Dancing Elephant at Ganesh Temple Pondicherry
Dancing Elephant at Ganesh Temple Pondicherry || Pondicherry Trip || Top 10 place to visit in Pondicherry || Visit to Auroville || Puducherry
19Jan2017, Day2: Pondy Darshan (auspicious sighting of the shrine)
We woke late and walked to Indian Coffee House in the market for breakfast, good dosa and coffee. We planned breakfast at Ananda Bhavan but the dosa there wasn’t looking crisp, then it was self-service. It is a sweets shop and all kinds of vegetarian meals, so the dosa and other snacks did not appear to be their forte and the filter coffee was also questionable. So we sat down and then changed our mind, the filter coffee being the deal-breaker. Later we visited the temple nearby, Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam, the #1 place to visit in Pondy. The elephant comes out at 4 PM so we needed to return for this. A pujari specializes in blessing new vehicles, two and four wheelers are lined up for the service and I duly got a few photos. The temple was built in 1980 but gets hordes of devotees, always full. Then we went to the Pondy Museum next door to the temple, it has excellent bronzes. On our way back to the guesthouse we got an excellent lemon tart (which was really ‘tart’ as promised) at the ‘Eat My Cake’ Café and Bakery next to the theatre, highly recommended. Using free Wi-Fi here we found that the #3 place to visit was Paradise Beach. So later we took out the car and drove to Paradise Beach, it is about a half hour drive out of Pondy. It is a fishing village with at least 2 superb resorts on the beach. Not many public visitors at the beach on a weekday at 5 PM, maybe later. Drove back to avoid driving in the dark and to catch the last of the daylight on the Promenade, which we did. After sunset we had dinner at La Terrace restaurant, the second restaurant next to the Park Guesthouse with a bar in-between. Excellent Pizza and the other dish we ordered was good too, highly recommended. The ‘Eat My Cake’ bakery is run by a Frenchwoman who is training the local women to bake, so the local women do the baking at their factory and all the servers also have gone thru the training and can alternate as bakers too.
Later from 8 till 9:30 PM we watched dances by school children at the stage next to the Gandhi Mandapam Statue on the Promenade by the sea side. This was sponsored by the Auroville Ashram.

South India Full Day 3 - Mamallapuram monuments & Pondicherry
Jeff’s birthday at Mamallapuram monuments site-Shore Temple, Five Rathas & Arjuna’s Penance. Secret men's bar, Pondicherry French Quarters, fun elephant blessing and parrot astrology.
South India travel video. Overseas Adventure Travel group tour Soul of India - the Colorful South, Friday 10-24-14: The day started with Jeff's birthday celebration by Krishna's butterball at the amazing Mamallapuram Unesco World Heritage monuments site. Sudha, our tour guide, explained to us the differences of the cave carving process where whole temples are carved out of rocks. We could see practice walls and caves by the roadside where young sculptures trained in the art. I guess people would really be upset with you if you made a mistake and messed up a whole temple and years’ worth of work.
We also saw the amazingly intricate rock art called the ‘Descent of the Ganges”, with myriad of carved designs, including cobras, huge elephants, baby elephants, monkeys, real people, mythical beings, etc. This is where Arjuna’s Penance is carved. Sudha gave us background on his story, which is part of the Mahabharata, the longest known Hindu epic poem. Watch for the story of the sneaky cat with the full belly :)
We then visited the Five Rajas. A set of temples modeled after chariots (it's also called The Five Chariots). It's mind-blowing that people would even think of carving out that much rock to form these huge structures. They are not built - they are carved out! even the negative space between the temples and the huge animal statues has been purposely flattened.
Next stop was Unesco World Heritage Shore temple, believed to be part of what sailors used to call the Seven Pagodas which they used as navigation landmarks. The temple faces the Bay of Bengal and must look like a pagoda from the sea. Warning about an incident of abuse towards a dog. We have to remember that in some countries/areas treating animals with kindness is an emerging idea. It needs to be taught. Kindness IS contagious.
We then visited what Sudha calls secret men's bar because that is where men go to hide from their wives. They tell their wives they are going to work and then go to the bar to drink with their friends. We tasted the local beer and got to see how they serve the liquor - the water comes in a little plastic bag!
Afterwards, we had a wonderful lunch at Le Club in Pondicherry, enjoying the succulent fresh fish that we were served so often in South India. We walked the French Quarter of Pondicherry, seeing the beautiful Eglise de Notre Dame des Anges (Church of Our Lady of Angels) which was built by French Missionaries in 1865 and is modeled after the Lourdes Basilica, policemen wearing kepis, the French military caps with the flat circular top and visor, and streets with names such as “Rue Dumas”. The police station, labeled in French “Maison de la Police”, actually had a pretty little garden in front of it. We saw a genuine 'chaiwala', tea selling vendor, rickshaws, tuk tuks, and men and women picking up their kids from school on scooters. Sudha sawed us how he used to make whistles out of tree leaves when he was a boy.
We then walked by the Pondicherry Promenade. Kids were having fun climbing up to the statue of the 'Father of India' Mohandas Gandhi and people were starting to get together for pleasant strolls and to watch the beautiful sunset. Goubert Avenue (Beach Road) that runs by the Bay of Bengal turns pedestrian in the evening and comes alive - the whole promenade fills with vendors selling food, drinks, and all sorts of things. Great people watching place, but unfortunately, I was too tired to return – maybe a reason to visit Pondicherry again :)
Several of our travelers were told their fortune by a parrot. Parrot astrology or fortune-telling used to be very prevalent in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Nowadays the practice is in jeopardy of disappearing. The astrologer has a trained parrot in a cage and stacks of special cards in front of him. There are 27 cards with images of Hindu deities, Buddha, Jesus, or the Virgin Mary. He lets out the parrot and, with his beak, he selects a card from the stack, and hands it to the astrologer / fortune teller who interprets it for you based on the image that is selected. It seemed pretty accurate!
