St. Elizabeth's Church of the Catholic Third Order of Saint Francis is a Gothic church in Wrocław, Poland. The structure dates back to the 14th century, when construction was commissioned by the city. The main tower was originally 130 meters tall. From 1525 until 1946, St. Elizabeth's was the chief Lutheran Church of Breslau/Wroclaw and Silesia. In 1946 it was expropriated and given to the Military Chaplaincy of the Polish Roman Catholic Church. The church was damaged by heavy hail in 1529, and gutted by fire in 1976. The church's renowned organ was destroyed. The reconstructed main tower is now 91.5 meters tall. An observation deck near the top is open to the public. Since 1999 there is a memorial on the church property to Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a native of the city and martyr to the anti-Nazi Cause.

Pope John Paul II on Sunday (11/10) decreed the first Jewish-born saint of the modern era - Edith Stein, a nun killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz.

Stein, born in 1891 at Wroclaw, Poland, converted from Judaism to Roman Catholicism after studying philosophy in Germany. She became a Carmelite nun and went to live in a convent in Holland.

In 1942, the Nazis ordered all the converts in Holland shipped to Auschwitz. The Nazis arrested Stein as she prayed in chapel with her Carmelite sisters. She died at Auschwitz on August the ninth, 1942.

Twenty thousand Catholics filled St. Peter's Square for the canonisation ceremony declaring Edith Stein a saint.

The Jewish born nun who converted to Catholicism died in the Nazi gas chambers at Auschwitz.

In honouring Stein, the Pope also announced that Catholics would commemorate the Holocaust on August the ninth every year - the day of the newest saint's death.

Outgoing German Chancellor Kohl attended the ceremony, along with the ordained father of teenager Teresia McCarthy, cured by a miracle attributed to the nun.

The Pope called Stein an eminent daughter of Israel and faithful daughter of the Church but stressed she died because she was Jewish.

Edith Stein stands out as a beacon amid the terrible darkness which marred this century, he said.

Edith was born into the Orthodox Jewish faith in eighteen ninety one in Poland. By World War Two, having converted to Catholicism and become a Carmelite nun she found herself in the Auschwitz death camp.

Her canonisation has not pleased Jewish groups who asked that it be cancelled.

SOUNDBITE (English): Perhaps this is some expression of guilt on the part of the church for the fact that she was turned over to the Nazis but, at the same time, she can in no way symbolise the Jewish martyrs of the Holocaust because she chose to leave Judaism';
