Nomads Auckland backpackers hostel - New Zealand @ Rooftop Sundeck
Just a small shot of the rooftop sundeck of the Nomads Auckland backpackers, were I stayed for some days while visiting New Zealand on April, 2010.
If you're looking for a nice, clean and cheap place to stay in Auckland, I would recommend this place. It's located downtown, near from all best places to visit in Auckland and also a cool place to make new friends. More info

Where we stayed:
Creeksyde Queenstown Holiday Park * * * *
+ Lovely 2 bedroom apartment with lots of living space. Clean and well furnished. Close to the city centre. BBQ facilities!
- Only 4 chairs in the living room and the double bed took up a lot of space. Kitchen was a little on the small side.
The Loft Apartments * * * *
+ Great living space in this apartment and a beautiful balcony with views of the lake and the The Remarkables. Perfect location right in the middle of town.
- The second box bedroom was TINY. Bunkbeds.
Food and drink:
The Sundeck * * * *
Fantastic views from this rooftop bar. Friendly bar staff. Great for a cocktail or two.
Madam Woo * * * * *
Fantastic Malaysian fusion restaurant serving full flavours in a variety of dishes. Fantastic service, welcoming interior decor, great ambient lighting. Worth a visit!
Ferg Burger * * * *
Worth the queue to try the infamous Ferg Burger. Juicy burger filled with fresh salad and garnished with blue cheese.
Fat Badger’s * * * * *
Really REALLY tasty pizza. Great for dinner - large pizza is HUGE. Also good for lunch, great lunch deals!
Ferg Baker * * * * *
No queue at all for this place! The pastry on the pie was heaven and the flavours were GREAT. Great value for money too!
Harry’s Pool Bar * * * *
Great place to have a drink while playing some pool. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, cool place to hang out. Quite busy, sometimes hard to get a table but worth trying!
Perky’s Floating Bar * * * *
Reasonable prices and super friendly staff! Not only do you have the novelty of being on a floating bar but it's also BYO - Food. Grab yourself a Ferg and head on over!

Beautiful seafood cooked to perfection. Good service and great outdoor seating with the best views of the The Remarkables.
Devil Burger * * * *
Juicy meat, well garnished.
Flame Bar & Grill * * * * *

What we did:
Wanaka (just over an hours drive from Queenstown) * * * * *
Lovely drive through beautiful scenery and definitely worth the drive. The Wanaka Tree is breathtaking.
Millford Sound (4 hour drive from Queenstown) * * * *
Took a beautiful boat tour through the fiord (Approx. $66 p.p). Beautiful scenes. 4 stars instead as 5 as it did take quite a while to get there and back.
Skyline New Zealand Gondola & Luge * * * * *
SO MUCH FUN! Definitely do this if you find yourself in Queenstown. 5 luges not enough!
Walk to Sunshine Bay * * * * *
Beautiful hike along the side of Lake Wakatipu to Sunshine Bay. Definitely worth doing!
Frisbee Golf in Queenstown Gardens * * * * *
Can’t recommend this enough! Hours of fun playing frisbee golf in the gardens. The frisbee itself costs $5 to rent. Heaps of fun!
Lake Pukaki & Mt Cook (3 - 4 hour drive from Queenstown) * * * * *
The most stunning lake. Just breathtaking. Mount Cook didn’t disappoint either. Beautiful hikes take you alongside glaciers and through the mountains.
Te Anau Glow Worm Tour * * * *
Incredible. The tour included a boat trip across Lake Te Anau to where the glow worm caves are situated and a smaller boat trip through the caves. Definitely something special that you will remember for a lifetime.
Te Anau Bird Sanctuary * * *
Beautiful collection of birds including wonderful rare Takahē.
Enjoi Wine Tour * * * * *
Really really enjoyed this day. Visited 4 vineyards (should have been 5 but we ran out of time) and tasted over 25 different wines. Robbie (tour guide) made the journeying from one vineyard to the other fun but also informative. Excellent choice of lunch venue - Mount Difficulty! Lots of fun!
Travel Log - AUCKLAND
Where we stayed:
Garden City Lodge * * * *
+ Great value for money. Perfect location in Parnell. Clean rooms and shared bathrooms. Really wonderful old building full of historical architecture and character. It was originally built for the Queen of Tonga!
- Nobody at the reception to check us in.
Food and drink:
Blue Elephant * * * *
Delicious authentic Thai food. Wonderful service. Beautiful interior.
Verve Cafe * * * *
Avo on toast was delicious. Not much seating inside so ended up sitting out the front which was fine albeit a little rainy.
Panhead Custom Bar * * * * *
Best Ale in New Zealand! Fantastic selection. Loved the feel of the place. Cool music - friendly staff. Pool table and darts board. Right on the waterfront!
Asian Ruby * * * * *
Wow. The flavours here. Not much a fan of the interior, way too much lighting. 5 stars for the food though!
What we did:
Mount Eden * * * * *
Definitely worth the hike to the top. Spectacular panoramic views across the whole city!

Nomads in Auckland.
Nomads in Auckland was my first stop on my travels in New Zealand!!
Nomads is one of the go to hostels for a lot of travellers in Australasia and i have stayed in a few more since leaving Nomads in Auckland and i have not been disappointed.
The essentials i look for when travelling and looking for a hostel is:
- A kitchen (cheap way to eat rather than eating out!)
- A clean room
- A decent set of showers...... AND CLEAN TOILETS!!!
- A comfy bed
And Nomads ticked all the boxes and more. The kitchen was on the top floor with a rooftop area to eat your meal with gorgeous views of the city. They also had a rooftop hot tub , Chilled out tv room, Free wifi and the staff were so so friendly during my stay.
They offer prices for every kind of budget from dorm rooms to privates.
