It's winter time in Ojai and what is that noise your hearing late in the evening and early mornings? Is it helicopters circling your house? I left my cozy warm house in the early morning to find out where all the noise is coming from. Learn a little about Ojai before you complain about the racket.

* I put Emily on the spot and after we recorded she wanted to elaborate on science part, that she didn't get time to state clearly in the video. So here it is, and it's very interesting! Water gives off one calorie of heat per gram (= 1 ml. by volume) for every drop of 1 degree in temperature on the Celsius scale. Thus water at, say, 16 degrees (= 60 Fahrenheit) will give of 16 calories in reaching 0 Celsius. When water freezes it gives off an additional 80 calories in changing from a liquid to a solid. This heat of fusion is what makes liquid water so valuable in keeping the orchard warm. As long as there’s liquid water around, where that water is can’t drop below freezing without giving off those calories. Dissolved solids in the water (or plant juices) shift things a bit as does whatever coverings are around the liquid water, but it still remains that those 80 calories have to be given up as heat to change a gram of water to ice. - Emily

* Our mission is to strengthen disaster response in America by recruiting rescued dogs and partnering them with firefighters and other first responders to find people buried alive in the wreckage of disasters.
* We offer the professionally trained canines and an ongoing training program at no cost to fire departments.
* And we ensure lifetime care for every dog in our program: once rescued, these dogs never need to be rescued again.
* There are currently 74 SDF-trained Search Teams located in California, Florida, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah.
* Thanks to Mutual Aid Agreements between counties, cities and states, these precious, life-saving resources can be shared regionally and nationally.
