Korea, the Country of Descendants of Independence Activist from Cuba
Azaria Lim was the first student from Cuba to study in Korea. She is a fourth-generation Korean-Cuban.
Korea and Cuba do not have diplomatic ties yet, but Azaria was able to come to Korea with the help of her late great-grandfather, Lim Cheon-taek, who made large contributions to helping Korea achieve national independence. During Japanese colonization of Korea, Lim Cheon-taek lived in hardship with his single mother on a henequen farm in Mexico. He did everything he could to help Koreans in Cuba protect their national identity.
He established a Korean school and taught the Korean language and culture to second-generation Korean-Cubans. Lim Cheon-taek also raised funds for the Korean interim government based in Shanghai, China. His final wish was to visit his homeland before death, but he only returned to Korea seven years after he passed away.
He was buried at the National Cemetery in recognition of his contributions to Korea's independence, and now his granddaughter is pursuing her dreams by studying in Korea.
What does Korea look like in the eyes of an independence activist's descendant? Join us to learn more about the dreams and aspirations of this young woman in a foreign country and the traces of Korea's independence movement
South Korea marks 68th anniversary of Korean War
한국전쟁 발발 68주년
Today, June 25th, marks SIXTY EIGHT years since the start of the Korean War.
The conflict left more than two-million civilians dead or wounded.... and a country divided.
Taking a look back at the war on this anniversary is our Ko Roon-hee.
After Japan's defeat in World War II, the Korean Peninsula was liberated from colonial rule.
But that didn't mean a free and independent Korean state.
The Soviet Union occupied the north of the country and the U.S. took the south,... dividing Korea along the 38th parallel.
In 1948, the South and North formed governments that were ideologically opposed, and each rejected the legitimacy of the other.
On June 25th, 1950, the North Korean army invaded South Korea with Soviet tanks, marking the start of the Korean War.
A few months later, the North had conquered nearly all of the South, including its capital, Seoul.
To South Korea's defense came the United Nations, with the United States as the principal force.
This is because they saw in the North's attack the growing threat of communism.
In September 1950, General Douglas MacArthur, Commander in Chief of UN Forces, successfully carried out the Incheon Landing Operation… recapturing Seoul in two weeks.
But without warning, communist China sent in massive numbers of troops to help North Korea.
The fighting finally came to an end with an armistice agreement in July 1953,... and the two Koreas remain separated to this day.
Estimates vary, but a report by South Korea's defense ministry suggests the conflict resulted in the deaths of more than 130-thousand South Korean troops, and nearly 38-thousand fighting under UN Command, the vast majority of them Americans.
Earlier this month, South Korean President Moon Jae-in spoke at a ceremony for the country's 63rd Memorial Day, and laid out the government's plan to honor those soldiers and their sacrifices.
The Republic of Korea will excavate the remains of every single soldier and police officer who died during the Korean War. If inter-Korean relations improve, we will first and foremost work on the recovery of remains in the Demilitarized Zone.
For the anniversary of the start of the war, today, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is holding a ceremony... to honor those who defended the Republic of Korea.
Around a thousand South Korean veterans and around a hundred UN veterans are expected to be attending.

EXHIBITION ON PAST KOREAN IMMIGRANTS / KBS뉴스(News)
[Anchor Lead]
More than a century ago, Mexico was the second country of choice after Hawaii among Koreans emigrating overseas. A special exhibition has opened in Incheon to shed light on the difficult lives of Koreans who worked at henequen farms in Mexico and the meaning of the independence movement against Japanese colonial rule.
[Pkg]
Dolores Garcia is a third-generation Korean-Mexican. She recently visited Korea in search of her ethnic roots. It's heartbreaking for her to think about her late grandfather who emigrated to Mexico at the age of 9 and never got to visit his sorely-missed home country again during his lifetime.
[Soundbite] DOLORES GARCIA(THIRD-GENERATION KOREAN-MEXICAN) : My grandfather had a hard time adapting to the local climate, which is different from that of Korea. He also struggled with the language barrier and cultural differences.
More than a thousand Koreans including Garcia's grandfather boarded a ship in 1905 to emigrate to Mexico. They crossed the Pacific Ocean to pursue their Mexican dream, but their life of hard toil on henequen farms was nothing less than slavery. Some 280 of the Koreans who arrived in Mexico at the time were relocated to sugarcane farms in Cuba, but their situation was just as dire. But even in the face of adversity, the Korean migrants set up their own association and established a school to protect their national identity. Furthermore, they saved their earnings to fund the anti-Japanese movement in their homeland. In 1917, independence activist Ahn Chang-ho visited Mexico to encourage the migrants.
[Soundbite] SHIN EUN-MI(MUSEUM OF KOREA EMIGRATION HISTORY) : We wanted to draw public attention to the migrants who saved their earnings working on henequen farms to help the independence movement.
Currently, some 30,000 third- and fourth-generation Koreans reside in Mexico. Promoting exchanges and raising awareness on the 110-year history of Koreans' migration to Mexico is essential.

