Kubota Castle (久保田城 Kubota-jō) is a Japanese castle in the city Akita, Akita Prefecture, Japan. Throughout the Edo period, Kubota Castle was home to the Satake clan, daimyō of Kubota Domain, rulers of northern Dewa Province. The castle was also known as Yadome-jō (矢留城) or Kuzune-jō (葛根城). In the official documents of the Tokugawa shogunate, the castle was called Akita-jō (秋田城), although this name is now more commonly used to refer to the Nara period fortified settlement of Akita Castle which was nearby.

Throughout the Edo period, Kubota Castle, located in the prefecture of Akita (northern Japan), was home to the Satake clan, daimyo of Kubota Domain, rulers of northern Dewa Province. Reassigned to Dewa Province from the clan's ancestral territories by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1602, Satake Yoshinobu immediately started the construction of the Kubota Castle and it is only in August 1604, two years later that the Castle and its keep was finished.
Thanks to its wealthy lands and prosperous farmers, the small city around the castle started to grow year after year and what used to be known in the past as the Kubota Castle Town is now, Akita city, the administrative center of Akita prefecture.

Fun Frolics: Akita Castle and Tazawako
Come and explore Japan with me!
In this video you can see Akita Castle (秋田城).
It was built around 733 AD by the Yamato Court. During its use it was home to many government officials, although no royalty is known to have permanently resided there. It’s the oldest castle of this kind in Japan, it even has the oldest flushing toilet in Japan!
We also visited the Akita Prefecture Gokoku Shrine(秋田県護国神社).
The second half of the video was shot at Lake Tazawa (田沢湖) which is the deepest lake in Japan. I've lost count of how many times I've been there. Enjoy!
Stay tuned for more adventures!

Tokyo’s Castle | What happened to Edo-jo?
Tokyo is the capitol of Japan but it doesn’t have a castle. This surprises many foreign visitors — Osaka has one but what happened to Tokyo?
Today, I visit the Edo (Tokyo) Castle Ruins and investigate the site where the mighty home of Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa once sat.
Where is this:
Edo Castle Ruins
The history:
Built in 1547 by Ota Dokan
Became home to the Shogun who expanded the Castle, gardens and walls / moats
Abandoned in 1868 when the Meiji Restoration was enacted
It was briefly called Tokyo Castle
A fire destroyed the castle in 1873 and since there was no use for a castle anymore, it was never rebuilt.
WWII destroyed anything that had remained except some of the walls and roads.
Will Edo Castle ever be rebuilt?
It would cost a lot of money but only time will tell. As more tourists come to Tokyo to visit, more desire to rebuild the past historical buildings and return them to their place of glory may happen. It’s prime real estate too.
