Nghệ Thuật Công Cộng: Từ A Đến Z // Art In Public: A To Z
---
Speakers: Hoàng Thúc Hào, Nguyễn Thế Thanh, Ly Hoàng Ly and THACO (representative)
‘Art in Public: A to Z’ is a discussion aimed to increase awareness on what makes art ‘public’. This discussion is part of the series of public programs responding to Ly Hoàng Ly’s solo exhibition.
What is public art? How can such an artwork relate to the public space in which it is located? What does it mean to create art for, and in, public space today? Is it still relevant, or enough, to just plant a static mass in a designated communal zone and assume it will enter into a public imagination that is discussed and remembered?

First Factory Visit in Vietnam
Our first visit to a factory in Vietnam! With continued pressure from the Trump Tariffs, we decided it was time to start making contacts south (really west) of the border. Caught a flight, hopped on the back of a Grab bike, and went to the factory. Outside of Hanoi, we saw examples of molding (plastic injection molding and aluminum die casting), CNC machining, large scale metal work, in this case outdoor poles, and electronics assembly. Enjoy! Looking forward to sharing more as we continue to explore around Asia.

Để Xây Dựng Một Triển Lãm, Cùng Nhau // On Making An Exhibition Together
(English below)

Two curators, two artists, one exhibition. How does this work (out)? What does this ‘work’ entail and who does this ‘work’ involve - internally and externally? Coming from two countries (Indonesia and Vietnam), sharing certain similarities, but also with vastly different contexts, backgrounds, experiences and social circumstances, what does it take for four individuals to make an exhibition, together? Collaborativeness; a willingness to listen and be challenged; an openness to change and flexibility; but, what else? What about debates, arguments, even failures? How do we share complicities? How to embrace all these matters, while having to ensure an exhibition needs to be made? How is the audience considered?
Join this four-way discussion between curators Grace Samboh and Bill Nguyễn, and artists Julia Sarisetiati (Sari) and Vicky Đỗ to find out more! This event is part of the public programs satelliting ‘We’re in this, together’, the resulting exhibition as part of the first edition of ‘Pollination’, a program driven by the need to create critically active and supportive artist-curator-community networks within Southeast Asia. Initiated by The Factory, this inaugural edition is co-developed and co-sponsored, with SAM Fund for Arts and Ecology (Indonesia).
This discussion will take place in English with Vietnamese translation. Due to space limitation, please be on time to secure your place.

Trò Chuyện Cùng Oanh Phi Phi // Artist Talk With Oanh Phi Phi
(English below)
//
Walking in to the glowing chamber of Oanh Phi Phi’s pictorial installation called Specula is an experience that transports the viewer into another world. You walk slowly through this dome-shaped tunnel and your movement casts differing light levels on its walls. As a consequence the patterns that mark its lacquer skin refracts in differing hue, a sensation made all the more palpable as the frosted glass floor you are standing emits its own warmth. It feels like an organ of a body. Sitting adjacent to this work is Palimpsest, a series of what Phi Phi terms ‘Lacquerscopes’, where images of lacquer ‘skin’ is variously projected on the wall from metal stands that subsequently become personified, as if they are rare anthropomorphic machines with multiple eyes. The viewer here becomes a kind of explorer, where the light emitting from these sources lends life to the weight, form, and scale of this exhibition. Here lacquer is transformed beyond its physicality, there is an immersive science to the work, where one’s desire to touch, to understand, to hold is palpable.
Join us for a conversation to unravel Oanh Phi Phi’s motivations behind her ‘Interface’ exhibition and why she considers lacquer her key medium of passion. This talk will be in English with Vietnamese translation. Due to space limitation and to ensure the talk quality, please be on time to secure your best seats.

VIETNAM - Lost in Saigon
This is a little bit of what I’ve seen in Saigon. Little back streets, a strong sense of community, so many smiling faces and children playing in the streets. I am creepy enough to get close and observe what they do, their lives, their habits, what they eat, how they play. I love it, it’s not on the “top 10 things to do” but for me, this has the REAL flavour!
