The War of 1812 - Crash Course US History #11
In which John Green teaches you about the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and its former colonial overlord England. It started in, you guessed it 1812. The war lasted until 1815, and it resolved very little. John will take you through the causes of the war, tell you a little bit about the fighting itself, and get into just why the US Army couldn't manage to make any progress invading Canada. And yes, Canadians, we're going to talk about the White House getting burned down. The upshot: no territory changed hands, and most of the other bones of contention were solved prior to the actual war. Although nothing much changed for the US and England, the Native Americans were the big losers. Tecumseh was killed, and the Indian tribes lost a lot of territory. Watch as John lays it all out for you. Also, check out #1812problems on Twitter. It's awesome.

Hard Living in the Big Easy: Immigrants & the Rebirth of New Orleans
Hard Living in the Big Easy: Immigrants & the Rebirth of New Orleans documents José Torres-Tama's mixed media works on paper for a September 2018 exhibition at the UNO Saint Claude Gallery. In his Blue Brujo performance persona and from his home studio, he discusses art works created to honor the contributions of Latin American immigrants to the reconstruction of the city in the 13 years post-Katrina. Also, he exposes the fact that during this era of anti-immigrant hysteria, the 2018 Tricentennial has brutally deported Latin American immigrants, who have given their sweat, labor, and love to rebuild the city, from their programs, and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities has published a 300-year anthology titled New Orleans & the World, where immigrants are disappeared.
Our immigrant community and long Latin legacy has been excluded from the LEH's Eurocentric account of history! It's the job of the artist to remember, and call out the official lies told by these cultural institutions that serve as hegemonic gatekeepers to decide who will be remembered and who shall be forgotten. 2017 Dan Sweat Award - Andrew Young
Andrew Jackson Young Jr., known as Andrew Young Jr., was born in New Orleans, La on March 12, 1932. After graduating from Howard University, Young chose to study at Connecticut's Hartford Theological Seminary and became an ordained minister in 1955. A colleague and friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Young coordinated desegregation efforts throughout the South, eventually becoming the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's executive director and later executive vice president. During this time, he helped draw up the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Young was elected to the House of Representatives in 1972, the first African American to represent Georgia in Congress since Reconstruction. When President Jimmy Carter was in office, he chose Young to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. While ambassador, Young advocated for human rights on a global scale, such as sanctions to oppose rule by apartheid in South Africa. Young was elected as Atlanta's mayor in 1981 and was successful in his campaign for Atlanta to host the Olympic Games in 1996.
The author of multiple books and the leader of the equality and economic justice consulting firm Good Works International, Young remains an esteemed civil rights activist. He has received accolades that include the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's Springarn Medal. Morehouse College named the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership in his honor, and Young has taught at Georgia State University's Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.
About the Dan Sweat Award:
This prestigious award is given in memory of Dan Sweat, past CAP President, who led the organization and Downtown Atlanta through very tumultuous times in the business and political environment of this City's growth. On November 4, 2016, the National Socialist Movement gathered for a rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The event was four days before the US presidential election and featured speeches given by NSM commander Jeff Schoep and National commander of the America First Committee, Arthur J. Jones Jr. At the rally, leaders discussed how Donald Trump's presidential campaign has brought white supremacism into the mainstream and legitimized their beliefs. Mark Potok from the Southern Poverty Law Center contextualizes the event with his discussion of how Trump has created political space for extremists by courting the support and validating the beliefs of groups on the alt-right. The rally closed with discussion of how the neo-Nazi groups plan to organize a show of force on Election Day.

The Ojays' Eddie LeVert is introduced by Tim Lampley
Eddie Levert, Sr. is one of the founders and lead singers of the legendary R&B group, The O'Jays. Known for his raspy voice and sexy moves, Eddie has a range that takes him from alto to second tenor, with a career that spans over 50 years.
Eddie Levert was born June 16, 1942 in Bessemer, Alabama. At the age of 6 Eddie moved to Canton, Ohio where he attended church regularly and joined the church choir and began his musical journey. As Eddie continued singing into his teenage years he became a recognized voice in the church choir, sang in school plays and performed regularly on a gospel radio show. By the time he reached high school, young Eddie Levert knew that singing was what he wanted to do, teaming up with classmates Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles to form a group called the Triumps. The Triumps played locally in Canton opening for different acts, playing sock hops and just about everything that came up. Their big break came when The Triumphs traveled to Cinncinatti to canvas King Records. King Records President Sid Nathan, immediately impressed, changed their name to The Mascots and signed them to his label. The Mascots’ popularity grew as their songs could be heard with increased frequency on Cleveland radio stations. In 1969, The O’Jays signed with Philadelphia International Records where they released hit after hit and were propelled to stardom.
In spite of their success as a touring group and on the R&B charts, the group had been considering quitting the music industry in 1972; around that same time original members Bill Isles and Bobby Massey departed, leaving the group a trio. The remaining three original members, Eddie Levert, William Powell, and Walter Williams, soldiered on and Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters with whom the O'Jays had been working for several years, signed them to their Philadelphia International label. Suddenly, The O'Jays' fortunes changed and they finally scored with their first million-seller, Back Stabbers,[1] from the album of the same name. This album produced several more hit singles, including 992 Arguments, Sunshine, Time To Get Down, and the #1 pop smash, Love Train.
During the remainder of the 1970s the O'Jays continued releasing hit singles, including Put Your Hands Together (Pop #10), For the Love of Money (Pop #9), Give the People What They Want, Let Me Make Love To You, I Love Music (Pop #5), Livin' for the Weekend, Message in Our Music and Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet Tender Love). Original member William Powell died of cancer in 1977 at age 35.
After adding Sammy Strain (born December 9, 1939) (of Little Anthony and the Imperials), the O'Jays continued recording, though with limited success. 1978's Use ta Be My Girl was their final Top Five hit, though they continued placing songs on the R&B charts throughout the 1980s
The O'Jays later signed with EMI-Manhattan Records and Levert and Williams began co-writing and producing their own tracks. Their EMI debut album, “Let Me Touch You”, went to number three R&B and boasted Lovin' You, the number one R&B hit from the summer 1987.
Currently, Eddie Levert is actively performing and touring the world with the O’Jays well as performing as a solo artist currently touring with Johhny Gill, Keith Sweat and others.. In the Winter of 2011, Eddie Levert, Sr. completed his debut solo CD, “Eddie Levert: I Still Have It”. Throughout Levert’s career, the O’Jays have contributed 10 Gold and platinum albums. Eddie Levert currently resides in Las Vegas, NV with his wife Raquel and daughter Ryan.

ch 9) Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom
chapter 9: A People's History (Of The United States) Howard Zinn.
~
Chapter 9, Slavery Without Submission, Emancipation Without Freedom addresses slave rebellions, the abolition movement, the Civil War, and the effect of these events on African-Americans. Zinn writes that the large-scale violence of the war was used to end slavery instead of the small-scale violence of the rebellions because the latter may have expanded beyond anti-slavery, resulting in a movement against the capitalist system. He writes that the war could limit the freedom granted to African-Americans by allowing the government control over how that freedom was gained.

2018 Winter Lecture Series - The Fateful Compromise of 1850
Before the Civil War there was the Compromise of 1850. The arguments between the North and South over slavery in the new territories began to boil over during an era when the United States was becoming a player on the world stage with territory acquired during the recent war with Mexico. Would slavery expand into these new territories or would it be confined to the southern states only?
