Thai IKAT Silk Weaving 2
Traditional Thai designs are woven into the fabric using the IKAT method. The design is not stamped onto the fabric after weaving. Designs in dyeing are developed by binding specific sections of the silk prior to dyeing. Only the unbound sections receive the color. This process can be repeated to achieve more complex designs. After dyeing, only minor adjustments in the weaving are needed to develop the intended design.

Northern Thai Weaving
Traditional weaving is still very important to the culture of rural Thailand. Here, my friend Maesinee interviews two ladies who make this wonderful fabrics under their houses in Ban Rai, Uthaithani. There was quite a lot of banter in the beginning but Maesinee found a way to get to the content.

Thai Traditional Hilltribe Weaving (Back Strap Loom), Chiang Mai
The back-strap loom is used by the many hill tribes for their weaving, as their nomadic lifestyle makes it difficult for them to set up standing looms.

The Silk Village--See new voice over: A Silk Weaving Documentary from North East Thailand
In the Thai village of Puai, women have been hand-weaving silk for generations. Using an ancient method called mudmi, the silk yarns are resist-dyed before the weaving takes place, creating of the intricate, colorful patterns that makes their silk fabric so special. The process begins long before the weaving stage, starting with the raising of silk worms which are fed exclusively on mulberry leaves, followed by the nurturing of the cocoons, then the spinning of silk yarn from the slender threads of the cocoon.
