Flat Rock Trail Hike - 1-27-2013
My Son and I decided to try a short day hike in the snow this past Sunday. We drove to Colonel Denning State Park and hiked the Flat Rock Trail to an outstanding overlook on the top of the mountain that overlooks Cumberland Valley. The Flat Rock Trail joins up with the Tuscarora Trail for a short distance and as a result the Wagon Wheel Shelter provides a great place to stop for lunch.

Rock City: I Can See Seven States, then Nashville - Traveling Robert
Great American Road Trip 2016 Part 2
On this week's video we visit a famous roadside attraction near Chattanooga, Tennessee called Rock City. Rock city is located on the Georgia side of the border, on top of the Lookout Mountain Ridge.
Rock City became a tourist attraction back in the early 1930s, at the site of a community called Fairyland, founded by one Garnet Carter and his wife Frieda. These rock formations happened to be inside the Fairyland community, and it was Frieda’s idea to develop this part of the property into a great rock garden, with all kinds of plants, trails around the rocks, and statues of gnomes and other fairytale characters imported from Germany. They claim that you can see seven states from the top of the mountain: Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. While on a clear day you can see the Smoky Mountains, that's still the Tennessee side. I don't have hard evidence of this but I have read that Kentucky, Virginia, and South Carolina are below the horizon, so the only way you could see them is if the Earth was flat.
In Rock City we also enjoy the music of Matt Downer - Old Time Traveler, an Alabama native and Chattanooga resident. He plays the fiddle, the banjo, and the guitar, and he has dedicated his career to the preservation of traditional music. He has studied the repertoire and techniques of many of the elder Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia musicians, so he is the real deal. What a treat it is to listen to his music.
As we continue towards Nashville we run into some trouble climbing the Cumberland Plateau , also known Monteagle Mountain. The car started overheating on the long 5% grade. While technically not a mountain, Monteagle got it's popular culture name due to a Johnny Cash song describing this treacherous portion of the road.

BHTV: Explore the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, NC
Today we are at Connemara, the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site in Flat Rock, where this influential writer, poet, and musician lived with his family from 1945–1967. His descendants tell us that they were drawn to this area, like so many people are, for its mild climate and extraordinary beauty. Sandburg provided a popular voice for the American people of the 20th century, and fortunately for us, he still speaks to us through the beauty and serenity of Connemara in Flat Rock.
Live the Life You Choose: Fox Run Preserve in Flat Rock, NC:
Live the Life You Choose: Historic Flat Rock Village, Henderson County, NC:
Live the Life You Choose: Historic Living in WNC:
“Carl Sandburg was known for several things in the literary world. He was a poet, he was a social commentator, he was a biographer of Abraham Lincoln. When he wrote, he didn't use anything that was esoteric. Everything, all of his vocabulary, was just sort of ordinary, common sense, everyman's kind of vocabulary. That's just the way he was. He would never have thought of shutting himself out from other people. He was just trying to use ordinary words to express some really deep-seated philosophical principles about his life, about life in general, about the United States, about the history of this country. And that was just his way of doing it—simplicity and not exclusivity.”
“The Sandburgs, when they moved here after the Second World War, began what was really a very, seeming to us at least, to be a very ideal life. They had lots of space, they had fresh air, it was quiet back here. They had, at that time, 245 acres of land, much of it being the Big Glassy Mountain and where the trails and all are now.”
“Mr. Sandburg stayed in the house, stayed up all night, wrote, thought, researched. Mrs. Sandburg probably went to bed at shortly after sunset, got up early in the morning, and came down here to the goat barnyard where we're standing right now, and she began her work with the goats. She was a founding member of the American Dairy Goat Association. She did pioneering things in goat genetics and goat husbandry that nobody else in the country had done at the time, and she was extremely successful. Her goats won all kinds of awards. They still do—all of the goats that we have here are direct descendants from Mrs. Sandburg's line, and if anybody doubts that, there are all of Mrs. Sandburg's records in the house, all on little index cards. And if you were a real doubting Thomas you could just trace back the lineage of all of these goats here back to her time.”
“There are a number of things that make this a unique place. Certainly the house is not to be missed. The house looks as if the Sandburgs packed their suitcases and left about 10:30 this morning after they'd washed the breakfast dishes. It's been absolutely untouched, untampered with, unimproved. It's not been glamorized in any way. You see the entire house, you'll see his bedroom with his old orange crate and the typewriter where he stayed up all night typing. And the house shows just how simply they lived. There was nothing pretentious about it. It's a magnificent collection, tribute to Mr. Sandburg.”
“And then, of course, the sundry trails that are definitely not to be missed. And spend as much time as you can possibly afford bonding with the goats. You will have had a wonderful time at Connemara.”

Vlog 37
This is from our trip to Blowing Rock and Boone, North Carolina! NC is one of our favorite states of the ones we've visited so far. We were able to bring Boo along on this road trip and stayed at a pet friendly place. Here we visit Apple Hill Farm, where they take care of alpacas and llamas, along with many other farm animals. We also went on some short but scenic hikes in the area.
Our second vlog from this trip will be coming soon. In the next one, we will be going on the scariest hike we've ever been on!
