Veterans Memorial Bridge (Port Arthur, TX) westbound [2017 Special Edition]
The first cable-stayed bridge in Texas was this structure built from 1988-91. The longest span is 640 ft and it spans just shy of two miles in total across the Neches River near the busy port city of Port Arthur on the Gulf of Mexico.
NOTE: Due to construction that closed the westbound Rainbow Bridge, the adjacent Veterans Bridge (which normally carries only eastbound traffic) was reconfigured to carry two-way traffic - that configuration is presented in this video.

The sweetest bridge I've ever crossed. Look close at the end for a Big ass sail boat just laying in the middle of the street.

The Rainbow Bridge, Texas
The Rainbow Bridge is a cantilever bridge stand on Neches River in Southeast Texas just upstream from Sabine Lake. It allows State Highway 87 and State Highway 73 to connect Port Arthur in Jefferson County on the southwest bank of the river with Bridge City in Orange County on the northeast bank. Construction on the bridge began in 1936 under the guidance of the Texas State Highway Department. The bridge was completed on September 8, 1938. The nearby town of Prairie View took on the name Bridge City in response. Due to concerns by the upstream city of Beaumont about the bridge posing a threat to ship navigation, the south’s tallest bridge, spanning 176 feet above and 680 feet across the Neches River. Adjacent, is the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, the sister span tothe Rainbow Bridge.
Initially named the Port Arthur-Orange Bridge, it received its current name in 1957. The bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. A special driving rig was designed. The eight pairs of reinforced concrete piers were to extend from ninety-five feet to 102 feet below the surface of the water and rise eleven feet to twenty feet above. The sixty-eight smaller piers were to be supported to an average depth of seventy-five feet. The total length of the bridge and approaches would be 7,752 feet. The roadway was to be 252 feet wide between railings and 222 feet wide between curbs, providing an eighteen-inch walkway. [source 1 2]
In 1988 construction began on a new multi-lane bridge, the Veterans' Memorial Bridge, which ran parallel to the old Rainbow Bridge. It was completed in 1991. In 1993 the Rainbow Bridge began renovations to bring the roadway to federal standards; in 1995 construction was still underway. The rehabilitated Rainbow Bridge was to provide two lanes for southbound traffic. Northbound traffic was to use the Veterans' Memorial Bridge, dedicated on September 8, 1990. The navy tender never traveled the Neches River, and no other ship has ever come close to hitting the bottom of the bridge. [source]

