CHINA: DECOMMISSIONED P&O SHIP S-S ORIANA FINDS NEW HOME
Natural Sound
From monarchy to people's republic, a former ship of Britain's royal fleet has found a new home in China.
Bought by a Chinese entertainment company, the 40 year old luxury liner S-S Oriana arrived in Shanghai's harbour to be refitted and reopened as a floating museum to the royal way of life.
This ship, docking in Shanghai's harbour, is the S-S Oriana - a 245 metres-long luxury liner which used to be the Asian yacht of Britain's Royal Family, and which now belongs to the Peoples Republic of China.
Built in England in 1960 as the sister boat of the `Queen Elizabeth', the S-S Oriana was the flagship of the P&O maritime company.
Considered for many years among the world's 4th most luxurious ship, the S-S Oriana was decommissioned in 1986.
Bought then by a Japanese company, the ship made its last trans-ocean trip to Japan where, after renovation, it served ten more years as a luxury pleasure ship.
Then, because of its age, the old ship from Liverpool, England, became no longer commercially viable.
But due to its historical past, as signs aboard the ship still indicates, it is still able to attract attention.
In 1995, a Chinese businessman travelling in the south of Japan, noticed her anchored in a harbour and expressed his interest to her Japanese owners.
The ship crossed the Yellow sea to end up in the northern Chinese port of Qinhuangdao on the Bohai sea in Hubei province, where, for 3 years, she was used as an entertainment spot, floating karaoke club and hotel.
At the beginning of 1998, a Shanghainese local tourist company owning a department store chain decided to buy it and make it their company emblem and try to restore some of her glorious Royal past.
The company objective is to renovate the ship, its 300 bedrooms, dancing and dining halls, swimming pool, golf court, cinema, bars and open it up to the Chinese public.

Before this kind of ship came here, people in this country would have got no chance to go aboard a luxurious boat like this, nobody would have allowed them and they would not have been able to. Now it will be different. Ordinary people who will want to enjoy for a while the atmosphere of a luxurious ship will be able to for a small amount of money. I think
it's a great idea to provide Chinese ordinary people with this kind
of opportunity.
SUPER CAPTION: Zhang Yuan, Oriana Entertainment Co.
The Shanghai Oriana Entertainment Company is expecting to spend 120 million renminbi (14.5 million US dollars) in the first phase of renovation.
This first phase should be completed by the end of march 1999.
Once renovation is fully completed, at the end of 1999, the S-S Oriana will at last return to her intended duties - taking visitors and steaming up and down the Huangpu river.

First-Ever Cruise Ship Christened In Shanghai - PART MUTE
How do you possibly top a sold-out 141-day world cruise from Miami to London? Possibly with an historic stop in Shanghai – the first time one of Viking’s ocean ships has called in China.
Viking Sun, the fourth ocean cruise ship from the river cruise giant was just officially christened during a spectacular celebration on The Bund.
Classified as a “small ship” by Cruise Critic, the 930-guest, 47,800-ton vessel arrived this morning, navigating into the mouth of the Yangtze River and then up the Huangpu River to a warm welcome from locals and boats in the harbor.
Mrs. Yi Lou, Vice President of China Merchant Bank Financial Leasing (CMBFL), served as ceremonial godmother and offered a blessing of good fortune and safe sailing for Viking Sun – a naval tradition that dates back thousands of years. In keeping with the christening custom, Mrs. Yi Lou also cut a ribbon that allowed a bottle of Norwegian aquavit to break on the ship’s hull.
When the voyage ends in London in early May, passengers will have visited five continents, 35 countries and 64 ports. Viking Sun will continue to sail the globe during a second World Cruise, a 128-day itinerary from Miami to London, which departs in January 2019.
HONG KONG: THE FUTURE: AFTER COLONY REVERTS TO CHINA IN 1997
Cant/Eng/Nat
On July 1, 1997 Hong Kong will be at the centre of international attention, as it reverts to Chinese control.
Every hotel in the territory has already been fully booked and all eyes will be focused on the tiny island in Southeast Asia.
Many Hong Kong residents have already left Hong Kong and emigrated to Canada, the U-S and Australia in fear of the unknown circumstances they may have to face under a Communist regime.
But APTV found that not everyone among Hong Kong's many different kinds of businesses and trades was so pessimistic about the future.
From the majestic skyscrapers housing Hong Kong's high rollers, to the smallest street corner residents, people here are looking forward to the colony's next 18 months and beyond with mixed emotions.
The 3-6-9 restaurant is where 37-year-old Shum Chung-hong works.
He came to Hong Kong from Shanghai 5 years ago with his wife and two daughters, hoping to make a better living for his family.
He holds two jobs as a waiter, one at this Shanghai restaurant and another in Kowloon.
He earns modest wages and works at least 12 hours a day.
He has lived under China's Communist regime, and says that for people in his economic bracket, the change in government will make little difference.
SOUNDBITE: (In Cantonese)
You know, we're one of the lowest level workers therefore wherever I go it's the same for me. Whether I'm working in Shanghai or Hong Kong, it's the same for me.
SUPERCAPTION: Shum Chung-Hong, Waiter
After 1997, he plans to stay in Hong Kong to raise his daughters and he hopes to open his own business one day.
These two local advertising agency executives have built their lives around their business.
They opened up this agency two years ago and they do not plan on leaving Hong Kong because they think that the influx of mainland Chinese people will bring them more business and revenue.
SOUNDBITE: (In Cantonese)
I don't think that Communism is frightening, I just think that we need an adaptation period to understand their function and what types of policies we'll have to adjust to. I think that all we need is this adaptation period, it's not frightening.
SUPERCAPTION: Elza Kwok, Director of advertising agency
Her partner agrees, he is looking forward to 1997 and has confidence in the Chinese government.
SOUNDBITE: (In Cantonese)
I think that the Chinese government will allow Hong Kong to continue to make a living and I don't think that there are any problems with mainlanders coming to Hong Kong.
SUPERCAPTION: Jimmy Ng, Director of advertising agency
Although they are wealthy enough to emigrate to a Western country, they say that the combination of good business opportunities and family roots here will keep them in Hong Kong post-1997.
But this couple -- who have owned a jewellery business on Hong Kong island for six years -- are not as optimistic about their future here.
Mr and Mrs Alejo have an almost-exclusively expatriate clientele, and fear both a big influx of mainland Chinese, and corresponding exodus of foreigners.
They say that business has been going well for them so far, but they are not sure what is in store for them, come 1997.
SOUNDBITE: (In English)
My thinking is that there will be some changes to come about the changeover in 97 and those changes will probably be for the worse rather than for the better. Because how can it be better than it is today? We're just laissez-faire and you're able to go and do the things that you want to do, set up businesses very easily and have a low tax regime.
SUPERCAPTION: Celso Alejo, Jeweller
Although both he and his wife plan to stay in Hong Kong post-1997, they will consider relocating to another Southeast Asian country if business falls off.

Hong Kong - Retiring expat civil servants depart
T/I: 10:31:40
The cruise ship Oriana set off for Britain on Thursday night (6/3) with 53 retiring expatriate civil servants and 72 dependants aboard. They're leaving the colony as the deadline for the 1997 Hong Kong handover to China approaches.
The officers are being phased out of the territory's civil service as the Hong Kong government embarks on a program of localization - giving jobs formerly held by expatriates to local Chinese residents.
