Book Burning Memorial - In A Berlin Minute (Week 27) [HD]
RE-PUBLISHED (original date: November 1, 2010) -- --
In May 1933 students burnt the works of hundreds of authors on a square in Berlin (and throughout Germany). In 1994/95 a memorial called Bibliothek (library) conceived by Micha Ullman was built within what is today called Bebelplatz. The memorial is an underground room full of empty shelves that can be viewed through a see-through plate in the ground.
Commemorative plaques near-by state the following:
Das war ein Vorspiel nur, dort
wo man Bücher verbrennt,
verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen
Heinrich Heine, 1820
English translation: That was only a prelude, where they burn books, they ultimately burn people.
In Der Mitte dieses Platzes verbrannten am 10. Mai 1933 Nationalsozialistische Studenten die Werke Hunderter freier Schriftsteller, Publizisten, Philosophen und Wissenschaftler.
English translation: In the middle of this square Nazi students burnt the works of hundreds of free authors, journalists, philosophers and scientists.
Admittedly the memorial is most effective at night when the room is lit-up. And probably least visual on the bright sunny day I recorded it. But the contrast of how the tourists and students approach the memorial with the thought of the students during the Nazi dates being riled up and burning the books, was very intriguing to me.

Monument Walk Berlin, Book Burning Memorial
In January 2012 young people from 8 different countries visited 3 monuments in Berlin and made short documentary films. The films focused on the history of the monument and its societal relevance (or lack of it). People in the vicinity were asked whether they were aware that the monument existed and what they thought of the monument.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe - Berlin / Germany
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, also known as the Holocaust Memorial, is a memorial in Berlin to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Buro Happold. It consists of a 19,000 m2 (4.7-acre) site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs or stelae, arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. The stelae are 2.38 m (7 ft 10 in) long, 0.95 m (3 ft 1 in) wide and vary in height from 0.2 to 4.7 m (7.9 in to 15 ft 5.0 in). They are organized in rows, 54 of them going north–south, and 87 heading east–west at right angles but set slightly askew. An attached underground Place of Information holds the names of approximately 3 million Jewish Holocaust victims, obtained from the Israeli museum Yad Vashem.

Nazi Book Burning
On May 10, 1933, German students under the Nazi regime burned tens of thousands of books nationwide. These book burnings marked the beginning of a period of extensive censorship and control of culture in Adolf Hitler's escalating reign of terror.
In this short film, a Holocaust survivor, an Iranian author, an American literary critic, and two Museum historians discuss the Nazi book burnings and why totalitarian regimes often target culture, particularly literature.

POTSDAM TOUR, AMAZING BERLIN CENTRAL STATION, BERLIN WALL
This is a #Taglish vlog and the 8th episode of our travel chronicles here in Europe. We decided to hop on some trains and head outside Berlin. Potsdam is really charming with its old buildings and amazing historical vibe. We loved our stay albeit short. We then headed back to Berlin where we walked towards Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin Wall remains, and stayed a bit in one of my favorite crossroads - the Potsdam Platz, jaws dropped at the sheer size of the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Berlin Central Station) and the Branderburg Gate.

Empty Bookshelves Memorial at Humboldt University, Berlin
This memorial recognizes that Nazis infamously burned books on Jewish topics and other non-Nazi conforming ideas from Humboldt U here, as well as other universities, in May 1933. This memorial is smack dab in the middle of Bebelplatz between a Humboldt University building and the Staatoper House on Unter den Linden. Visible below the glass plate is a vast underground library of empty shelves, said to be able to hold 20,000 books. Inscribed in a plaque is a sentiment by a German author that, paraphrasing. where they burn books they will eventually burn people.

Architecture. Daniel Libeskind Jewish Museum Berlin
The Jewish Museum Berlin (Jüdisches Museum Berlin) is one of the largest Jewish Museums in Europe. In three buildings, two of which are new additions specifically built for the museum by architect Daniel Libeskind, two millennia of German-Jewish history are on display in the permanent exhibition as well as in various changing exhibitions. German-Jewish history is documented in the collections, the library and the archive, in the computer terminals at the museum's Rafael Roth Learning Center, and is reflected in the museum's program of events. The museum was opened in 2001 and is one of Berlin’s most frequented museums (almost 720,000 visitors in 2012).
Opposite the building ensemble, the Academy of the Jewish Museum Berlin was built – also after a design by Libeskind – in 2011/2012 in the former flower market hall. The archives, library, museum education department, and a lecture hall can all be found in the academy.
The Jewish Museum Berlin is located in what was West Berlin before the fall of the Wall. Essentially, it consists of two buildings – a baroque old building, the “Kollegienhaus” (that formerly housed the Berlin Museum) and a new, deconstructivist-style building by Libeskind. The two buildings have no visible connection above ground. The Libeskind building, consisting of about 161,000 square feet (15,000 square meters), is a twisted zig-zag and is accessible only via an underground passage from the old building.

The Bismarck Memorial - Bismarck-Nationaldenkmal - the sights of Berlin.Национальный памятник Бисмарку достопримечательности Берлина.
The Bismarck Memorial (German: Bismarck-Nationaldenkmal) in the Tiergarten in Berlin, is a prominent memorial statue dedicated to Prince Otto von Bismarck, Minister President of the Kingdom of Prussia and the first Chancellor of the German Empire. It was sculpted by Reinhold Begas. It is one of 250 memorials to Bismarck worldwide.
This memorial in Berlin portrays Bismarck in his ceremonial garb as Chancellor standing above statues of:
Atlas, showing Germany's world power status at the end of the 19th century;
Siegfried, forging a sword to show Germany's strong industrial and military might;
Germania pinning underfoot a panther, symbolizing the suppression of discord and rebellion;
a sibyl reclining on a sphinx and reading the book of history.
The statue, along with the famous Berlin victory column, were once located in front of the Reichstag building before they were moved in 1938 by Adolf Hitler in his project to recast Berlin as Welthauptstadt Germania. The statue weathered a marked amount of shrapnel damage during World War II, but has survived largely intact to the present day. In fact, the move probably saved the monument from total destruction, as the old garden in front of the Reichstag was completely obliterated in the war.
