The Best Town in Alaska for Wildlife Viewing!
Valdez, Alaska in an RV is the best way to experience this small ocean side town. Valdez is nestled among fjords on Prince William Sound. You probably know it as the primary location affected by the Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill in the 80s.

It was the perfect spot for us to hide out for a week between Tim’s crazy Dalton adventure and the arrival of Tim’s parents the following week in to Anchorage.
It was SO NICE to finally be next to the ocean. After being in an RV for months driving through the center of North America we finally reached the coast. This finally felt like the RV experience we had been looking for. We had all the comforts of “home” as well as adventure and beautiful views right outside our door.
Valdez is a very very small town with only a few restaurants, a Best Western hotel, and LOADS of RV parks.
Somehow we managed to call the same day and get a spot right on the water at the Bear Paw RV Resort.
We had to move spots due to availability after a few days in to town, but there’s not a bad RV spot around. Every where you look you are surrounded by mountains, waterfalls and bald eagles.
It was really nice here catching up on work. The fact that Valdez Alaska is one of the wettest places in north america meant we spent a lot of time inside. We didn’t do much vlogging… hence the abnormal amount of voiceover in this episode, but we want to show what Valdez has to offer as it was one of our favorite places in the state.
It’s popular to take a day cruise out to the near by the Columbia Glacier. We opted out mostly because we were using this week to work and it was a little long to leave Pepper at home. We did love all of the other things to do in town.
Our favorite was the Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery.
Every year this hatchery releases approximately 230 million pink salmon and 2 million coho salmon. The fish later return to the hatchery by entering the facility using a fish ladder which carry the fish from Prince William Sound “up stream”. This process is known as ocean ranching and occurs every year!
The amount of fish here was just astounding. This of course made the entire area a popular destination for other wild life.
Just up the road at other river inlets is a popular place to spot our favorite animal right off the side of the road. BEAR
There’s only one road in and out of Valdez so you’ll definitely won’t miss Bridal veil falls and the X glacier on your way in and out, unless of course you’ll be riding the ferry on the Alaska Marine highway which can take you down to south east Alaska or up closer to Anchorage.
It was time to head to Anchorage where we met up with a couple who had found us through our New Zealand videos. Fortunately for us they happen to be the owners of Double Shovel Brewing in Anchorage and were wonderful hosts for the evening.
So at this time, Double Shovel isn’t on Harvest Hosts yet, but there is one harvest host in Anchorage. We would definitely recommend checking them out because, surprisingly enough, downtown Anchorage had THE WORST RV options we’ve seen the entire trip.
Another big thanks to Galen and Morgan who made our visit to Anchorage very memorable, or not… if you know what I mean.
Stay tuned for Sunday where we head to Seward with Tim’s parents and kayak to the Aialik Glacier with one of the funniest people we met on the trip…

Valdez, Alaska
Now that our Alaska Tour caravan has completed, four families decided to travel home together! Our first night was boondocking (dry camping) along the road just north of Anchorage. The following day we turned south and headed to Valdez, Alaska!
The 100 mile drive into Valdez took us past numerous spectacular vistas that we had to stop at and take pictures! In Valdez we found a beautiful campground nestled amongst towering glacial & snow covered mountains! I was able to take multiple quadcopter flights to capture the beauty!
We would greatly appreciate your support by using the link below for all your future Amazon.com purchases. It will be totally transparent to your Amazon shopping, and doesn’t cost you a thing!

Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery
State Fish and Game has a salmon hatchery on the south side of Port Valdez next to the Alyeska pipeline terminal. The hatchery raises pink salmon, considered trash fish by some and fed to the racing dogs (also called dog salmon).
The fish are raised in pens that are fed by water from a creek coming out of the mountain. This imprints the scent of the creek on them and brings them back here to spawn. You can see a lot of fish just downstream from the weir at the entrance to the hatchery and some that have made it on top.
We haven't seen them yet but the bears apparently gather to feed here on returning salmon. Some folks obviously need a reminder not to interfere with bears.

See bald eagles, bears (unless you’re us) and sea lions at Solomon Gulch Fish Hatchery. If you’re driving your RV, there’s RV parking.
The Town of Valdez
Valdez is a small town full of bunnies. It’s easy to walk or ride bikes around. Stop at the waterfront to look for sea otters eating crabs.
Eagle’s Rest Campground
Eagle’s Rest was a convenient campground but a little loud. Our site was right next to a 24-hour car wash and a Safeway open 4am - midnight. Look at the map when choosing your site and avoid those areas. You could walk and bike to everything in town from here though.
Lu-Lu Belle Glacier Wildlife Cruises
Captain Fred narrates an amazing tour of Prince William Sound. You will see a ton of wildlife and get up close to the Columbia Glacier. Bring all of your winter layers - it’s really cold up by the glacier!

Now, in earnest, we try to experience the wilderness and wilderness of Alaska and head for the port city of Baldys, which is five hours away from Anchorage. I passed the coast road, people were taking pictures so hard I stopped the car. White animals are grazing. As you can see, it is a goat. Goats go freely on steep rocky mountains. The little goat born this spring has begun to grow horns little by little. To go to Valdis, you have to pass the high hill called Thompson Pass. Here, you can see the magnificent mountains covered in snow, and travelers are bound to stop. In June, wild flowers bloom and beautifully decorate the mountains. At the top of Thompson Pass Hill is the Wading Glacier, a land glacier. It is the first glacier in Alaska. I went up to the Worthington Glacier. When you go up about 30 minutes, the snow field starts to come out. At first glance, it looks like snow on top of the mountain. But the blue, rugged surface tells us that this is a glacier. The glacier was bigger than I thought. It stretches far from the top of the mountain, and the area is said to be three times closer than Yeouido. Melted water flows down from the glacier and forms a waterfall. These waters flow into the river, into the sea. I immersed my hands in the glacier melted water, and it is so cold that I can not bear it for only 5 seconds.