Then, near Ganesha's Temple, we had a very fun interaction with Lakshmi, a smart and adorable necklace wearing elephant that blesses you by tapping you on the head. Sudha bought greens for us to give her, but she really preferred money. It's unbelievable how delicate elephants can be with that big strong trunk. She hands the bills to the mahout so smoothly, she could have been a pick-pocket.
Nearby is the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a Hindu meditation retreat, that had a lovely garden and was full of people, but we were not allowed to take photos or video.

Pondicherry And French Collaburation
Pondicherry is a popular tourist destination in South India. The city has many colonial buildings, churches, temples, and statues which, combined with the systematic town planning and planned French style avenues, still preserve much of the colonial ambiance.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram
While the sea is a popular draw for tourists, Pondicherry no longer has the beautiful sand beaches that once graced its coastline. The breakwater to the harbour and other hard structures constructed on the shore caused extreme coastal erosion and the sand from Pondicherry's famous Promenade Beach was permitted to disappear entirely. As a result of the town's seawall and groyne construction, the beaches further up the coast to the north have also been lost. An enormous deposition of sand has accrued to the south of the harbour breakwater, but this is not a commodious beach and is not easily accessible from the town.
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, located on rue de la Marine, is one of the most important ashrams in India, founded by the renowned Freedom Fighter and spiritual philosopher Sri Aurobindo. Auroville (City of Dawn) is an experimental township located 8 km north-west of Pondicherry. It is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.
There are a number of old and large churches in Pondicherry, most of which were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. A number of heritage buildings and monuments are present around the Promenade Beach, such as the Children's Park & Dupleix Statue, Gandhi statue, Nehru Statue, Le Café, French War Memorial, 19th Century Light House, Bharathi Park, Governors Palace, Romain Rolland Library, Legislative Assembly, Pondicherry Museum and the French Institute of Pondicherry at Saint-Louis Street.
Puducherry is also popular for its eateries that cover a wide variety of cuisines ranging from French, Indian and Italian to Mexican, Thai and Chinese. Some restaurants also serve a unique Indo-French cuisine that gives tourists a taste of Puducherry's colonial influences. Most popular eateries include Baker's Street, The White Town Cafe, Zuka, Carte Blanche and La Maison Rose.
Puducherry Botanical Gardens is located south of the New Bus Stand. Chunnambar Backwater resort is situated 8 km from Pondicherry, along the Cuddalore Main Road. This tropical resort is flanked by a quiet-flowing creek on one side. Boating and tree house[clarification needed] are very popular.
Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam on Manakula Vinayagar Street is a Hindu temple, which houses Lord Ganesha. Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple was in existence before the French came and settled in Pondicherry i.e. before 1666. According to Sasthra, Lord GANESHA is named in 16 types based on his various forms, out of which this god facing the east coast near the Bay of Bengal was named as Bhuvaneshar Ganapathy, now called as Manakula Vinayagar. In Tamil, 'Manal' means sand and 'Kulam' means pond near the sea. Earlier, there was full of sand around the pond. So, the people called the god as Manal Kulathu Vinayagar [means God near the pond of sand]. Later, it was named as Manakula Vinayagar.
Thirukaameeswarar Temple is one of the ancient temples located in a rural town called Villianur (the ancient name is Vilvanallur, meaning vilva marangal niraindha nalla vur), which is located about 10 km away (towards Villupuram) from Pondicherry town. This temple is renowned as Periya Koil Big Temple. The prime god is Lord Shiva and the prime goddess is Goddess Kokilambigai. In addition, there are also other Hindu gods such as Murugan, Vinayagar, Thakshanamoorthy, Perumal, Bhramah, Chandikeshwarar, Natarajar, Navagrahah, and 63 Naayanmaars. The pioneers[clarification needed] in this temple say that the age of this temple is about 1000+ years. It is thought to have been built by one of the Chola kings. There is also a huge temple pond. The Ther Thiruvizha procession is celebrated at this temple.
Apart from sight seeing places for the tourists, there are a number of various bakeries and restaurants that cater to the Europeans taste buds. For others there are many Indian, Continental, Chinese and fast food restaurants to choose from. Pondicherry being once a French colony has good French cuisine i.e. Cafe des Arts, Rendezvous, Le Dupleix, Villa Shanti. Some other notable restaurants for pizzas Cafe Xtasi, Auro Pizza and Tanto Pizzeria and for bakeries Hot Breads, Daily Breads, Bon Bakes, Grand Bakery and Zuka Choco-La.
Walking path in Auroville , Pondicherry
To get a glimpse of Matrimandir in Auroville , one has to walk a distance of 1km under a shady walking path. The whole place is a young artificial forest created by the Aurovillians. Lots of varieties of plants all along the path. You will just not feel the distance cause you would be busy admiring nature. Those who cannot walk or with small kids can use the battery van facility at the Visitors center.
Ganesh Chaturthy in Auroville 17 9 2015
This year Ganesh Chaturthy occurs on Thursday the 17th of September from 4 pm to 5 pm
Sri Ganesh has his own abode in Auroville (at the entrance from the Highway). In fact Sri Ganesh has probably been the first resident of Auroville, as two years before the Auroville inauguration he was already one, a fact which is fitting, since before starting any adventure, enterprise or journey one seeks Sri Ganesh's blessings.
Everyone is welcome to his shrine, in the afternoon of the 17th of September, 4 pm to 5 pm.
The Aarti will be sung at 5 pm.
