Firefighters finally put out the blaze at around 11 a.m. The fire also gutted the north and south buildings, both of which were also wooden. In all, about 4,200 square meters have been destroyed, Naha’s fire department said.

Japan's 500-year-old UNESCO World Heritage site Shuri Castle burns down
A fire tore through Japan's World Heritage-listed Shuri Castle on Thursday, reducing the main hall of the more than 500-year-old landmark to a skeleton. Mia Womersley reports
One of Japan's World Heritage sites has been destroyed by fire.
Flames tore through Shuri Castle on Thursday (October 31), reducing the main hall of the over 500-year-old reconstructed landmark to a mere skeleton.
Firefighters on the southern island of Okinawa received the first call around 2:47 a.m, public broadcaster NHK said.
Local media quoted the city's mayor confirming that the castle's dragon monuments had been blackened and said the north and south halls had been destroyed.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary spoke at a press conference.
I know Shuri Castle, a World Heritage site, is an extremely important symbol of Okinawa. I feel my heart ache and extend my heartfelt sympathy to the people of Okinawa.
The wooden castle, painted bright red and enclosed by curved stone walls, sits on a hill overlooking Naha.
It was due to be a scheduled stop on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic torch relay route.
The city's fire department said that while the castle had exterior sprinkler systems, its halls did not - as this wasn't required under local fire codes.
Shuri Castle has been destroyed by fire several times, most recently in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.
After World War 2, it served as a university campus until the mid 1970s.
Once restored, it re-opened as a national park in 1992 and was designated a World Heritage site in the year 2000.

Fire at Shuri Castle, a world heritage site
A fire is raging at Shuri Castle, a UNESCO's World Heritage site in the southern prefecture of Okinawa. It started early Thursday morning. Fire trucks have rushed to the scene.
The Naha city fire department says it received an emergency call reporting a fire at the castle at about 2:40 a.m. Japan time.
Police say the main hall and a nearby building have burned to the ground, and another building is burning.
No reports of injury have been reported so far.
The castle, built about 500 years ago by the Ryukyu Dynasty, was designated Japan's national treasure in 1933.
It burnt to the ground during World War Two.
The main hall was restored in 1992, and served as the venue of a banquet for leaders attending the Group of Eight summit.
Remnants of the original castle have also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, alongside ruins of other castles of the Ryukyu Kingdom in Okinawa.

Shuri Castle, a symbol of Okinawa, destroyed in fire
The main building of Shuri Castle, a symbol of Okinawa Prefecture and popular tourist attraction in the city of Naha, was destroyed in a fire early Thursday morning, authorities said. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
There were no reports of injuries, police and fire officials said, but nearby residents were told to evacuate.
As of 9 a.m., firefighters were still battling the blaze, which also burned down the north and south buildings. All three were wooden structures. In total, about 4,200 square meters have been destroyed, the city of Naha’s fire department said. More than 10 fire engines have been dispatched. Fire officials said it is highly likely that the fire started in the main building.
The castle long served as the heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled the island prefecture from 1429 to 1879, but was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in the closing days of World War II. The structures were reconstructed in 1992, and the castle ruins were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.

Shuri Castle, a 14th century World Heritage site in Okinawa, has been ravaged by the blaze, which was still burning early this morning. A popular tourist attraction, the wooden structure was constructed as the royal castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Dramatic pictures show flames tearing through the complex, which was in the middle of its annual mid-autumn festival. It had been scheduled to be included as a stop on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic torch relay route. Emergency responders received the first call about the fire at around 2:47am (5.47pm GMT), public broadcaster NHK said. According to Mail Online, Ryo Kochi, a spokesman with the Okinawa prefectural police, said: The cause of the fire has not been determined yet but a security company alarm went off at around 2.30am in the morning. Located on a hilltop overlooking the city of Naha and enclosed by curved stone walls, the castle and its surrounding structures were painted a vivid red, and recognisable by their sloped tiled roofs. It has been destroyed and rebuilt after many fires - most recently in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The Japanese dug in around the castle and mounted a fierce defence against US troops. After World War II, the castle served as a campus for Okinawa's largest public university until the mid 1970s. Following a restoration, the castle re-opened as a national park in 1992. It was designated a World Heritage site in 2000. In addition to the main hall, the north and south halls have been destroyed, NHK said. No-one has been injured, reports say.

Complete Guide to Visiting the Beautiful Islands of Okinawa Japan|Day 106-109 - Okinawa
Okinawa (沖縄県, Okinawa-ken) is Japan's southernmost prefecture, consisting of a few dozen, small islands in the southern half of the Nansei Shoto, the island chain which stretches over about one thousand kilometers from Kyushu to Taiwan. Okinawa Prefecture can be divided into three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto) around Okinawa Island (Okinawa Honto), the Miyako Islands (Miyako Retto) around Miyako Island and the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Retto) around Ishigaki Island. Okinawa's climate is subtropical, with temperatures barely falling below 15 degrees in winter. The seas surrounding Okinawa's islands are considered among the world's most beautiful with coral reefs and abundant marine wildlife. Consequently, snorkeling and scuba diving are among Okinawa's top attractions.
The islands making up Okinawa Prefecture, are also known as the Ryukyu Islands, named after the native culture, which is distinctly different from that of the rest of Japan in terms of language, cuisine, arts, etc.
