaurant; Superior Grill; Canon's Restaurants on scenic St. Charles; Fuel Coffee House and Magazine Perks for goood coffee; Le Bon Temps Roule (great local live music, NEVER a cover charge, good late food), Brother's III Lounge (more of a local neighborhood bar); Ms. Maes famous 24 hour iconic bar; Buddah Belly Bar; Fat Harry's Bar; and of course, world renown Tipitina's for big name live music, and of course, all or the eclectic shops on Magazine St (too numerous to count!)
Very close (VERY short drive, longer walk): Dick and Jenny's: a must (probably the best food in the city...really!); La Crepe Nanou, French, in expensive, my favorite; Frankis and Johnny's; Sunday brunch or cocktails at Column's Hotel; Commander's Palace for the ultimate classy New Orleans experience, sushi at Kyoto; evening live music at Dos Jefe's Cigar Bar, Upperline Restaurant, Balcony Bar and Grill, Bulldog Bar and Grill, Cafe Rani (good place to sit outside under a big oak), August Moon (Chinese); Mahoney's Po Boy Shop (great Po Boys!); Delachaise and Canon's Restaurants on scenic St. Charles Ave; Nacho Mama's (Mexican and GREAT margaritas); Reginelli's Pizzaria; Prytania Theatre (stand alone neighborhood movie theater); cemetery and Garden District walking tours, Whole Foods.
Short drive: French Quarter, Convention center, Superdome, New Orleans Arena, Downtown, Audabon Park and Zoo, The River Walk, New Orleans Center, countless restaurants and shops.
There is off street parking for three vehicles. (Although you really do not need one!) The house is fully furnished, has wireless internet; satellite TV (Direct TV) with NFL Sunday Ticket package; two Huge HD TV's; modern kitchen; washer and dryer. Upstairs is a spacious loft with two large balconies; wet bar; jacuzzi and glass shower. Downstairs are two bedrooms, the larger bedroom has a queen bed and the smaller bedroom has a full bed (which is actually a very comfortable full sized futon with a memory foam mattress).
In the back of the house is a shaded garden patio with a bar-b-q and hammock.
This is not a condo or a duplex ~ this a most unique and beautiful home. It is truly a work of art. I am very particular about who I rent the property to because it is MY HOME, and I will only be renting it out for a limited time. If you are interested, I suggest you reserve your spot today. It'll be my pleasure to assist you in any way during your stay. I have lived in every part of the city and I can assure you that staying here will give you the feel of the REAL New Orleans!
For exact location and proximity, I recommend Googling the intersection of Magazine Street and Marengo Street. You can then easily see the proximity to all the local attractions.

These Are Hands Down The Best Places To Eat Fried Chicken
Though intrinsically connected with Southern cuisine, you can nowadays find phenomenal fried chicken at restaurants in pretty much any state. From the many exceptional fried chicken eateries around the country, we've plucked out the very best of the best. Good luck deciding which one you're going to try first.
The Philly cheesesteak has long reigned as Philadelphia's top culinary artifact. But thanks to one up-and-coming chain of Philadelphia restaurants, fried chicken is working its way up the list.
Eater Chef of the Year Michael Solomonov, his business partner Steve Cook, and local coffee shop owners Tom Henneman and Bobby Logue have been working to establish Philly as a fried chicken Mecca since opening Federal Donuts in 2011. The restaurant specializes in fried chicken, coffee, and donuts. That's all they serve. Henneman says,
It's three comforts under one roof.
Inspired by Korean fried chicken, the birds at Federal Donuts are twice fried for a, quote, teeth-shattering crispiness. The chicken can be coated in a choice of dry seasoning: za'atar, coconut curry, or buttermilk ranch. Or there's a wet glaze of chili garlic, sweet soy garlic, or honey ginger. Whether glazed, seasoned, or plain, the fried chicken is always served with a moist honey donut.
As a slave's granddaughter growing up in rural poverty, Mildred Council, nicknamed Mama Dip, likely never imagined she'd one day serve her fried chicken to fans including Michael Jordan and President Barack Obama. But she did — thanks to some of the most delicious fried chicken ever.
Mama Dip learned to cook working alongside her mother-in-law in a tiny takeout kitchen that quickly earned a reputation for serving the best homemade country dishes in town.
Since opening her own restaurant in 1976, Mama Dip has become a culinary icon. Before farm-to-table cooking was in vogue, Mama Dip sourced all her ingredients from local farmers. Mama Dip's menu hasn't changed much over the years, focusing on Southern comfort staples such as chitlins, smothered pork chops and fried chicken. Her crispy, southern-style birds are paired with classic sides including collard greens and fried green tomatoes.
Mama Dip passed away in the spring of 2018, but her culinary legacy lives on through her fried chicken, which is still served at Mama Dip's Kitchen by her children and grandchildren.

