Finland's capital prepares for summit between Putin and Trump
(14 Jul 2018) Security has been heightened in Helsinki ahead of a summit on Monday between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The office of Finnish President Sauli Niinisto has confirmed the high-stakes face-to-face meeting will be held at a 19th century Presidential Palace that overlooks the Baltic Sea.
Putin and Trump have met twice before on the sidelines of international meetings but the Helsinki summit will be their first official stand-alone meeting.
US President George H.W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev held talks at the same venue in 1990.
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are scheduled to start the day with Niinisto and his spouse, Jenni Haukio, for breakfast at Mantyniemi, another presidential residence in Helsinki where the couple lives most of the time.
Niinisto also will hold a bilateral meeting with Putin.
Finland, a Nordic nation of 5.5 million people, has a long legacy of hosting US-Soviet and US-Russian summits due to its geographic location and perceived neutrality.
The last time a summit brought presidential entourages from Moscow and Washington to Helsinki was in March 1997, when US President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin held talks on arms control and NATO expansion.

President Urho Kekkonen`s Museum Tamminiemi, Helsinki
Tamminiemi Villa is located in Meilahti adjacent to Seurasaari museum island on a beautiful park estate which used to be President Urho Kekkonen's official residence during his period in office between 1956 and 1981. In those days it was known as the centre of Finland's political and governmental life. Tamminiemi is furnished the way it was in Kekkonen's time.

Päätoimittaja Amos Andersonin 1940 valtiolle lahjoittama Tamminiemen huvila on ollut kolmen presidentin, Risto Rytin (1940-1944), Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheimin (1944-1946) ja Urho Kekkosen (1956-1981) virka-asunto ja monien poliittisten neuvottelujen ja ratkaisujen näyttämö. Erityisesti presidentti Urho Kekkosen 25-vuotisen virkakauden aikana nimestä Tamminiemi muodostui suorastaan käsite Suomen poliittisessa elämässä ja kielenkäytössä. Presidentti Kekkosen kuoleman jälkeen Tamminiemi avattiin museona joulukuussa 1987.

FINLAND: PRESIDENT CLINTON & PRESIDENT YELTSIN END HELSINKI SUMMIT
Russian/Eng/Nat
US President Bill Clinton and his Russian counterpart Boris Yeltsin ended their talks in Helsinki Friday and officials said they had gone well.
Earlier Russian negotiators ruled out a document on the eastward expansion of NATO being signed at the summit.
But they are promising a general statement on European security.
The residence of the Finnish president - Mantyniemi - is centre stage for day two of the summit.
President Martti Ahtisaari greeted Bill Clinton outside despite the mercury reaching 8 degrees Centigrade below zero.
Although there was a chill in the air Boris Yeltsin didn't think there would be a cooling of relations between the two presidents.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I think that both sides are prepared to meet each other so that there's a means to a compromise and to solve the problems that exist and those disagreements between our position and that of the Americans.
SUPER CAPTION: Boris Yeltsin, Russian President
Inside the residence, which once played host to Russian czars, the media crowded round for a glimpse of the two men who hold the future of European security in their hands.
During the lunch break the American side summed up the first session.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Several (people), familiar with the meetings that the presidents have described this as by far the most substantive and intense they've ever had. And I think that is befitting the subject matter they're talking about, this relationship both these countries have to the continent of Europe as we think ahead to the 21st century.
SUPER CAPTION: Mike McCurry, White House spokesman
The Russians too believed that progress had been made.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I have the impression that during these last two hours the presidents not only put forward their positions but they did more, they moved forward and came closer together on their positions during the meeting. SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Yastrzhembsky, Yeltsin's spokesman
But Yastrzhembsky was very clear that no formal communiqué would be issued on Russia's future dealings with NATO.
SOUNDBITE (English)
It will not be any special document or statement or declaration about NATO-Russian relationships. It will be a general statement about the European security.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Yastrzhembsky, Yeltsin's spokesman
The two presidents are scheduled to hold a news conference later Friday (1645 GMT).
