'Wheels and Traces' Interviews | Cycling event hosted by TEDxNicosia
TEDxNicosia hosted a distinctive cycling event ‘Wheels and Traces’ which followed the historic traces of the capital city on April 23, 2016. The event, was under the auspices of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Cyprus, was organised in collaboration with the Cyprus Cycling Federation and with the generous support of the Nicosia Municipality.
With the power of TEDxNicosia ‘ideas worth spreading’, the Municipality’s love of the city and the Cycling Federation’s passion for cycling, Nicosia’s history, culture and nostalgic splendour was explored on wheels making it a fantastic opportunity to cycle through history while being fully present in the moment.
What’s more, ‘Wheels and Traces’ fell under a series of events, organised by the Cyprus Department of Antiquities for the International Day for Monuments and Sites. This year’s international theme ‘The Heritage of Sport’ couldn’t be more befitting.
The event was within the framework of the Netherlands EU Presidency, which features a Cycling Festival around Europe. As a cycling nation with more bicycles (22,5 million) than people (17 million) and with the cycling culture in its DNA, the Netherlands is offering a Cycling Festival to Europe (cyclingfestivaleurope.eu), providing a stage to the growing cycling culture in European cities and countries.
The 10km tour began at the Nicosia Municipality. With a little help from the Vice President of the Cyprus Cycling Federation, George Apostolou, cyclists traced numerous ‘X’ sites which unveiled historical landmarks, not often frequented by passers-by. What’s more, vintage bikes joined along and their owners shared their stories about cycling once upon the older days.
‘Ideas worth spreading’ are the 'traces | ίχνη’ that TEDXNicosia has been creating since 2011. They are TEDxNicosia’s contribution to the local community, the traces which people can look back upon and also look ahead at. Simply put, traces left by footprints (or, in this case, wheel prints) are the summation of a journey.

Elite Men Road Race LIVE - 2013 UCI Road World Championships
Road cycling began as an organised Sport in 1868. The first World Championships were held in 1893 and it has been a part of the Olympics in the whole of the modern era. Road Cycling has 2 main types of competition -- the Road Race and the Time Trial.
In a Road Race, the riders start together in a bunch. The courses are of varying distances (approx. 260 km for Elite Men and 140km for Elite Women in the UCI World Championships).
Road Races have several different formats. They can be held on a circuit in which riders race over numerous laps like in the UCI Road World Championships; over one-day from one point to another like the Paris to Roubaix Race; or in Stage races in which riders race on consecutive days like the Tour de France.
In the Individual Time Trial the riders set off 1-2 minutes apart, with the reigning Champion leaving last. Without the motivation of other riders around them and the slipstream advantage of bunch riding, the time trial competitor must rely on huge mental strength to keep up the pace and cover the course in the fastest time possible. At the UCI World Championships and Olympic Games, the individual time trial is raced over 40-50 km for Elite Men and 20-30 km for Elite Women.
In a Team Time Trial the principle is the same as for the individual, but teams of between 2 and 10 riders who remain together along the course race this event. The team time trial is on the programme at the UCI Road World Championships as of 2012 (6 riders per team) and is open to UCI ProTeams, UCI Professional Continental Teams, UCI Continental Teams and UCI Women's Teams.

Ferrari crashes during sports car tour

A dramatic video has emerged showing the moment a Ferrari crashed during an exotic car tour in Canada.
The footage was captured in Halton Hills, Ontario by another driver who was behind the Ferrari F430 as the tour took them along winding country roads earlier this month.
While navigating a corner the red sports car suddenly swerves to the left and hits a guardrail causing significant damage to the car's bonnet.
The fllmer can be heard saying that's not good, that guy has to pay for that now.
No injuries were reported.

Holocaust survivor talks about being hidden in the Chateau de Chabannes
If you do not see the English subtitles click cc (red).
Holocaust survivor Charles Roman talks about being hidden in the Chateau de Chabannes children's home in France.
One of the unique phenomena of the Holocaust period was the rescue of Jewish children in France: a network of protective homes established by different organizations, both Jewish and Christian, whose members collected children and brought them to remote places, in order to protect them from persecution and enable them to live a normal life under abnormal circumstances. Thanks to this rescue endeavor, thousands of Jewish children were saved. This is a story of courage and determination, a story of sacrifice, loyalty and dedication.
The exhibition 'Children's Homes in France During the Holocaust' tells the story of three children's homes: the home in Chamonix, the home in Izieu, and the home in Chabannes. Click Here to enter:

Last of the NYC Leathermen
The Eagle NYC is the last great outpost of New York's gay leather scene. Once the hardest, burliest, most cruisinest members of the gay community here and everywhere, Leathermen's ranks were hit especially hard by AIDS in the 80s and 90s. Where the side streets of the West Village and Chelsea once swarmed with glistening, hairy chests and bulging jeans, like some neverending Tom of Finland mural, these days the scene is but a faded denim shadow of its former self.
Since finding a solid clutch of Leathermen in New York nowadays is harder than getting a leprechaun to make eye contact with you at the Central Park Ramble, we went into the Eagle, basically the Leatherman's Alamo, to meet the surviving members of this once-mighty subculture and learn the tricks of their rough trade. Please be mindful of the hanky code while watching this video, and, of course, no khakis, sneakers, or fragrances.

12 MONTHS 12 STORIES - EP9 - It's not always sunny in the movie
12 MONTHS 12 STORIES - web serie present 9th EPISODE
Summer was hot , dry and sunny... well not anymore. Heading to Austria for the overmountain challenge, the team face a hell of a week.
But even if we haven't see the sun, Ischgl's area is so amazing that we still rode all week and loved spending time in the mountain there. Racing, coaching, riding, enjoying austrian lifestyle and gastronomy offered us a nice experience.
In this Episode we also wanted to introduce you, Pauline Dieffenthaler, Team manager, communication and logistic director and athlete. She travel all year with the team, take care of us, organised everything and race amazingly fast (Standing 6th overall at the EWS and 2nd at megavalanche). On top of that she loves riding and is not scared of the winter conditions...
A big thank to her, because without Pauline half of our project couldn't exist.

EXPO – Magic of the White City (Narrated by Gene Wilder)
Narrated by Gene Wilder, EXPO – Magic of the White City brings the Chicago World’s Fair to life. Experience the world of 1893 through a cinematic visit to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.
Subscribe for more great documentaries!
Nearly 28 million people visited the Fair. Dubbed the “White City,” it inspired future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright, unveiled the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jack®, and, in many ways, marked the beginning of the 20th century. Many of the era’s greatest achievements in science, technology and culture were unveiled there. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his design of New York City’s Central Park, and constructed under the supervision of Daniel Burnham.
The Fair was an engineering marvel. On opening day, President Grover Cleveland depressed a golden telegraph key which sent the first courses of electricity throughout the Fair powering fountains, machines, electric railways and thousands of lights. It was the first use of electricity on such a massive scale.
In addition, fairgoers enjoyed the Midway Plaisance where a one-mile boulevard of fun offered camel riding and guilty pleasures such as belly dancing, street fighting and beer drinking. Against the backdrop of 1893’s troubles with workers’ rights, prejudice, discrimination and corruption, the World’s Columbian Exposition cast a brief ray of hope for the future of humanity.
Filmed in spectacular High-Definition, EXPO – Magic of the White City immerses viewers in one of the world’s biggest extravaganzas and one of the most unforgettable events in American history. There will never be another event like it… or will there?
