Las Vegas, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts
The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, opened on March 10 2012, is a five-acre performing arts center consisting of three theaters in two buildings.
The Smith Center is the home of the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theatre.
Prior to The Smith Center opening, Las Vegas was one of the largest cities in the country without a performing arts center.
The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation made a donation of $150 million in 2005, the second largest donation to performing arts in United States history. The building was named after Fred and Mary Smith, the chairman of the Reynolds Foundation and his wife, as the largest benefactors.
The Lied Discovery Children's Museum also resides in the Smith Center.
The building is a reinterpretation of the Nebraska State Capitol at Lincoln and the Bullocks Wilshire in Los Angeles. White Indiana limestone for the facade (as at Lincoln), as well as numerous detail elements based on the Hoover Dam and 1920's motifs, feature throughout the facility, including a winged sculpture in the Center lobby modeled after the dam's famous Winged Figures of the Republic statues.
At the corner is a 17-story tower featuring 47 bells and providing a new focal point for the downtown skyline, as well as the Center.

Smith Center - Las Vegas, Nevada | One Flock and One Shepherd: God's Promises Fulfilled
This is a musical presentation in three acts, incorporating a variety of modern musical styles, relaying how the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ) began in the Philippines with one man and a little flock and has expanded rapidly around the world today. This story is told from the perspective of Ka Pablo, a pioneering minister of the Church’s overseas missions, and his grandson, Luke, after their experiences in celebrating the Church’s centennial in 2014. As they get to know each other better—while working together in preparing a project for the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s 50 years in the West celebration in 2018—Luke begins to see how God has fulfilled His promises in each generation of God’s people from the biblical times up to the present.
BROADWAY PLAY ‘ECLIPSED’ DEBUTS IN LAS VEGAS AT THE SMITH CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
EMOTIONALLY SEARING, MESMERIZING AND UNMISSABLE BROADWAY PLAY ‘ECLIPSED’
DEBUTS IN LAS VEGAS AT THE SMITH CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
– “ECLIPSED,” the colorful and fiery drama written by Danai Gurira (of The Walking Dead) & presented by Broadway in the H.O.O.D, settles in at the Troesh Theatre at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts for four intimate, powerful and captivating performances taking place November 2-4, 2018.
Danai Gurira’s gripping drama documents the story of five extraordinary women brought together by upheaval in their homeland of Liberia in 2003 and near the end of the Second Liberian Civil War. As they navigate the dangers of captivity and imagine what the future could hold, the arrival of a new girl threatens to upend their delicately balanced community.
Tony-nominated ECLIPSED tells the story of survival, hope, humor and resilience. It offers a chilling, humanizing and surprisingly funny portrait of transformation and renewal. Established in 1905, Las Vegas was incorporated as a city in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, Las Vegas was the most populous American city founded in that century (a similar distinction earned by Chicago in the 19th century). 1931 was a pivotal year for Las Vegas. At that time, Nevada legalized casino gambling and reduced residency requirements for divorce to six weeks. This year also witnessed the beginning of construction on nearby Hoover Dam. The influx of construction workers and their families helped Las Vegas avoid economic calamity during the Great Depression. The construction work was completed in 1935.
In 1941, the Las Vegas Army Air Corps Gunnery School was established. Currently known as Nellis Air Force Base, it is home to the aerobatic team called the Thunderbirds.

In 1951, nuclear weapons testing began at the Nevada Test Site, 65 miles (105 km) northwest of Las Vegas. City residents and visitors were able to witness the mushroom clouds and be exposed to the fallout until 1963 when the limited Test Ban Treaty required that nuclear tests be moved underground.
The iconic Welcome to Las Vegas sign, which was never located in the city, was created in 1959 by Betty Willis, who never copyrighted it.
During the 1960s, corporations and business powerhouses such as Howard Hughes were building and buying hotel-casino properties. Gambling was referred to as gaming, which transitioned into legitimate business.
In 1989, entrepreneur Steve Wynn changed the face of the Las Vegas gaming industry by opening up The Mirage, the Las Vegas Strip's first mega-casino resort.
The year 1995 marked the opening of the Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas' downtown area. This canopied, five-block area features 12.5 million LED lights and 550,000 watts of sound from dusk until midnight during shows held on the top of each hour.
Due to the realization of many revitalization efforts, 2012 was dubbed The Year of Downtown. Hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of projects made their debut at this time. Moving to Las Vegas? Typical Spring Day | Debbie Drummond, Vegashomepro
Considering moving to Las Vegas? Here's a typical Spring Day in Las Vegas. On March 24, 2013, Las Vegas residents got to enjoy a sunny day with a high of 69 degrees and the over night low of 41 degrees. Among options for locals to enjoy are shopping and dining in Boca Park, outdoor activities at one of the many parks, a round of golf and even a Broadway play at the Smith Center.
Transcript to the video: Las Vegas is more than a fun place to visit. It's a great place to live. Thought I'd just share a typical, laidback Sunday in March with you. Sorry, while some of our friends are still dealing with lots of cold and snow in New England and the midwest everyone here is in short sleeves.
This is at Boca Park in Summerlin. We love the vibe of the music out in front of Sambalatte which is a locally owned coffee shop. Serves great salads and sandwiches. You also have choices like the Cheesecake Factory, Gordon Birsch. You can do a little shopping or just get out and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. We opted for Grimaldi's NY Pizza, one of our favorites.
And of course, afterwards you can get rid of those calories by going out to the park and taking the dogs for a walk or getting a round of golf in. This is the Badlands Golf Course in Queensridge, just across from Boca Park.
For the perfect ending to a nice Spring Day we went to the Smith Center for the performing arts. We went to see Shrek. Notice even though the people are dressed up a little bit they're still wearing short sleeves.
If you're interested in moving to Vegas, call (702)354-6900. This is Debbie@LVHomePro.com.
