Dingle Way (2018) - Beautiful Ireland
We walked the beautiful Dingle Way in Ireland this spring (2018). The walk is about 160km and goes around the wonderful Dingle peninsula in south-west Ireland.

A trek around the Dingle peninsular in the south west of the Republic of Ireland: 13-23/07/19. The route is through hills and farmland then along coastal paths and beaches. It passes Tralee Bay, Castlemaine Harbour, Dingle Harbour, Ventry Harbour, Smerwick Harbour, Brandon Bay, Scraggane Bay. Along the war there are many wildflowers, butterflies and birds.

Part 1 was from Tralee to Dingle via Camp, Inch, and Annascaul. This section of the trail is known as the Kerry Camino.
Part 2 is the main body of the Dingle Way and continues from Dingle to Dunquin, Mount Brandon, Cloghane, and back to Camp.

We are at the western edge of Europe visiting Dingle on the Atlantic coast of Ireland. We are taking a drive out into the countryside to the Slea Head panoramic loop with marvelous scenery, lots of green hills, sheep, stone walls and archaeological sites. This is some of the best scenery in Ireland if not the world.
Dingle is out on the peninsula a little bit hard to get to and yet it's one of the nicest places in Ireland - it's got the urban charm of the town but it's a small town, and has beautiful natural countryside we explore in this episode.
Most visitors find the real attraction is the surrounding areas with the beautiful countryside and the historic sites, with a few minute’s drive you’re at the edge of town and in the countryside almost immediately. Driving from Dingle out around the peninsula and back again is just about 25 miles so you can easily do it in half a day while stopping to look at the sites. We're lucky that some of Ireland's prehistory is still quite visible with stone structures that have survived for thousands of years. The :beehive hut” stone domes site was occupied until about 1200 A.D. by which time it had evolved into a farmstead for an extended family with the habitation site and with the corrals and room for livestock farm buildings and storage places.

The Wild Atlantic Way is considered to be the pinnacle of Irish coastal scenery it is now recognized as the worlds longest single coastal tourism trail and takes in some of Ireland's most magical place and of course the Dingle Peninsula is the highlight of the route .

The Dingle Peninsula in Kerry, Ireland, has to be one of the most spectacularly beautiful places on Earth. I was warned the weather was not going to be great this week, but as it turned out the sea mist that so regularly shrouds the headland at this time of year made the whole place seem even more ethereal than usual. The only downside was not being able to see the mountain tops or even to get the opportunity of viewing the scenery from the top of Mount Brandon. Down below, however, the sea was just something else, and since it was still pretty humid, it was a delight to swim in, even though I was slightly lumbered with my camera equipment and my car etc.
I stayed at the Benners Hotel in Dingle, the oldest hotel in the town, which is the most westerly town in mainland Europe. It's right in the centre of town, with great staff, service and most importantly a vibrant bar area. Having travelled for two days beforehand and slept in a tent the night before, I was particularly pleased at the great night's sleep, and even more so at the enormous breakfast I hovered the next morning to prepare myself for a day of filming along the Dingle.
It took me most of a day to get from Dingle to Slea Head (00:52), mainly because I was compelled to stop literally every 200 metres to take another clip of the magnificent views. Unfortunately, when I got to Dunquin, it started really heaving it down with rain, so sloped into a Youth Hostel at the top of the road opposite the very informative Blaskets Interpretive centre. The Blaskets are a group of islands just off Dunquin where a community lived until 1953 who spoke only Irish language. In the 1930's a group of people from the Island emigrated en masse to Springfield MA, and by 1950 only 25 people remained. The Dingle Peninsular, and Connemara are only two places in Ireland where you can now find Irish spoken as a first language.
On speaking to the landlady at the Hostel, we got on to the subject of Ryan's Daughter, the masterpiece of a film by David Lean, which was filmed around Dunquin in the late 1960's. As it happened, the road running alongside the hostel, was literally at the foot of the hill where a village was specially made for the film, and what's the more the old school house, now derelict, stood just half a mile away in the other direction. The next morning, I rose early to walk up to find this location, only to find the track, the elevation of the road I remember so clearly from the film, a few foundations and lots of sheep. There is barely anything left. The view up there was incredible though. I then moved on to the old school house (04:10), which sits right on the edge of a cliff with walls in good condition, but sadly with its tiles all blown off. The main giveaway was the modern mortar in the walls, the breeze blocks inside and a few pipes, but other than that, I could get myself in a position where I could remember the scenes of Michael (Sir John Mills) and the priest Trevor Howard emerging from the gate. At 07:30am it felt magical, and yet so few people came here.
At the foot of the hill is the beach where they filmed the gun running scene, when Leo McKern nearly lost his life while running into the water to grab boxes of ammunition. You will notice the path on the way down to the beach (04:55) and a few of the rock formations, but note that other beaches were also used for this scene, including Inch beach (05:15) further back along the Peninsula, now a surfers paradise.
The rest of the drive around the peninsula was equally awe-inspiring with a number of sites I hope to visit the next time, which will happen in 2012 if all goes well.

I hope the Dingle Way Dingle Peninsula Drive Map will help you organise your road trip with attractions along the route. The Dingle Peninsula and Slea Head Drive in Ireland is a great road trip especially if you are lucky like me to get good weather. The map shows you the main route, but you can also add the Conor pass on your way back if you are an experienced driver. The pass road is a narrow one lane winding road passing through some of the tallest Irish mountains.
A great starting point to the drive is the Killarney town if you are doing the drive as part of the Wild Atlantic Way. Killarney has lots of pubs, shops, accommodations and restaurants. Another good starting point is Kerry airport if you arrive by plane to Kerry region.
From both it should take you 30-40 minutes to reach Inch Beach. From there you can head out to Dingle which is a cute little colourful town where you can spend some time at the shops or in the marina. I now regret now spending 2 days to do this drive to allow more time in some of these cute little towns.
Leaving Dingle town head towards Ventry and you are now on the Slea Head Drive, a smaller road that will take you around the coast. You will see plenty of signs that will guide you to follow the road. Don’t listen to the GPS which will tell you to follow a shorter not so scenic road.

We've been exploring the West Coast of Ireland and now we’re visiting Dingle which some people would say is the finest destination in the country. Dingle is a lush green peninsula extending out into the Atlantic Ocean.

We stop by the roadside for a lovely view looking down towards the coast and across the green fields.
Next stop, Dingle, our home base for the next couple days. The town is one of Ireland's best with excellent hotels, of course many pubs, and in recent years, Dingle has become one of the gourmet capitals of the country with many fine restaurants. We will be taking you inside a couple of them. The drive in gave us a nice overview and will be taking you on several walks through town.

So we hop in our van and do a tour of the peninsula. It's not unusual to run into some rain when you're out here in the far tip of Europe, in the Atlantic Ocean. And we had some rain this morning, but it cleared up a little bit during the day.
Dingle is a peninsula sticking into the sea at the western edge of Europe, set amid wild green scenery surrounded by the ocean.
One of the main historic sites you'll see is Dunbeg Fort. It's quite typical of the Celtic fortresses of the Iron Age in Ireland. It's built right up against the edge of a cliff, so it's easy to defend itself with the big walls on one side and the sea cliff on the other.
