Nanyang Malaysian Edinburgh - Meadows Park
after having a lunch in Nanyang Restaurant and we walked to Meadows Park opposite the restaurant for a break and gathering with our family(15-May-2016)
A pleasant afternoon walk in the Meadows, Edinburgh, Scotland.
The Meadows is a large public park in Edinburgh, Scotland, to the south of the city centre.
It consists largely of open grassland crossed by tree-lined paths, but also has a children's playground, a croquet club, tennis courts and recreational sport pitches. It is bordered by the University of Edinburgh's George Square campus, the George Square Theatre and the Quartermile development on the site of the old Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to the north and Marchmont to the south. To the south-west it becomes Bruntsfield Links where there is a free, public pitch and putt golf course.
The Meadows originally contained a loch, known as the burgh loch or, later, the South Loch. It covered much of the area bounded in the east by Hope Park Terrace and in the west by the point where Melville Drive becomes Brougham Street, and in the south by Melville Drive and in the north by the site later occupied by the Old Royal Infirmary, a total of 63 acres (250,000 m2). The loch drained from east to west, where the burn known as the Loch-rin was sluiced to prevent the water from draining out. It is from this burn that the street names Lochrin Buildings and Lochrin Place in Tollcross derive. Until Edinburgh's first piped water supply from Comiston arrived in 1621, the loch provided much of the town's drinking water.
It was partially drained in the mid-17th century and for a time named Straiton's Loch or Straiton's Park after the burgess who tried to improve the area. In 1722 Sir Thomas Hope, 8th Baronet Hope of Craighall (c. 1681–1771), an agricultural improver and politician, ordered more drainage work, making the marshy land into a park with a path round the edge, hedges, avenues of lime trees, drainage canals and a summer house. The central tree-lined path known as Middle Meadow Walk followed, and for several decades maps labelled this area as The Meadows or Hope Park. It is the traditional practice ground of the Royal Company of Archers, whose meeting-place is nearby. In 1827 an Act of Parliament protected the Meadows from being built upon.
Though animals were grazed there and notable Edinburgh citizens are known to have walked there, there was no full right of public access until the middle of the 19th century when new paths were gradually added, criss-crossing the park. An exception to city council rules against building on the land was allowed for the temporary large glass pavilion of the 1886 International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art.The whale's jawbones forming an arch over the Meadows path called Jawbone Walk originally formed the display stand of the Zetland and Fair Isle Knitters Association. Having been severely affected by weathering, the Arch was removed in 2014 for restoration.

In the 1870s the Meadows became an important venue in the early development of football in Edinburgh. Amongst the numerous fledgling teams using the Meadows were Heart of Midlothian F.C. and Hibernian F.C., later to become the city's preeminent sides, and the first derby match between them was played there on 25 December 1875. Although a modern plaque has been placed near Whalebone Arch to commemorate the event, the main pitch was on the eastern fringe of the park, running from east to west, parallel with the Boroughloch Brewery.
The Second World War brought more than 500 allotments to the east end of the Meadows as part of the effort to make the nation more self-sufficient in food. By 1950 many local residents wanted the area re-turfed, but it was 1966 before the last signs of vegetable cultivation were removed.
In the late 1960s, plans to complete a flyover over the Meadows for a trunk road were defeated.

