In Practice: Alumni Symposium | A Sydney Gross Symposium
The event brings together alumni from architecture, urban planning and real estate development, to discuss different forms of practice that they are engaging in.
The speakers have all graduated from one of the programs offered at the School of Architecture and Planning in the past 10 years, and each has taken a distinctive path since. The symposium offers current students and other members of the School and community an opportunity to consider modes of practice within the realms of architecture and planning and at the intersection with other disciplines.
Individual presentations by each of the speakers will be followed by a general Q+A session as well as smaller group conversations directed by current students.

DISCURSIVE PRACTICES presents the work of architects, urban planners, preservationists and historians whose approach to design bridges multiple territories of knowledge to create new work.
Their provocations operate on discourses that simultaneously have long historical traditions and are actively evolving in the present. By acknowledging and engaging with the cultural and institutional basis of inherited knowledge systems, these speakers challenge reductive modes of analysis and reveal openings for expanding the social reach and relevance of contemporary design.

March Madness is just around the corner: college athletes from around the country will soon compete in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament in hopes of being crowned national champions.

Dozens of men's college basketball teams will compete in March Madness.

March 11
Get ready for Selection Sunday – the day the Division I Men's Basketball Committee officially announces which 68 teams qualified for the NCAA tournament.
Fans can tune into the March Madness Selection Show on TBS at 6 p.m. ET.
Thirty-six teams will be chosen to fill “at-large berths” to compete from the committee, which ranks all 68 teams and brackets them, the NCAA says. The other 32 teams are conference tournament champions who get automatic spots to play.
March 13 and 14
“The last four at-large teams on the overall seed list, as well as teams seeded 65 through 68, will be paired to compete in the First Four games on Tuesday and Wednesday following the announcement of the field,” according to the NCAA.
These games will tip off in Dayton, Ohio. The four winning teams will then advance to the first round of the tournament.
March 15 and 16
Sixty-four teams will compete in first-round games in Boise, Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Nashville, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Wichita in an attempt to advance to the next stage.
March 17 and 18
Thirty-two teams will battle it out in second-round games in the above-mentioned locations.
March 22 and March 23
The remaining teams will compete in the Sweet 16 round, which includes eight regional semifinal games in Alanta, Boston, Los Angeles and Omaha.
March 24 and March 25
Teams in the Elite 8 round will play in regional finals in those same four cities. The four winning teams will head to the next stage.
March 31
The Final Four round consists of two games in San Antonio.
April 2
The remaining two teams will duke it out in San Antonio for the national title.
Which teams have automatic bids to compete?
So far, 27 teams have won conference tournaments, making them automatic qualifiers. Those include the Arizona Wildcats, the Bucknell Bison, the Buffalo Bulls, the Cal State Fullerton Titans, the College of Charleston Cougars, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the Iona Gaels and the Kansas Jayhawks.
Also in the mix are the Lipscomb Bisons, the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers, the Marshall Thundering Herd, the Michigan Wolverines, the Montana Grizzlies, the Murray State Racers, the North Carolina Central Eagles and the New Mexico State Aggies.
The Radford Highlanders, the San Diego State Aztecs, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, the Texas Southern Tigers, the UMBC Retrievers, the UNCG Spartans, the Villanova Wildcats, the Virginia Cavaliers and the Wright State Raiders have automatic bids, too.

The North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs 71-65 in the 2017 championship game.
With the victory, North Carolina won the sixth national title in its basketball program’s illustrious history and head coach Roy Williams won his third championship, surpassing his mentor Dean Smith.

The renowned discographer, researcher, author, broadcaster and scholar of folk and ethnic music Dick Spottswood participated in a two-part event at the Library, featuring an interview about his career and accomplishments followed by a panel with prominent Washington area folklorists, ethnomusicologists, discographers and archivists highlighting his numerous contributions to American music.
- Among his many accomplishments, Dick Spottswood is celebrated as the author of the essential Ethnic Music on Records: A Discography of Ethnic Recordings Produced in the United States, 1893-1942, a seven-volume listing of early sound recordings by foreign language and minority groups in the U.S.; the 15-volume LP series Folk Music in America, produced for the Library of Congress to mark the 1976 Bicentennial; for his research on Caribbean, South American, bluegrass, blues, and country recordings; and for his contributions to hundreds of influential reissue recordings by labels such as Arhoolie, Rounder, Yazoo and Bear Family as well as his own Melodeon and Piedmont labels.

There are few traditions as storied and entrenched in our culture and society as college athletics. While the visibility and challenges of college athletics are widely recognized, less-known are the positive impacts participation in college athletics has on student athletes, 20 percent of whom are the first in their family to attend college. Yet, only in the United States do colleges and universities formally sponsor athletic programs, the costs of which can be high. Why do so many institutions put such an emphasis on athletics, and what impact does this have on colleges and universities, students, and our education system overall? How can college athletics be improved to better serve both students and institutions? And what would the country be like without college athletics?
In this forum, experts will engage in a conversation about the tangible and intangible benefits of college athletics, with the aim of broadening how we think about the role of sport and its impact on education and society.

In 1996 the Jacksonville Jaguars were in just their second season as an NFL franchise. However, even though they were a young franchise the Jaguars managed to not only make the playoffs, but also win a Wild Card game. Few, if any, expected this young team get past their next opponent, the Denver Broncos. The Broncos were tied for NFL high in regular season wins with 13 and led by future Hall of Fame quarterback, John Elway. Jacksonville did not let any of that faze them, as they pulled off one of the greatest upsets in NFL history.
