The Vasa Museum - 17th Century Swedish Warship, Stockholm, Sweden | 2017 4K
The Swedish Warship Vasa (Regalskeppet Vasa in Swedish) is the ship that inspired the design of the Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Now located at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden.
Vasa (or Wasa) is a Swedish warship built between 1626 and 1628. The ship foundered after sailing about 1,300 m (1,400 yd) into its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. It fell into obscurity after most of her valuable bronze cannon were salvaged in the 17th century until she was located again in the late 1950s in a busy shipping lane just outside the Stockholm harbor. Salvaged with a largely intact hull in 1961, it was housed in a temporary museum called Wasavarvet ('The Wasa Shipyard') until 1988 and then moved permanently to the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. The ship is one of Sweden's most popular tourist attractions and has been seen by over 35 million visitors since 1961. Since her recovery, Vasa has become a widely recognised symbol of the Swedish 'great power period' and is today a de facto standard in the media and among Swedes for evaluating the historical importance of shipwrecks.
The ship was built on the orders of the King of Sweden Gustavus Adolphus as part of the military expansion he initiated in a war with Poland-Lithuania (1621–1629). It was constructed at the navy yard in Stockholm under a contract with private entrepreneurs in 1626–1627 and armed primarily with bronze cannon cast in Stockholm specifically for the ship. Richly decorated as a symbol of the king's ambitions for Sweden and himself, upon completion she was one of the most powerfully armed vessels in the world. However, Vasa was dangerously unstable and top-heavy with too much weight in the upper structure of the hull. Despite this lack of stability she was ordered to sea and foundered only a few minutes after encountering a wind stronger than a breeze.

The Vasa Museum
The Vasa is the only preserved seventeenth-century ship in the world, and a unique art treasure. More than 95 percent of the ship is original, and it is decorated with hundreds of carved sculptures.
The 69 meter-long warship Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in the middle of Stockholm in 1628, and was salvaged 333 years later in 1961. For nearly half a century the ship has been slowly, deliberately and painstakingly restored to a state approaching its original glory. The three masts on the roof outside the specially built museum show the height of the ship's original masts. Today the Vasa Museum is the most visited museum in Scandinavia, with over one million visitors a year.

Sweden: Visit to Birka Viking Village - A Living History Museum
While Melynda took the day to go hike, the Henry and the boys took a boat tour to the viking village of Birka outside Stockholm. The weather was rainy but with a few glimpses of sun and there was of course easy access to fika. The boys really got a lot out of the museum and guided tour in English and they really enjoyed their own mock battle at the walls. Henry liked the recreated viking village and long boats.

Visiting the Royal Castle in Stockholm - Sweden 4K Travel Channel
The Stockholm Palace is in the center of Stockholm, not far from the Old Town Gamla Stan on the island of Stadsholmen. The Palace, also called the Royal Palace, was built on the foundation walls of the Tre Kronor Palace, which burnt down in 1697. It is one of the largest castles in Europe and has 605 rooms, one room more than the Buckingham Palace. But who has already counted them?
The Stockholm Palace now houses the offices of the King and other members of the Royal House. As the official residence, it is also used for representation purposes.
The former living rooms are mainly publicly accessible as a museum. The castle also houses the Tre Kronor Museum, the Royal Armory and Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities. There is also the treasury, but unfortunately filming is strictly forbidden (why actually?).
The Royal Apartments (castle museum)
After we have inspected the central inner courtyard, we enter the main building. Via a staircase, we reach the throne and coronation hall. A highlight of our tour is the gallery of Karl XI. The hall of mirrors is used for banquets of up to 170 guests. The inspiration for this hall was by its namesake, the hall of mirrors in the Versailles Palace.
One floor down is a series of rooms, used for representation purposes. There is also a collection of clocks with models from all epochs. Interesting is a model of the clock tower of Mecca, a gift to the king on a visit to Saudi Arabia 2011.
The Tre Kronor Museum
This museum is dedicated to the original Tre Kronor Palace. The name Tre Kronor goes back to the realm symbol, the three crowns. They once crowned the castle, which was destroyed by a heavy fire in 1697. The entrance of the Tre Kronor Museum is in the basement of the palace.
You see various models of the old castle and a part of the original foundation wall here. Next to the Tre Kronor Museum is the Treasury
Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities

Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden
Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden
The Vasa Museum is a maritime museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Located on the island of Djurgården, the museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged, the 64-gun warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. The Vasa Museum opened in 1990 and, according to the official web site, is the most visited museum in Scandinavia.
Seventeenth century Sweden was an up-and-coming state with great ambitions. Colonial expansion was on the mind of every royal, and for Sweden, the Navy was to be the backbone of any successful grand strategy. A ship called Vasa was built as the flagship of the new Swedish navy. King Gustavus Adolphus himself commissioned the ship.
The ship was to be a giant floating fortress. The combined weight of the ammunition fired from one side of the boat was 588 pounds, making it the most well-armed ship to date. Vasa’s armament included 48 light cannons, two additional large cannons of an older design, eight “three-pounders” and six large howitzers for use during boarding action. All this heavy firepower was crammed onto both the ship’s lower and upper floors, making for a somewhat top-heavy design. Construction problems were evident from the beginning, and early stability tests showed the ship was in constant danger of capsizing. Nonetheless, under pressure from the royal court, the ship was completed on a very tight schedule.
On August 10 of 1628 the Vasa was deemed complete and launched on its maiden voyage. It managed to sail for a little less then one nautical mile. A gust of wind made her keel to her port side and water started pouring through the open gun ports onto her lower deck. The ship sank in matter of minutes, in full view of a crowd which had gathered to witness the launching, including foreign ambassadors and royal officials. The loss of the Vasa was a blow to both the prestige of Sweden and its economy–one from which its navy never fully recovered.
Though the Swedish court looked long and hard for a guilty party, none were found, and the official investigator, upon being asked the cause of the sinking, replied “only God knows.”
As the ship sank in only 32 meters of water, several early salvage attempts were made, all of them unsuccessful. The ship’s location was eventually lost to history, until it was relocated in the 1950s under the efforts of amateur archaeologist Anders Franzén. Vasa was lifted to the surface in April of 1961 after being underwater for some 333 years. Thousands of artifacts and the remains of at least 15 people were found in and around the hull of the Vasa. (Ironically it was the heavy pollution of the Swedish bay which killed wood-eating microorganisms and helped preserve the ship.)
The Vasa museum was opened in 1990, to permanently house the remains of the ship. It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia.

We love history museums. We usually look for one when we get to a city just to understand where we've ended up and have a richer experience overall. This one blew us away. Well, Sweden has constantly been blowing us away anyway... ;)
HRH Princess Madeleine at the American Swedish Historical Museum, June 5, 2011
On Sunday, June 5, 2011, Princess Madeleine of Sweden was the guest of honor at the opening ceremony for the Sven Gunnarsson and Jonas Nilsson New Sweden gallery at the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She had to leave shortly after the ceremony in order to fly back to Sweden to join her family for the National Day of Sweden (Sveriges nationaldag) celebration in Stockholm the next day:
By the time she left the museum, it was probably nearly eleven-thirty p.m. Stockholm time, so hopefully she was able to get some sleep on the plane!

5. Nordic museum.
Nordic Museum is the Sweden's biggest historical center of social history. Arranged on the Djurgarden Island in the focal point of Stockholm, the superb exhibition hall building is one of Stockholm's actual historic points and certainly justified regardless of a visit in itself. An assortment of displays on mold and materials, furniture and insides, china and table settings, people workmanship, adornments, photography, patterns, and customs.
6. Millesgarden.
Millesgarden is called by many an oasis, and it is very true. It is an ensemble of terraces, gardens, stairs, fountains all decorated by beautiful sculptures.