First of all apologize for not posting any content last two weeks. I did a road trip from Houston- Chicago to get more new videos for you guys. It was more of a family vacation so I decided to take a little break and spend some time with family. I will be uploading the Road trip to Chicago series on Sunday, so stay tuned.
This video is about famous Rainbow bridge near Port Arthur, Texas. Bridge is currently under construction and will be fully open in 2017.
Here's a little history about the bridge if you're interested. (Information obtained from Wikipedia).
The Rainbow Bridge is a through truss bridge crossing the Neches River in Southeast Texas just upstream from Sabine Lake. It allows State Highway 87 and State Highway 73 to connect Port Arthur in Jefferson County on the southwest bank of the river with Bridge City in Orange County on the northeast bank.
Construction on the bridge began in 1936 under the guidance of the Texas State Highway Department. Due to concerns by the upstream city of Beaumont about the bridge posing a threat to ship navigation, the Rainbow Bridge was built with a 680 foot (210 m) main span. In addition, it has a vertical clearance of 177.0 feet (54 m),[1] which was intended to allow what was at the time the tallest ship in the US Navy, the USS Patoka, passage under the bridge (however, the Patoka never did). However, the height of the bridge did allow the construction of jack up offshore drilling rigs at the Bethlehem Steel Beaumont Shipyard. With seventy-two (72) rigs built, the shipyard was one of the major sources of offshore rigs built in the United States.[2]
The bridge was completed on September 8, 1938. The nearby town of Prairie View took on the name Bridge City in response. Initially named the Port Arthur-Orange Bridge, it received its current name in 1957. The bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Road Trip #288 - US-90 West - I-10 Exit 869: Bridge City through Beaumont, Texas
Road Trip #288 - US Highway 90 - I-10 Exit 869: Bridge City through Beaumont, Texas
Since this video is really about US Highway 90, we continue along the US-90/I-10 concurrency at warp speed until we get to the city of Beaumont, where US-90 travels through town. Here, we slow down and see the town.
At exit 855A, we leave I-10 and head into downtown Beaumont. Beaumont was founded as a town in 1835. The early European-American settlement had an economy based on the development of lumber, farming, and port industries. A big change occurred in 1901 with the Spindletop gusher, which demonstrated the potential of the huge oil field. With Spindletop, several energy companies developed in Beaumont, and some continue. The area rapidly developed as one of the major petro-chemical refining areas in the country. Along with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. Beaumont is home of Lamar University, a national Carnegie Doctoral Research university with 14,966 students, including undergraduates and post graduates. Over the years, several corporations have been based in this city, including Gulf States Utilities which had its headquarters in Beaumont until its takeover by Entergy Corporation in 1993. GSU's Edison Plaza headquarters is still the tallest building in Beaumont.
Prior to the birth of the Interstate Highway system in 1956, the US Highways were the main method of cross-country automobile travel, and in Beaumont, some reminders still remain here on the Old Spanish Trail. Vintage motels and gas stations still remain on what was once the most heavily traveled east-west corridor in the southern United States. Of special note is a former Alamo Plaza Hotel Courts on the right, originally opened in 1938, now operating as the Deluxe Inn. This was one of their 29 locations, and it still retains the unique Alamoesque facade. As I've mentioned in other videos, as a child, I spent many summer weekends at the Alamo Plaza in Gulfport, Mississippi, and it's interesting to see that some of these are still standing. We'll see another one later on in this series.
More about the Alamo Plaza and other vintage hotels:
Some points of interest in Beaumont: Since 1907, Beaumont has been home of the South Texas State Fair and Rodeo, held at Ford Park during March. It is the second-largest fair in the state, attracting more than 500,000 visitors in 2009. The fair features a livestock show, a commercial exhibition, a carnival midway and numerous food choices. The Fair moved from the Fair Park Coliseum to Ford Park in 2004, a new, larger facility on the west end of Beaumont. The fair was previously held in the fall but was moved to spring after hurricanes Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008 caused its cancellation twice within three years. The YMBL Championship Rodeo is held at Ford Park during the South Texas State Fair. The rodeo is an annual event and is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Admission to the rodeo is included in fair admission.
The Gusher Marathon, organized in 2010 by the local nonprofit Sports Society for American Health, is the city's first annual marathon. The Gusher takes place in March and includes a 5K, half marathon and full marathon. The course begins at the Montagne Center of Lamar University and tours Downtown and Lamar before returning to the Montagne.
The Beaumont Jazz & Blues Fest is a Jazz festival held in downtown Beaumont since 2005.
The Boomtown Film and Music Festival is a film and music festival that began in 2008 to replace the Spindletop Film Festival.
Dog Jam is a rock concert held annually at Ford Park.
Each year, a July 4th celebration is held in downtown Beaumont. The celebration includes live music in and around Riverfront Park, a concert by the Symphony of Southeast Texas in the Julie Rogers Theatre, followed by a fireworks display viewed from Riverfront Park.
Each Monday starting in March, the City of Beaumont provides live music and seating at the Event Centre in downtown Beaumont. Ten vendors feature a wide choice of food selections.
On the first Saturday of December, downtown hosts the Beaumont Downtown Winter Parade. The parade features floats that travel down Main, College and Pearl streets. In recent years the parade has also featured a lighted boat parade that travels down the Neches River; spectators can watch from Riverfront Park.

Less than two hours from sea to transit, North America's ultimate direct transfer facility positioned on the Gulf of Mexico to competitively handle any type of commodity.
The ultimate direct transfer facility for international shipping. The Port of Port Arthur completed in the year 2000 an expansion that included all the operating features demanded by the
maritime industry.
The forest products industry wanted and got the finest transit shed to protect newsprint, linerboard, woodpulp, paperboard, plywood and lumber. To give them what they wanted, we not only duplicated the superior quality of our existing shed - we added extra large hanger type doors (36 ft. wide X 24 ft. high); state of the art lighting for 'round-the-clock safe traffic; an enclosed rail and truck apron for all-weather operations; and a storm water drain system throughout the apron dock that includes 36 ft. X 12 ft. door gratings.
The metals industry wanted more open storage and rail accommodations. What they got was an extension of the existing 50 car dockside capacity to150 rail cars for direct transfer; and an asphalt surfaced open storage up to 18 acres.
Need RoRo capability? You've got it - 80 ft. wide with direct rail transfer if needed. When you are tallying up all our assets, remember to include high security that is built into the system that makes the Port of Port Arthur the ultimate direct transfer facility and finest forest products transit terminal in North America.
