Pushkinskaya 10. St. Petersburg - The Art of Survival
A documentary trip through St. Petersburg, through artists' studios and flats, to the datcha and to parties, along transport routes and public places. The film portraits artistic personalities living in the cultural center Pushkinskaya 10 which exists since the late 1980s and accompanies them during their cultural activities and everyday lives.
In about 15 sequences not only the history of Pushkinskaya 10 is being told, but you are also taken on a trip through St. Petersburg and its surroundings. The main question of the film is: how can I survive in Russia as an artist? The art of survival with little financial means and the art of improvisation to survive are central topics of the film. The artists have unorthodox thoughts about the Russian way of life, we meet Russian elephants, demons, superstition and rumours, see pictures of local patriotism, learn about the art of driving a car in St. Petersburg... and, of course, Russian drinking rituals.
A film by Hermann Peseckas, Austria 2001, 93 min, English, Russian with English subtitles
Script: Hermann Peseckas, Franz Kumpl, Nikolay Medvedev

Pushkinskaya 10 Art Center
When I first read about the Pushkinskaya 10 Art Center, I was instantly intrigued. However, it is located down this little alley, and I was intimidated to go in - thinking maybe it was private. But, the gate was open, so I worked up the courage to go inside.

ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA
A city was founded by Tsar Peter the Great along the Neva River on May 27, 1703 and named it Saint Petersburg after St. Peter, the Apostle. He established this city to rival the great cities of Europe, such as Rome, Venice, Versailles, etc.
Several cathedrals and churches were built and the most famous is the St. Isaac Cathedral with its golden dome which dominates the city’s skyline. The other famous church is the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood which was built on the spot to commemorate the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881.
Several palaces in Baroque and neoclassical architecture, the most famous is the Peterhof Palace with its fountains and gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were built by Peter the Great to rival Versailles Palace in France.
The other well known palace belongs to the wealthy Yusupov family, known for their art collections and philanthropy. The Yusupov Palace, also known as Moika Palace, was the site of the assassination of Rasputin in 1916.
There are several art galleries and museums in St. Petersburg, the most famous is the State Hermitage Museum which is housed in the former Winter Palace and 5 other buildings. It is the second largest museum in the world, after the Louvre, with over 3 million exhibits including the world's largest collection of paintings by Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Rafael, El Greco, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Pissarro, Picasso, Gainsborough, Titian, etc.
As a result from all the planning of Tsar Peter the Great, the Sts. Peter and Paul Fortress and Cathedral was constructed that would serve as the final resting place for the Russian Imperial family from Tsar Peter the Great to Tsar Nicolas II.
At the start of WW1, the city was renamed Petrogad, also Leningrad in 1924 and back to
St. Petersburg in 1991.
As for today, St. Petersburg will remain an architectural, historical and cultural European city in the Baltic that would fascinate the millions of tourists that visit the country every year.