Edinburgh 2012 Scots March to Demand Independence from the UK - entire march-off from the Meadows
2012 independence demonstration - thousands of Scots marched for independence on 22 Sept '12. This is a video of the entire march-off leaving the Meadows, a green in a university area in Edinburgh. Pipers headed the march playing Scotland the Brave. Many people carried or wore Scottish saltire flags, some carried yellow flags with lion rampants. There were groups of pro-independence activists from several other countries coming out in solidarity with the Scots and to draw attention to their cause. Lots of different flags were flown including Basque flags, Catalonian flags, Venetian flags and Flemish flags, with the Venetian group chanting San Marco. There were lots of different groups with different political opinions and different reasons for wanting independence e.g. those who want to withdraw from NATO and save the resources for something constructive such as building up the new nation after independence, those who want to end persecution or discrimination at the hands of their respective colonising governments, those who want to utilise their natural resources such as oil in Scotland to fund services instead of having to suffer austerity measures and cuts as a result of their money being siphoned off to the capitals of their colonisers to bail out bankers and corporations and let off their tax-dodging billionaire personal benefactors with corporate tax avoidance and evasion. Some people got into the cultural spirit and dressed up in traditional costume. Many people wore kilts and some carried objects symbolic of Scottish culture such as animals native to Scotland and one wore a green Nessie (Loch Ness monster) head-dress costume. Several people wore costumes reminiscent of famous historical movies such as Braveheart. Some people had leather warriors costumes or chain mail with a helmet and were equipped with a large yellow shield with lion rampant or a bow and arrow. Different political parties were represented on the march and there were groups for independence for Northern Ireland, anti-cuts activists, pensioners groups and many more.
There were many varied banners and placards e.g. a pro-independence for Northern Ireland banner of the James Connolly Society Edinburgh with the slogan let us rise. There was a Basque solidarity banner followed by several marchers with Basque flags, some with the Basque Country's name in Basque language Euskal Herria on them. There were saltire flags with various slogans like rise and be a nation again end London rule or with place names such as Callander or Ayr on them or showing solidarity to occupied nations such as Palestine with a miniature Palestinian flag in the corner of one saltire. There was a banner advertising the upcoming radical independence conference on Nov 14th 2012 as many people on the left feel that independence will be useless unless it involves real change, not just keeping the status quo doing what the bankers and corporations want and keeping the monarchy and NATO, but an independence that will involve spending the country's rich resources on services that will benefit the majority of Scots. Various political parties such as SSP, Greens, SNP and Solidarity were there with their banners. There was a pensioners for independence banner, a women for independence, independence for women banner, a youth and students banner, fringed red and gold Veneto flags, Flemish yellow flags with black lion rampants and a Padania is not Italy banner. Various placards or flags had Yes and place names such as Oban for independence or Yes Alexandria or Edinburgh Pentlands yes Pentlands, yes Scotland Aberdeenshire or Tayport marching for independence. There was a green Scotland placard and a no to Nato placard. There was also a trade unionists banner for a Scottish workers republic with a red flag and saltire illustration. There were Yes Scotland banners and lots of placards simply reading Yes and one placard reading Yes the future is in your hands, another showing the red lion rampant and a mouse with the words which are you? One demonstrator shouted free Scotland! and there were various other chants and shouts including we are marching for independence to the tune of bella ciao. It took 24 minutes for the front to the back of the demonstration just to start moving off, such were the numbers on the demo.

Independence Demonstration Thousands Assemble in Meadows Edinburgh Scotland
2012 demonstration for independence in Scotland. The demo took place on September 22nd. Scots assemble in the Meadows, a large green in a university area in Edinburgh before the march-off. As the folk are gathering traditional Scots ceilidh accordion music as well as more modern music is played to enhance the mood of the demonstrators. Pro-independence people from other countries also turned up out of solidarity for the Scots and to promote their own independence causes and struggles. Some people wore traditional costume such as kilts and one kilted demonstrator had a toy highland cow peeking out of his rucksack, another wore a Nessie Loch Ness Monster costume, some Scots wore chain mail and helmets and carried large yellow shields with a red lion emblem or else they wore leather costumes carrying a bow and arrow. The lion rampant was also on a lot of the flags and many people had Scottish saltires draped over their shoulders as well as flying them. A lot of the international contingents of the demo wore traditional costume and flew their flags too. A large contingent from Venice (which had previously been an autonomous country north-east of Italy for over 1000 years before being acquired by Italy) stood out with their red and gold flags and enthousiastic chanting of San Marco. The flags had 6 tails each one representing a sestiere of Venice. A group from Flanders also brought their flags. Some Basque Country flags were also flown at the demo and one had the name of their country in Basque language Euskal Herria on the flag. The Basque language is discouraged by the Spanish government who don't want them to become independent and the Basque people have suffered a lot of persecution just as Irish have at the hands of the British state. There were also Catalonian flags at the demo as the Catalonian people also want independence from Spain. There were many different groups and individuals on the march with many shades of opinion. There were various political parties, a Christian group, anti-cuts and anti-nuclear and environmental activists, supporters of Irish independence including those with a James Connolly banner as well as those who were into Braveheart and historical Scottish culture. There were lots of placards from Pentlands promoting the Yes vote in the 2014 referendum on independence. Activists on the Left promoted a radical independence conference to be held on 24 November 2012 to launch a campaign to make sure that independence will bring radical change that benefits the majority. One demonstrator was wearing a T-shirt with the names of various colonised countries that had received their independence and the dates of their independence with Scotland's date to be announced.
