The Royal Yacht Britannia took the Duke 'way down South' into the Antarctica during his round-the-world cruise. Whaling is the chief industry in these parts, the Duke transferred to a whale catching vessel to inspect the ship and talk to their company about their jobs. Duke gets up to speak. GTV. Assembly applauding the Duke. CU. Duke speaking (natural sound): I find it rather difficult to realise that I have been round the world and covered nearly 40,000 miles since the 15th October last year. Now it would be quite easy to claim that this was all part of some deep laid scheme, but I am afraid I have to admit that it all came about because I was asked to start off the Olympic Games in Melbourne, where I made, if I may say so, the best speech of my life, which is exactly five words. LV. Guests applauding. SV. Duke continues (natural sound): And I for one am prepared to sacrifice a good deal if by so doing I can advance its well being by even a small degree. Prince Philip speaking: This Commonwealth of which every member is so proud came into existence because people made sacrifices and offered their service to it. Now it has been handed to us and if we don't make sacrifices for it we shall have nothing to hand onto those who come after us, and the world would have lost something of much greater value than just a grand conception. CU. Duke speaking On Saturday 16th February, four months almost to the day after I left home, the Queen flew out to Portugal and we enjoyed two days there together before paying a state visit to that country. And then followed three hectic but wonderful days when the friendliness of the Portuguese people knew no bounds (applause) and then as you know this adventure ended where it began, at London Airport with a very happy family reunion. GTV. Assembly applauding.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S TOUR OF SOUTH ATLANTIC ISLANDS AND MICHAEL PARKER RETURNED
Britannia had sailed completely round the world when she took the Duke to the remote islands of the South Atlantic. He experienced the rugged quality of its landscape, stumbling over the rocks, while local inhabitants demonstrated how easy it can be. Meanwhile after announcing his resignation as the Duke's Private Secretary, Commander Michael Parker returned home. Back to the South Atlantic, to Tristan Da Cunha where the Duke went to Edinburgh Settlement. Northwards to St. Helena - then Ascension Island - a dependency of St. Helena, which has an important cable and radio transmitting station.
