The University of Glasgow Festival of Social Sciences
Social science research is relevant to everyone. The Festival of Social Sciences brought academics into the heart of Glasgow’s East End market place, the Barras, for a day of sharing and community building centred on how research impacts the city.
Health Inequalities and The Glasgow Effect
The Glasgow Effect describes the widest differences in life expectancy in the UK, between 54 years in some areas compared to 82 years in the more affluent areas.
There are significant health inequalities in terms of mortality, physical illness, mental health and wellbeing, lifestyle behaviours associated with ill health and access to and use of health services.
What is most pronounced about health inequalities is that where you live determines your life expectancy.
The leading public health expert in the world, Professor Sir Michael Marmot, has said ...I have spent my academic career emphasising the evidence that the key determinants of health lie outside the health care system.
People seek health care when they need it. Health care is, therefore, preceded by preventative care and because location is a factor, the built environment is a key component in the fight to reduce health inequalities.
I Walked From Glasgow To London For Mental Health Awareness
Lewis McInnes walked 433 miles from Glasgow to London over 18
days to raise awareness for mental health charities. Lewis has struggled with mental health and had a challenging upbringing but he wants to show people there is help out there and that being active and talking about mental health can benefit you.

When ready, browse vacation packages to Glasgow:
Just over an hour west of Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, is the city of #Glasgow.
#Explore this city’s unique blend of style and character at George Square, the center of it all. Looming over the city’s north-east are the brooding spires of Glasgow Cathedral. On the hill behind the cathedral lies Glasgow Necropolis, a timeworn Victorian cemetery. Just a 20-minute drive from the city center is Bothwell Castle, a remnant of the past. For those after a little more culture, an attraction which exemplifies Glasgow’s fascinating blend of the earthy and the elaborate is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is one of the oldest, and most distinguished, learning institutions in the world.
From its rich history to its irreverent character, a #vacation to Glasgow will show you elements from all walks of life.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Dazza Rates Glasgow's Coronation Restaurant | Get Battered
Dazza is a fish supper expert. He knows what he is talking about when it comes to this chippy delicacy.
In this video, Dazza is in Glasgow and he's looking at the batter and quality of the fish, the crunch and stiffness of the chips, and the tang and bite of the pickled egg. Dazza expertly analyses the fish and chips and gives each a carefully considered rating out of ten.
Unfortunately, there were nae pickled eggs in this chippy so he has to try a gherkin, and to be honest, he wouldn't even recommend it to the pigeons...

UK: SCOTLAND: FRENCH PRESIDENT CHIRAC VISIT TO GLASGOW PREVIEW
English/Nat
From politics to poverty - French President Jacques Chirac has been seeing the other side of life today Thursday as he continues his state visit to Britain by visiting a run down housing estate in the Scottish city of Glasgow.
He will see work being done to revitalise Easterhouse - one of Glasgow's most deprived areas - by the Prince's Trust, a charity created by the Prince of Wales.
But many in Glasgow say the city's problems are too deep seated to be tackled by small scale projects.
President Jacques Chirac leaves behind the pomp and ceremony of the state visit Thursday to travel to the 1960's-built Easterhouse estate on Glasgow's eastern fringe.
He will be visiting houses renovated by the Prince's Trust - a charity set up by the Prince Charles.
But the President will not get to see these homes in the heart of the estate.
Glasgow was European City of Culture in 1990, but away from the city centre, and
away from the projects organised by Prince Charles's Prince's Trust living conditions in the heart of Easterhouse are bleak.
And its residents are not impressed at being included on the state itinerary.
SOUNDBITE:
No, I think it is a lot of rubbish anyway. They are not interested in us anyway. This is just a publicity stunt or something.
SUPER CAPTION: VoxPop
SOUNDBITE:
Really it's just kind of propaganda on his part, isn't it? It's good publicity. It will show him with the peasants - sort of thing.
SUPER CAPTION: VoxPop
Glasgow has more than its fair share of inner-city problems - not least its reputation as the U-K's drugs capital.
These former drug users are shaking off their own addiction at the PARC project.
There are around 200 similar drugs groups across Glasgow.
But drugs workers say the city itself needs more help to shake off its bad name.
SOUNDBITE:
Tackling drug use in isolation is an impossible task. You have to look at an holistic approach, you have to look at the whole range. And it is not just about cosmetically doing up the front of the buildings - it is about the psychological, sociological and health issues that are associated with why people use drugs in the first place.
SUPER CAPTION: Archie Clark, PARC drug-rehabilitation centre
President Chirac will not be visiting the housing project of Drumchapel in the west of the city - which is battling similar problems to Easterhouse.
Unemployment here is a major problem. In some parts of Glasgow one in three people are out of work.
Those in charge of city regeneration schemes say Glasgow's problems are the problems faced by cities the world over.
SOUNDBITE:
I think we have a huge policy issue here that stretches across the western world. And it's all a matter of putting cities in context. Cities are the economic motors of the future. They are also our best opportunity for delivering sustainable development in the future.
SUPER CAPTION: Mike Hayes, Director of Planning and Development, Glasgow City Council
The Saracen district of Maryhill in the north of the city has also been ravaged by the same social and economic problems affecting Easterhouse.
Police say crime here and throughout Glasgow is down following recent hard-hitting campaigns, but in the Easterhouse area crime is three times higher than elsewhere in Glasgow.
But they admit that more policing is not the answer to all the Strathclyde region's difficulties.
SOUNDBITE:
SUPER CAPTION: Assistant Chief Constable Crispian Strachan, Strathclyde Police
Like Paris, Glasgow's sprawling housing estates were built on the fringes of the city in the nineteen sixties but with the decline of heavy industry, the estates quickly became isolated and crippled by unemployment.

This is our second time visiting Glasgow, UK and our city guide is a combination of footage from our visit this year and last year. Glasgow has a thriving food scene (both Scottish food and International) and we give you a thorough food tour as we bite our way around the city.

In today’s video we’re going to be showing you around Glasgow, Scotland. This is a city that we visited last autumn and then again this summer, and on both visits, we ate like kings and queens because it turns out, Glasgow is a great destination for foodies.
Since we never got around to making a travel guide on our first visit, today we’re going to be combining the footage from both of those trips to show you some of the best things to do in Glasgow and also some of the best places to eat and drink it. So let’s get started!
And that’s a wrap for our visit to Glasgow, Scotland. We loved our two visits and we’d gladly return for a 3rd. This is an amazing city for foodies and there are so many great bars, restaurants, breweries, and distilleries to visit.
Also FYI - if you’re already visiting Edinburgh, Glasgow is just a short 50-minute train ride away, and it’s a city with its own unique vibe.
If there are any other fun things to do in Glasgow that you’d like to share with travellers, feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments below. Wishing you happy travels!
