Samurai daimyō ritual service in Sendai
Lord and founder of Sendai Date Masamune was a powerful daimyō in northern Japan in the time of swords and samurai. A top vassal of Shōgun Tokugawa, he lived and ruled 400 years ago.
That part of Japan's history has now passed, but still his decendants and those of his warriors gather in ceremony at Masamune's tomb (Zuihōden) at the coming of the new year.

What to do at a Japanese Matsuri (Festival)?
Every third weekend of May, Sendai holds one of its biggest festivals, the Aoba Matsuri. An average number of 900,000 people visit this festival every year. The city center transforms into a very colorful and cheerful area. In this video you will see and learn about various things: The big parade at Jozenji Dori (the beautiful avenue lined with zelkova trees), what Japanese festival food looks like, what the Suzume Odori (Sparrow Dance) is, who Date Masamune is…. and many many more things!
It was especially cool to see my friends who were part of the Tohoku University festival team. You and all the other performers practiced hard and did a great job!
The dance performances of the Tohoku University team are at the following minute marks: 02:45, 09:23, 11:23, 15:12, 18:04.
I wanted to take enough time to explain the history and the various activities you can see and do there. Especially aimed at foreign viewers who wonder what a Japanese festival (Matsuri) looks like! My hope is that, after watching this video, you may want to visit Sendai!

Leaving Kakunodate for Sendai | Japan 2016 | Episode 12
Our time in Kakunodate and the wonderful Wabizakura ryokan had come to an end, our next stop was Sendai.
We started our day in the light of morning. Yes, finally we awoke after the sun for the first time on our trip so far. Jet lag has been a killer on this trip for some reason, but we were starting to get over it. Before we begun our journey to Sendai we had a leisurely morning to enjoy the last bit of our time at this ryokan. We forced ourselves out of our cozy futons, which wasn’t that hard to do knowing we were steps away from our hot onsen. We didn’t have too long to soak, we had another amazing Japanese breakfast waiting for us. We can’t say enough good things about the food at the Wabizakura, every meal has been outstanding. Benefit of having an early breakfast is that we were able to fit in one last quick soak in the onsen before we packed our bags and were driven to the train station.
We were a little early for our train which gave us a bit of time to look around the quiet little station. The smaller stations are a pleasure to visit as they generally have open platforms which allow for interesting views, something you miss at the larger stations. We had an easy ride to Sendai, no transfers. Along the way we passed through Morioka station where we witnessed the linking of two trains on our way to Kakunodate a few days prior. This time we felt the linking as our Komachi was linked with a Hayabusa.
It wasn’t long before we arrived at Sendai station, well, we did hit speeds in excessive of 300km/h. Sendai station is a large one, with a lot to explore, all kinds of shops and restaurants. And outside there is very convenient raised pedestrian walkways, under which lives the bus terminal. We decided to walk to our hotel, The Westin Sendai, as it was only a 10 minute walk.
We were in our room before we knew it, marvelling at the amazing view we had from the 36th floor.
We fought the urge for a nap and headed out to explore Sendai. Our destination for the afternoon was Sendai’s extensive shopping arcades where we found all sorts of shops including a few konbini (convenience stores) and ¥100 stores. We even happened on a temple right in the arcade.
All that walking got us hungry and we hit up a tempura tendon restaurant which turned out to be excellent. It was fast, reasonable and delicious. We definitely walked away satisfied after dinner, and finally got our tempura cravings handled after missing out on tempura in Hakodate. By this point we were both exhausted and we headed back to the hotel for an early night, both hoping for a good nights sleep to prepare us for a full day out seeing the sights in Sendai.

JET Programme ALT: Taking a Tour of Akiu
Have you ever wondered if there is more to do in Akiu besides plunging in their famous hot springs and staying at one of the many ryokans? Follow along as we explore further in this beautiful community tucked away in the outskirts of Sendai on a guided tour to the often-missed but must-see locations. Through watching this video, I hope it inspires you to come explore this town rich in history and culture teeming with breath-taking nature and inhabited by many craftspeople inspired by their surroundings.
Through this channel, we have visited Akiu once before
, but I hope that this video inspires you to revisit because there is always more to see and do.
Locations visited:
Akiu Sato Center (秋保 里センター)
Akiu Winery (秋保ワイナリー)
Akiu-Sha (アキウ舎)
Akiu Village (秋保ヴィレッジ)
Sendai Kaleidoscopes Art Museum (仙台万華鏡美術館)
Akiu Great Falls (秋保大滝)
Tamaki-an (二代目たまき庵)
Sendai-shi Akiu Visitor Center (仙台市秋保ビジターセンター)
Akiu Shrine (秋保神社)
We had the opportunity to receive an all expenses paid tour of Akiu during a Friday, and thus as a business trip, organized by the principal of Akiu Junior High School and the previous ALT at the school. The tour includes stops that were recommended by the students of the Junior High School in which we explored in the morning and received presentation in the afternoon. It was such a unique opportunity as it combined learning Japanese culture and traditions while taking on the role as foreigners to allow students to practice their English and help guide sightseeing tourists around their community in the future. Thanks to Roley, and all the ALTs who participated in this international day and I hope to see you guys on the next adventure. Also thank you to the many venues throughout Akiu that hosted us and made us feel welcome in their community.
