Myanmar Thailand Border, Tachilek - Mae Sai, Market in Tachilek
Crossing the border between Mae Sai, Thailand and Tachilek, Myanmar to visit the local market.
Mae Sai on the Burmese Border in The Northern Thailand
Mae Sai is the northernmost district (amphoe) of Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand. It is a major border crossing between Thailand and Myanmar, which Asian Highway Network AH2 (Thailand Route 1 or Phahonyothin Road) crossing the Mae Sai River to the town Tachileik in Myanmar. 1 day passes for non-Burma nationals are issued at Burma customs in Tachileik, passports are confiscated and a temporary travel permit is issued which is exchanged for your passport upon crossing back into Thailand.
The Golden Triangle is one of Asia's two main illicit opium-producing areas. It is an area of around 350,000 square kilometres that overlaps the mountains of four countries of Southeast Asia: Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. (Other interpretations of the Golden Triangle also include a section of Yunnan Province, China.) Along with Afghanistan in the Golden Crescent and Pakistan, it has been one of the most extensive opium-producing areas of Asia and of the world since the 1950s. The Golden Triangle also designates the confluence of the Ruak River and the Mekong river, since the term has been appropriated by the Thai tourist industry to describe the nearby junction of Thailand, Laos, and Burma.
Opium and morphine base produced in northeastern Burma are transported by horse and donkey caravans to refineries along the ThailandBurma border for conversion to heroin and heroin base. Most of the finished products are shipped across the border into various towns in North Thailand and down to Bangkok for further distribution to international markets. In the past major Thai Chinese and Burmese Chinese traffickers in Bangkok have controlled much of the foreign sales and movement of Southeast Asian heroin from Thailand, but a combination of law enforcement pressure, publicity and a regional drought has significantly reduced their role. As a consequence, many less-predominant traffickers in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand now control smaller quantities of the heroin going to international markets.
Heroin from Southeast Asia is most frequently brought to the United States by couriers, typically Thai and U.S. nationals and Hong Kong Chinese, traveling on commercial airlines. California and Hawaii are the primary U.S. entry points for Golden Triangle heroin, but small percentages of the drug are trafficked into New York City and Washington, D.C. While Southeast Asian groups have had success in trafficking heroin to the United States, they initially had difficulty arranging street level distribution. However, with the incarceration of Asian traffickers in American prisons during the 1970s, contacts between Asian and American prisoners developed. These contacts have allowed Southeast Asian traffickers access to individuals and organizations distributing heroin at the retail level.[
In recent years, the production has shifted to Yaba and other forms of methamphetamine, including for export to the United States.
Mae Sai, Thailand and Tachileik, Myanmar
14 May 2014 - I took a local bus from Chiang Rai to the border town of Mae Sai where I spent part of the day climbing up a hill where there was construction to build a Buddhist complex. At the top, you could see Mae Sai as well as Tachileik, Myanmar. I give my thoughts about plans changing - at this point, I was due to arrive in Myanmar a couple days earlier but decided it would be better to stay in Thailand to heal my injury...

Border Run To Mae Sai (Thai-Myanmar Border)
In early December we were due for our first visa run, so we headed up to Mae Sai, on the border of Myanmar. I have a bit of a history with this town - I used to head up there all the time on my motorbike when I lived in Chiang Rai. It was really nice to see it 10 years later!
It was a long day but only about four hours each way. The service we used was

THAILAND TO MYANMAR BORDER CROSSING | May Sot to Myawaddy overland
We crossed the Thailand - Myanmar border from Mae Sot to Myawaddy overland and learnt a couple of things along the way. If you're planning on crossing this border hopefully this info comes in handy. The local bus, Myanmar Visa process, onward travel (we were never asked) and immigration was a breeze when we crossed so hopefully it's the same for you too :)
Check out our last video where we hitchhiked from Ayutthaya to Mae Sot:

Thai Burma Border at Mae Sai 1999
Mae Sai - the northernmost point in Thailand.
This is a good place for starting into the Burmese part of the Golden Triangle.
But today we stay at the little bridge connecting both countries: the border traffic equals a never ending movie - well nearly, because border gates are closed from 18:00 to 6:00 Thai time

Crossing the Thailand/Myanmar Border (Mae Sot to Myawaddy)
The land border crossing from Mae Sot, Thailand, to Myawaddy, Myanmar, is a popular one for backpackers. The crossing goes over the Friendship Bridge across a river, and the transit is as simple as hoisting your backpack and walking across the bridge.
The Myanmar side is particularly easy because downtown Myawaddy is right there on the other side of the bridge. You step out of immigration and you are right in the middle of town. There is a lot of transportation waiting for you, and you can hop on a share taxi to Hpa An or Mawlamyine or arrange a bus farther afield to Yangon and other cities.
Taking things slow, I decided to find a place to stay in Myawaddy and check out that town before moving on. As it turned out, finding a budget-friendly hotel was the biggest challenge.
Cheers,

going across the border from Mae Sai, Thailand to Tachilek, Myanmar.
Chiang Rai to Mae Sai to Tachileik (Myanmar)
Chiang Rai to Mae Sai to Tachileik (Myanmar), April 2011
I started my trip in Chiang Rai Bus Station
Buses depart every 30 mins or so for Mae Sai. The fare is 39 baht for the 65 Km trip that takes about 1 ½ hours. Buses are quite basic but depart on time, leaving half full but quickly filling up along the way.
On arrival in Mae Sai there are Songthaew waiting to take you to the Myanmar border. A Songthaew cost 15 Baht to the bridge and border crossing into Myanmar
There is a busy market area around the border crossing on the Thailand side. A steady flow of assorted vehicles passes from Thailand into Myanmar.
The Immigration process on the Thai side is straight forward, then a short walk over the bridge to Myanmar Immigration. Half way across the bridge the traffic flow changes from left to right.
Myanmar Immigration is not as well sign posted or organised. The entrance to Immigration is hidden behind a curtain under the Passport Only sign. You fill in the forms and pay US$10 and are issued with a temporary entry and your passport kept.
The main market area in Tachileik is immediately to the right, after the bridge, and has an enormous range of goods are available. A lively market, popular with Thai's and Farang tourists
Counterfeited goods are very popular. Lots of mobile phones, watches and handbags. The handbags were very good copies and about 1/4 the cost to Bangkok (at MBK).
When it's time to leave, head back over the bridge again, follow the signs wind along the path to where you exchange you temporary visa for your passport. Cross the bridge again and head back into Thailand, remembering that Thailand issues only 15 day entry permits at land crossings.
Thailand - Myanmar (Burma) Border Crossing (Golden Triangle)
A rainy day at the Thailand-Myanmar (Burma) border crossing at the edge of the Golden Triangle. Our Thailand guide is talking in the background about shopping in Burma. When the auto traffic crosses the bridge they must change sides of the road to be in compliance with each countries driving laws. The bridge connects the towns of Mae Sai in Thailand to the town Tachileik in Myanmar.

The market is a maze of shops with goods from China, Burma and
Thailand. The actual border crossing is the large blue building you see
in the pictures. Many people cross from Burma to work in Thailand.
