Day 1 On The Colorado Trail
Today I flew from Toronto Ontario to Denver Colorado and took a cab to the CT Trailhead where I started my 46 day adventure on the Colorado Trail with the Collegiates East and West.
I hiked 8 miles from the Waterton Canyon trailhead to Lenny’s Rest where I found my first amazing campsite.
It was raining on and off but I was VERY happy to be on the trail after all that research, planning and training.
These are the Day to Day videos of my 46 day thru-hike of the Colorado Trail in 2014 including the Collegiate Peaks Loop,(East and West). The Colorado Trail is a long-distance trail running for 486 miles (782 km) from the mouth of Waterton Canyon south west of Denver to Durango Colorado.
The Trail is divided into 28 segments and 5 segments that make up the Collegiate West which runs for 80 Miles, Its highest point is 13,271 feet above sea level, and most of the trail is above 10,000 feet. It is often considered one of the most beautiful trail mile for mile in the United States.
I was new to thru hiking and didn't have any of the proper equipment, so I researched all the gear I’d need, trained really hard and completed the trail with no big issues at all.
I researched the trail and couldn't find any detailed videos on what the water sources look like, where to resupply, the weather, campsites and how the terrain changes so much in a day.
I made it my goal to capture the trail and my experience on it, in hopes that it will inspire others to get out and explore their own trail just like I got inspired by other people's thru hiking videos.
This is the largest group of videos about the Colorado Trail, and will be a great resource for anyone planning a trip on the Colorado Trail.
Hope these videos help you with planning your adventure on the Colorado Trail.

Segment 1 is 16.8 Miles long and starts in Waterton Canyon Trailhead ends at the Gudy Gaskill Bridge crossing the South Platte River.
It follows a well maintained dirt road for the first 6.7 miles, dogs are not allowed on the first 6.7 miles.I seen Mule Deer and a big group of Bighorn Sheep along the Waterton Canyon Road.
Lenny's Rest at mile 7.9 is a great spot to take a break, I camped up hill from here, it had been a long day traveling into Colorado from Toronto Ontario.
You can find some nice campsites beside Bear Creek Mile 8.7 here is a good spot to filter water and is also the last reliable water source for 8 miles.
There are some really nice views at the high point in Segment 1.
The end of Segment 1 is at the South Platte River Trailhead on County Road 97

The Colorado Trail : Video Time Lapse : Seg # 2
Segment 2 is 11.5 Miles long and starts at the South Platte River Trailhead and ends at the Little Scraggy Trailhead
In the beginning of Segment 2 you cross Gudy Gaskill bridge and enter a big burn area that was the 1996 Buffalo Creek wildfire that burnt over 12,000 acres
This Segment is very hot and dry, no shade anywhere, so make sure you filter water at the South Platte River because it is the last reliable water source for 12.8 miles
When you near the end of Segment 2 there is a fire station at mile 10.1 along County road 126, I would recommend getting water here after that long dry stretch through Segment 2
Segment 2 Ascends 2,482 Ft and Descends 753 Ft

Day 3 On The Colorado Trail
Today I hiked through the rest of the burn area to the Fire Station along highway 126 to get water after that long dry stretch, then to the end of Segment 2 and on to Segment 3 (Little Scraggy Trailhead) which has a lot of mountain bikers. Another great day of hiking and made it to mile 11.9 in Segment 3 where I washed up cooked and camped.

Day 43 On The Colorado Trail
These are my Day by Day videos of my 46 day thru-hike of the Colorado Trail in 2014 including the Collegiate Peaks Loop,(East and West).
I was new to thru hiking and didn’t have any of the proper equipment, so I researched all the gear I’d need, trained really hard and completed the trail with no big issues at all.
I researched the trail and couldn’t find any detailed videos on what the water sources look like, where to resupply, the weather, campsites and how the terrain changes so much in a day.