Irma Dixon: Conversations about African American Leadership in New Orleans
Irma Muse Dixon was the first African-American elected to the Louisiana Public Service Commission (PSC), representing the Third District (1992-2004). In the early 1980s, Dixon was affiliated with the Total Community Action Agency and its Central City Health Clinic, run by former State Representative Dorothy Mae Taylor, the first African-American woman to serve in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Through this agency and clinic, a generation of rising black politicians such as Dixon were groomed. In 1988, Dixon was elected to represent District 95 in the Louisiana House of Representatives (1988 – 1992), resigning upon her election to the Public Service Commission. Dixon has served in Louisiana state government with the Office of Employment Training and Development and as an undersecretary in the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. She has served New Orleans city government as Director of the Department of Recreation and the Director for the New Orleans Department of Property Management. Today she is a security manager for Xyant Technology. Mrs. Dixon is active in the Urban League, the Boys and Girls Club of New Orleans, the YWCA, and New Orleans Second Baptist Church. In 2009 she was chosen to head Beacon of Hope, a New Orleans charitable organization. Dixon earned a B.A. from Southern University in Baton Rouge, a masters degree in social work from Tulane University, and is a fellow of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Gumbo Episode - Dooky Chase Restaurant (2 of 4)
When your gumbo changes the course of America, no introduction needed. Watch now, ‘cause the historic Treme neighborhood walls of Dooky Chase Restaurant are talkin’ in this episode of Love to Eat New Orleans.
In partnership with New Orleans & Company, Love to Eat New Orleans is a new digital food show featuring our favorite New Orleans area restaurants. Produced, directed and hosted by New Orleanians, we’re reaching out to locals asking where they LOVE TO EAT.
Love to Eat New Orleans is a fresh take on our old favorites and new ones too. We’re taking you into the kitchens of world-famous restaurants, hidden gems and everything in between. We’ll be talking with local celebrities & meeting the chef’s behind our favorite food and the customers who LOVE it.
Each week we’ll post on social media a category. The categories range from specific dishes, locations, cuisines or topics like dog friendly restaurants. Our three hosts will then take off all over Greater New Orleans to feature those suggestions. We’re focused on interesting and entertaining stories, unique New Orleanians and of course great food.
So, where do YOU Love To Eat?

Genealogist Who Tracks Down Modern-Day Slavery Practices
Slavery might have ended on paper after the Civil War, but many white landowners did everything they could to exploit newly freed slaves well into the 20th century. Thousands of black laborers across the South were forced to work against their will as late as the 1960s—a new form of enslavement that went on in the shadows of rural America.
VICE's Akil Gibbons traveled to Louisiana to meet genealogist Antoinette Harrell, the “slavery detective of the South, who tracks down cases of modern-day slavery and abusive labor practices. They talk to a man whose family was held on a plantation against their will into the 1950s, and Antoinette explains how she uses decades-old records to uncover how slavery was perpetuated long after the Civil War ended.
