USA: COLORADO: MEMORIAL SERVICE HELD FOR SINGER JOHN DENVER
English/Nat
Thousands of people paid their last respects to singer John Denver at a memorial service in Colorado on Friday.
Denver was killed in a plane crash on Sunday.
The mourners had travelled from all across the U-S to say farewell to the singer at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Aurora.
Video screens had to be set out outside the church to give all mourners a chance to take part in the service.
John Denver was remembered by all at the service as a caring father and a good friend.
There was standing room only as more than two thousand people packed the Faith Presbyterian Church in Aurora, Colorado.
Outside the church, another 100 people gathered as Denver's music was played over loudspeakers.
Many sang along, some in tears.
The 53-year-old singer, known for the 1970s hits Sunshine on My Shoulders and Rocky Mountain High, died on Sunday when his homebuilt plane crashed off the California coast.
Denver's choice of lyrics prompted the Reverend Les Felker, a retired Air Force chaplain, to prepare his sermon on the subject matter of a sunset.
He referred to Denver as a man with boundless energy and creativity who loved nature and poured his passions into his songwriting.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
John Denver is a sensitive, caring, gentle, loving man. And that came through loud and clear in all of his music and his life and the impact he made. Millions, no billions are excited, thrilled, challenged, blessed and comforted over and over again by his music.
SUPER CAPTION: Reverend Les Felker
Others recalled Denver's limitless energy and enthusiasm.
Long-time friend Tom Crumb said the singer was never too busy or too tired to sing for a classroom of children or pick up a piece of trash on the roadside.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
But I tell you what - no matter what story John had going on - whether it was a deep personal issue, some legal battle, some mess that he had gotten into he stood up for what he believed in. It never held him back. It never held him back from standing up for children, the environment, for the hungry, for life. What an inspiration..he brought out the best in us when he did that..the best in us.
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Crumb, Denver's long-time friend
Others remembered his work to promote peace, save the environment, and help to end world hunger.
The last to remember Denver was his brother Ron, who played a tape of the last message the singer ever left him on his answering machine.
Also at the memorial service were Denver's two ex-wives, his three children, and his mother.
Friday's memorial service at the Faith Presbyterian Church was the first of two scheduled for Colorado's mourners.
A second service will be held on Saturday in Denver's adopted hometown of Aspen.

----------------------
American singer John Denver is rated among one of the most influential voices in music that has emerged in the last century and to this day his songs are popular in most parts of the English speaking world. It is often said that during the 1970s John Denver was peerless as far as musical appeal was concerned and that had a lot to do with the fact that his songs spoke about things that were vibrant and varied like country life, nature or about his own thoughts on love. After the swinging 60s, Denver ushered in a new era of music and went on to become one of the most loved music stars in the entire United States and indeed in most parts of the world. However, what set him apart from plenty of singers of the era was the fact that he was also an activist and this side of his personality shone through in his songs. In addition to that, he was a singer who wrote and composed his songs on his own, other than on occasions when he participated in group efforts with other singers or music groups. Last but not the least; Denver had also featured in movies which went on to become quite famous due to his presence. Read on to know more about his life
-----------------------
Childhood & Early Life
On December 31, 1943 Henry John Deutschendorf Senior and Emma Louise Swope gave birth to a child in Roswell, New Mexico named Henry John Deutschendorf Junior, who was later known as John Denver. His father was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force and hence the family often moved from one city to another.
John Denver was gifted with a Gibson guitar, when he was only 2 years old, by his grandmother and that was how he was initiated into the world of music.
He continued to dabble in music throughout his teenage years and only joined a band when he started going to ‘Texas Tech University’ located in Lubbock to study architecture. The band that he was a part of was known as ‘The Alpine Trio’ and it was after joining that band that he adopted the moniker John Denver.
In the year 1963, Denver discontinued his studies at the ‘Texas Tech University’ and decided to try his fortune in the world of music in Los Angeles. Once in Los Angeles, it took him two years to find a folk group called ‘The Mitchell Trio’ and that was well and truly the tentative beginnings of a professional music career.
-----------------------
Career
It as in the year 1969 that John Denver took his most important career decision and decided to abandon being part of different bands. Instead he decided to be a solo performer and his very first album was hence produced. It was titled ‘Rhymes & Reasons’.
The biggest turning point in his career came in the year 1969 when the song ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ was released and became a smash hit instantly. Interestingly, the song had been recorded two years prior to its release.
Denver released two albums; ‘Take Me to Tomorrow’ and ‘Whose Garden Was This’ in the year 1970. A year later his next album became another huge hit thanks to the song ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ and sold a million copies.
Throughout the 1970s John produced one hit after another under the guidance of his manager and producer Jerry Weintraub. Some of the smash hits included ‘Sunshine on my Shoulders’, ‘Annie’s Song’, ‘Thank God I’m a Country Boy’, among singles.
The talented singer also became a known face on television during his career and became a guest in the hugely popular ‘The Muppet Show’ in 1974. Three years later he starred in the film ‘Oh God’ and although it wasn’t a hit it showed that Denver was an extremely marketable brand.
Along with author Werner Erhard and physicist Robert Fuller, this renowned artist successfully established ‘The Hunger Project’ in the year 1977 and it was only the beginning of his future work as an influential peace activist.

North Star Lodge, a Masterpiece of Western Ideals in Aspen, Colorado
Presented by Aspen Snowmass Sotheby's International Realty
For more information go to
Overlooking the serene setting on the North Star preserve with views of the Roaring Fork River and Aspen Mountain, this one of a kind home is what you dream of finding in Aspen, but never do. Painstakingly built by craftsmen wanting to follow lines of historical structures, yet influenced by whimsical artistry, the home is a Masterpiece of Western ideals. The scale of the rooms are impressively large with soaring windows to capture the colossal views of the surrounding mountains, and yet these large spaces exude warmth, comfort, even a coziness. The materials were all hand selected - massive beams from the 1980s fire from Yellowstone, antique tiles that tell the history of the discovery of the Americas and Aspen bark-lined walls are just a few of the unique materials. Named North Star Lodge, this enchanting estate surrounded by National Forest was made for families to build memories for generations to come. Nothing can be built adjacent to or in the view plane of the Lodge.

Rocky Mountain high - CO. National Monument. John Denver live
[Since Youtube took down my upload of the whole concert, here's an alternate way to view and download it - ]
This clip is from John Denver's live album John Denver : Wildlife Concert .
He brilliantly sings this version of Rocky Mountain High which has louder acoustics and percussion than the common version ..
If you are interested to buy the album (which has many other good songs), here's the link -
Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles.
Colorado National Monument's Rim Rock Drive is one of the most spectacular drives in the United States. Redrock canyons, crisp blue skies, and verdant green juniper splash fantastic views along the way for motorists and bicyclists. However, the road is challenging, narrow, and steep in some sections with sheer dropoffs. Special considerations must be made for road travel since motorists and bicyclists share the road. Use caution when on tight corners and hills. On the east side of the monument, motorists may encounter large trucks that use four miles of the monument's roadway to access the community of Glade Park.
