1930's Mount Washington Cog Railway New Hampshire
This video is from an old 16mm home movie I had digitally transferred with some great old nostalgic footage of the Mount Washington Cog Railway taken in New Hampshire back in the 1930's.
The Mount Washington Cog Railway is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway (rack-and-pinion railway). The railway is still in operation, climbing Mount Washington in New Hampshire, USA. It uses a Marsh rack system and one or two steam locomotives and four biodiesel powered locomotives to carry tourists to the top of the mountain.
It is the second steepest rack railway in the world[2] with an average grade of over 25% and a maximum grade of 37.41%. The railway is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long and ascends Mt. Washington's western slope beginning at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet (820 m) above sea level and ending just short of the mountain's summit peak of 6,288 feet (1,917 m). The train ascends the mountain at 2.8 miles per hour (4.5 km/h) and descends at 4.6 mph (7.4 km/h). It takes approximately 65 minutes to ascend and 40 minutes to descend although the diesel can go up in as little as 37 minutes.

The Cog Railway is the first and oldest mountain climbing train in the world. Sylvester Marsh invented the Cog (used to ascend and descend the mountain) and braking system for the mountain climbing railroad. Known as 'Crazy Marsh', the NH legislature gave him a charter to build 'the railroad to the moon' in 1858. Initially he completed construction part way up the mountain in 1868. Then on July 3, 1869, 'Old Peppersass' (originally called 'Hero') became the first cog-driven train to climb 6,288 foot Mount Washington, home of the worlds worst weather. Take a ride with us on the new bio diesel train going up and an Old original steam train coming down. If this looks like fun, join us on a Photographic excursion by checking out the photo workshop schedule at lightchannelphotography.com. Enjoy! The Mount Washington Hotel
On the third episode of the White Mountain Adventures, High View Productions took a ride to the Omni Mount Washington Hotel. The Hotel opened in 1902 and is still in service today! I walked around and filmed some of the areas inside. I also filmed the beautiful mountains surrounding the hotel.
