Exploring The Rocks, historical heritage area of Sydney, located at the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, neighbouring between Circular Quay and Millers Point. The Rocks area is a great place for historical urban exploration.
We take a look at the heritage listed pubs, hotels and historical buildings and walk along the cobbled laneways, haunted by the ghosts of Sydney's past. We walk around The Rocks Markets areas and into The Argyle dining and nightlife area. A climb up the Argyle Stairs with views of The Argyle Cut Bridge and over to the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where we see bridge climbers beginning their journey over the Harbour Bridge. Over to Susannah Place Terraces, haunted terraces now a museum with daily tours, then across the road on Gloucester Street, to The Big Dig, archaeological site where foundations from houses and shops dating back to 1795 and over 750,000 artefacts have been found from Australia's first European settlers .

The Rocks, Sydney
The Rocks is sandstone buildings, history, laneways, culture and Australiana by day, and a busy pub scene by night. It is the historical precinct of central Sydney immediately to the north of the City centre on the western side of Sydney Cove. The Rocks is very different in character and atmosphere from the neighbouring commercial and retail centre of Sydney.
To get to The Rocks, you have to get to the City Centre first. From there you can walk north along George St, or along Harrington St from Wynyard, or along the western shore of Circular Quay and Sydney Cove. The Rocks is best explored by foot. The area by the harbour and George St is flat and accessible. Away from the harbour there are a maze of steep laneways and streets.
The Rocks is a great place to shop for Australiana. Many shops selling Aboriginal art and crafts, Australian designed clothing, line the streets and arcades. Likely more expensive then less touristed areas.
There is a choice of restaurants and bars, and you will read good and bad reviews of most of them. The rule seems to be that you can expect to pay a premium to eat at The Rocks. They all tend to get very busy at times, and have high staff turnover, so your experiences will vary. It is difficult to go dismally wrong choosing a nice restaurant for a night out in the Rocks.
The Rocks pubs get busy most nights. It is a popular night spot for tourists and locals alike. You can walk along George St from Circular Quay and pass several popular pubs that attract a crowd. Late at night, especially on Friday and Saturday night that strip can have a vibe, or be rowdy, depending on your point of view. Away from George St the mood is quieter.
The Rocks is a busy area, with late trading, and a comfortable feeling. Late at night, the concentration of pubs can inevitably lead to some alcohol fuelled violence. The area is well patrolled by police, but some fights do occur in the pubs and on the streets. Use common sense when interacting with drunk people, and you will just be a spectator.

Taking a stroll through The Rocks in Sydney after departing our cruise ship. Then we fly to Brisbane to spend the night before going to the Australia Zoo!

Though the cruise was over, the fun didn’t end! After getting off the wonderful Ovation of the Seas, we grabbed breakfast with our friends and took a stroll through The Rocks area of Sydney. There was so much beauty and charm around every corner. After walking 11,000 steps before noon, we decide to go ahead and get to the airport to hang out and rest before flying to Brisbane, and then getting an Uber to Beerwah to spend the night before a day at the Australia Zoo! For those of you who don’t know, I’ve loved the Crocodile Hunter since I was a little girl, so I’ve always known that I’d have to visit his zoo if I was ever in Australia, so that’s what we set out to do! If you want to see that, keep an eye out for the next video. ;)

Sydney The Rocks
The Rocks is an urban locality, tourist precinct and historic area of Sydney's city centre, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour, immediately north-west of the Sydney central business district. It is immediately adjacent to Circular Quay on Sydney Cove, the site of Australia's first European settlement in 1788.
The Rocks became established shortly after the colony's formation in 1788. The original buildings were made mostly of local sandstone, from which the area derives its name. From the earliest history of the settlement, the area had a reputation as a slum, often frequented by visiting sailors and prostitutes. During the late nineteenth century, the area was dominated by a gang known as the Rocks Push. It maintained this rough reputation until approximately the 1870s.[4]
By the early 20th century, many of the area's historic buildings were in serious decay. In 1900, bubonic plague broke out, and the state government resumed areas around The Rocks and Darling Harbour, with the intention of demolishing them and rebuilding them. More than 3800 houses, buildings and wharves were inspected and hundreds demolished, but the continuation of these plans were brought to a halt due to the outbreak of World War I.[5] During the 1920s, several hundred buildings were demolished during the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. However, the outbreak of World War II once again stalled many of the redevelopment plans, and it was not until the 1960s that serious attempts to demolish much of the area were revived.

In 1968, the state government gave control of The Rocks to the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority, with the intention of demolishing all the original buildings, re-developing them as high-density residential dwellings. In February 1971, a group of local residents formed the Rocks Residents Group to oppose the plans. They felt that the new dwellings would result in increased rents, which would force out the traditional residents of the area. The residents' group requested a green ban from the Builder's Labourers Federation, who had become increasingly active in preventing controversial developments over the previous four years.

By 1973, the union had imposed the ban, and after discussions with the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority, a 'People's Plan' was developed. By October 1973, it appeared that the redevelopment would proceed as originally planned, using non-union labour. For two weeks, demonstrations by local residents and unionists followed, with numerous arrests being made. Liberal Premier Robert Askin was in the midst of an election campaign, and used the protests as a means of conveying his law and order message to voters. However, the green ban stayed in place until 1975, when the state union leadership was overthrown, and was ultimately successful, as can be seen in the buildings that survive today. Instead of demolishing The Rocks, renovations transformed the area into a commercial and tourist precinct.
Today the Rocks is a partly gentrified area, but still contains a significant proportion of Housing Commission properties, and there is still a significant problem of urban poverty and street crime in this district. As housing stock becomes dilapidated, government policy is to sell the now extremely valuable public housing units to private owners, in the expectation that they will restore the properties. The Sirius building and the associated Save Our Sirius protest group was formed to protest relocation of its residents.
