Robert-Houdin automata 'La Leçon de Chant' ~ Musée Paul Dupuy, Toulouse
'La Leçon de Chant', an automaton figure signed Robert Houdin in Paris. Made in 1844, it is just one of a number of important items of horology and its associated arts to be found in the Gelis collection, housed at the Musée Paul Dupuy in Toulouse.
Measuring 77 x 69 x 45 cms, this automata depicts a noblewoman and her attendant in the exercise of teaching a song bird to sing by means of a 'serinette', this being a small hand cranked barrel organ with a small number of pipes, designed to imitate bird song.
The bird sings a tune, then the serinette is played, the bird then repeats the song and the figures nod in approval. But then the bird deviates somewhat from its instruction, the figures shake their heads and the bird returns to the correct song which again meets their approval and they nod.
Gelis acquired this automata in the 1920's, from the widow of Robert-Houdin's son. This probably accounts for its survival in remarkable condition. Other notable and important clocks and watches to be found at this museum include a remarkable astronomical clock in gilt metal case by Isaac Habrecht dated 1578, and a superb and very early pendulum clock C.1665 by Isaac Thuret, also in a gilt metal case.

The story of our Pugio/DuPui/Puig family in the Middle Ages.
On my father's side, we are a branch of the French DuPui/DuPuy family of Italian origins We originally were the Del Poggios, from Lucca, and Lucchese in Italy, which branched out into the DuPui/DuPuy family of France, and later, our branch of the Puig family of Catalunya in northern Spain.
In Avenione, in Paris, and in other parts of France, are living the Del Poggios, called there Dupuy, who, not to lose their Italian privileges, claim to swear allegiance through their attorneys, since they held fiefs and lordships in Tuscany. Several papers still extant certify that the Del Poggios were Dukes and Marquises as far back as the 10th century. A Poggio was Bishop of St. Miniato in A.D. 1038. In Latin the name was de Podio.^ Raphael de Podio was the father of Hughes DuPuy, who founded the Abbey D'Arguebelle, order of St. Bernard, in the diocese of St. Paul, in the eleventh century.
It is quite significant that the chief of the battalion of the forty-eighth French Regiment of the line, who is the author of several military works of note in the nineteenth century, is named de Podio DuPuy. This seems to confirm the suggestion that de Podio is likely to have been a family surname. Whether the name was de Podio, Del Poggio, or DuPuy, each represents a word of the same meaning in its different language.
Hughes Dupuy, son of Raphael de Podio (called also Guigues or Guelfes, Wido and Wilfo), married a daughter of Edward de Poisieu and was the father of four children, the youngest of whom was Raymond DuPui, who will always be remembered as the most illustrious Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. Hughes Dupuy took up the cross in 1096, and embarked for Palestine with his wife and four children. He was one of the principal captains of the Crusaders with Godefroy de Bouillon, and is mentioned by Albert D'Aix for his many exploits and deeds of bravery. His arms are still preserved among the relics and curiosities in the Museum of the Crusades in the Palace of Versailles. For his services he was granted Souverainete la ville d'Acre. *
However distinguished may have been the early members of the family, history universally acknowledges that Raymond Dupuy added to it imperishable laurels, which will remain fresh and green so long as history survives. We will pass over, for the present, the other sons of Hughes DuPui, who won honorable names as soldiers before the walls of Jerusalem. Their lives were overshadowed by the splendor of the genius and by the achievements of their brother Raymond.
Like many useful charities of the present day, the Order of St. John of Jerusalem grew from very small beginnings. In 1048 a few merchants from Amalfi were permitted to build a chapel near the Holy Sepulchre and to connect it with two hospitals, the one for men and the other for women. The superintendents of these hospitals were designated Knights Hospitallers. They connected the two hospitals with the chapel, and were famed as much for their religious enthusiasm as they were for their beneficence. At the capture of Jerusalem in 1099, they displayed such heroic virtues as to attract the admiration of Raymond DuPui and many other brave men who fought with them and who joined the order, and ever after were known as the Servants of the poor and of Christ, a title of which they were justly proud.
In 1118, at the death of Gerard de Martigue, founder of the order, Raymond DuPui was elected to the office of First Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, into which organization the Knights Hospitallers were merged.^
In addition to ministrations to the poor and to the sick, the Order now charged itself with the defence of Christian pilgrims and of the Holy Sepulchre against hostile infidels. The successful achievements of this Order in succeeding centuries were recognized as due to its discipline and constitution. Raymond DuPui divided the Order into three classes according to their respective attainments and adaptabilities. They were either soldiers, priests, or servants. All were recognized to be upon an equality in usefulness, but each division was subordinate to a wise constitutional government. This was the life-work of the First Grand Master, and through the influence of the Order, the after political complexion of the world was largely moulded.
Raymond DuPui was born in Dauphine, France, in 1080, and died in Palestine in 1160, at a ripe old age, after rounding out a life full of activity, usefulness, and honors. His portrait hangs in the Museum of Versailles.
Another important of our Puig ancestors includes Riperto de Puig Guigone, who was the Grands-Maîtres or Templar Gran Master of the kingdom of Aragon, and part of Provence France in the year 1224.