Arirang Prime Ep244 Unfinished Diaspora
Outlander : Unfinished Diaspora
This year marks the 150th anniversary of Koreans′ emigration to Russia. How did these Koreans end up living in a foreign country despite the language barrier? A third generation Korean Russian Park Alex retraces the route of Korean Russian diaspora from Tashkent, Uzbekistan to Primorsky Krai in Russia. Through this journey, we listen to the stories of Korean Russians′ unfinished diaspora as well as the hardships they had to endure.
Korean Russians overcome adversities and succeed
Korean Russians were deported to Central Asia from Primorsky Krai in 1937, and it was only after Stalin′s death that their talents were recognized. Park Ivan, the president of Korean Scientific and Engineering Society of Kazakhstan, reveals how Korean Russians came to be acknowledged. Furthermore, stories of jazz musician Khan Yakov, movie director Song Rabrenzi, and independence activist Han Seong-geol illustrate how Korean Russians of Central Asia have been continuing their Korean ethnicity and history.
Settling down after deportation
Korean Russians who moved to Primorsky Krai in 1863 to escape Korea′s famine were deported to a barren region in 1937. However, instead of getting discouraged, they built a canal and cultivated the land to survive. Their resilient diligence brought them and their farms much recognition. The Kim Byung Hwa Museum outlines the efforts of Korean-Russian deportees to settle down in their new environment. We also look at how Korean Russians were branded as a hostile minority and the discrimination they faced.
Korean Russians′ life after the collapse of the Soviet Union
In 1991, just as Korean Russians were beginning to adapt to their new lives in Central Asia, the Soviet Union collapsed. Korean Russians were forced to leave and find a new course of life yet again as they could no longer use their Russian language in the newly independent republics. Choi Yekazerina, who moved to Primorsky Krai 10 years ago, talks about the difficult times her people went through.
Even now, countless Korean Russians in Central Asia are faced with the harsh reality of having to leave their homelands to make a leaving. Outlanders: Unfinished Diaspora shows their history of emigration and examines how these wanderers have been preserving their Korean ethnicity despite being unable to find a place to call their home.

2,500 cruise tourists from Taiwan visit Korea's Busan on Tuesday
사드보복으로 인해 비바람 맞고있는 크루즈 산업,... 시장 다변화를 위한 노력
The nation's cruise sectors was one of the hardest hit industries when China imposed a ban on group tour to Korea.
But Korea has been coming up with measures to lessen dependency on Chinese visitors,... and its efforts are bearing fruits.
Lee Ji-won provides a closer look.
A cruise carrying some 25-hundred tourists arrived in Korea's southern port city of Busan early Tuesday morning.
Having departed from Taiwan on Sunday,... Sapphire Princess made a one day-stop in Korea as part of a seven day trip around East Asia.
Unlike last year, when there was only one cruise coming from Taiwan, Tuesday's trip is the fourth time that a cruise from Taiwan has docked at the port city this year,... carrying some 95-hundred tourists to Busan.
The majority of Korea's cruise tourists used to come from China,... which accounted for over 90 percent of the nearly two-million cruise tourists visiting Korea last year.
But with Beijing banning group tours to Korea in March in retaliation for Seoul's deployment of the THAAD missile defense system, Korea's cruise industry has been hard hit,... seeing a more than 90-percent on-year fall in cruise tourists in May and June.
Since the ban,... Korea's tourism industry, including Busan Port Authority, has been active in trying to diversify its tourists,… and Taiwan is one promising market. Port authorities expect the number of Taiwanese cruise tourists to jump from 250-thousand last year, to well over 300-thousand this year.
With limited time to explore the city, many cruise tourists opt for a one-day tour to see Busan's famous sites.
(Stndp)
”One of the stops on the tour is the BIFF square. Every year, the city hosts the world-renowned Busan International Film Festival,... and in this area tourists can enjoy the history of Korean films while tucking in to some local street foods.”
From spicy rice-cakes,... to Busan's famous sweet pancakes, Hodduk,… there's plenty of Korean snacks to taste. And on the streets are hand prints of famous movie directors and stars,... as well as posters of some of the country's most well-known movies.

A museum that shows us a glimpse of what life was like in Seoul several centuries ago has opened in the South Korean capital.
Our Lee Min-sun went to check it out.
Take a look. 600 years of history were uncovered in the heart of Seoul on Wednesday.
The Gongpyeong Historic Sites Museum displays remains and dwelling sites from the Joseon Dynasty in a newly built 26-story building in Jongno-gu district.
With more than 3,800 square meters of floor area, it’s the city's largest museum that preserves relics and dwelling sites at the very places where they were discovered.
More than two hundred everyday items from the past are preserved here. You can see the sites of 16th and 17th century buildings and alleys by walking along the transparent glass floors.
Must-see displays are the remains of three different types of Joseon Dynasty homes. Visitors can see what's left of the old houses... and compare them to life-size reproductions.
Virtual reality gear lets you explore even more of the inside of the old-time houses of Seoul.
Dozens of porcelain dishes with personal marks indicating who owns them hint at how people used to borrow dishes from their neighbors for parties or big family events.
“It’s really cool that I can see these relics in the middle of the city.”
It's first building project in the city in which the relics found at the construction site were preserved right where they were found.
The building's private developer was allowed to put 4 extra stories on it in exchange for preserving the original site and turning the basement floor into a museum that’s open to the public for free.
“Previously, when relics were found on building sites, only some them were preserved, and at a separate site. But this time, the whole thing was preserved after close consultation with the developer. We've called this the ‘Gongpyeong-dong rule’.”
The city of Seoul plans to make Gongpyeong-dong a blueprint for managing age-old cultural properties discovered in the future during urban development.
