New York City - Video Tour of Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Greenwich Village is a small area below 14th Street and west of Broadway. It is famous to have been the home to rebels, nonconformists, beatniks, bohemians and starving artists for over 100 years now. New York Habitat ( ) offers features today a video tour of this great area.
You will find the full article about Greenwich Village on New York Habitat blog
Don't hesitate to discover the other video tours provided by New York Habitat such as Morningside Heights in Harlem or Times Square
Starting in the late 1800s, Greenwich Village became the epicenter of art and music in New York. Artists and musicians from all over flocked to the Village where they found camaraderie, inspiration and affordable housing. The paths of many famous musicians' writers and actors passed through the eclectic streets of Greenwich Village including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Allen Poe, and Mark Twain.
Washington Square Park:
A great place to start our tour of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park. It is home of the famous Washington Square Arch, which was built in the late 1800s to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States.
The interesting thing about Greenwich Village is that the starving artists were the ones who brought charm and appeal to the area. Ultimately the very appeal they created started attracting wealthier New Yorkers, which drove the prices up and, eventually, caused most starving artists to relocate elsewhere in the city.
Luckily, the charm remains strong in the Village and it's a great place to rent a furnished apartment during your next trip to New York. New York Habitat has tons of apartments throughout the Village and all over New York City.
For example, we have this beautiful one bedroom accommodation in the heart of Greenwich Village (NY-7565) which is just a few blocks away from Washington Square Park.
Another great option is this Greenwich Village two bedroom vacation rental (NY-15468) in the heart of the action on Fifth Avenue.
New York Habitat provides great possibilities of accommodations with vacation rentals & Bed & Breakfast in New York City.
MacDougal Street:
MacDougal Street is a one-way street about 6 blocks long in Greenwich Village. It has been the subject of many songs and poems. It's been frequented by numerous famous individuals including Bob Dylan, Matthew Broderick and Eleanor Roosevelt.
Cafe Wha? - at 115 Macdougal Street
Located at 115 Macdougal Street, Cafe Wha? is a club in Greenwich Village that has been home to various musicians and comedians.
West 4th Street Courts:
At the West 4th Street Courts, also known as The Cage, you will find some of the finest street ball players in the country.
The Speakeasy - 106 Perry Street
In the time of Prohibition back in the 1920's, secret bars known as speakeasies sprung up all over the city. Many were located right here in Greenwich Village. American author Henry Miller opened a short-lived speakeasy in the basement of his home at 106 Perry St.
The Friends Building - 90 Bedford Street
If the names Joey, Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel and Phoebe mean anything to you, make sure you visit the corner of Bedford St. & Grove St. in Greenwich Village to pay homage to the Friends' Building. This is the building where the Friends supposedly lived in the hit sitcom we all know and love. In fact, before the producers decided on the title Friends, the working title of the show was Once Upon a Time in the Village.
Narrowest House in NYC -- 75 ½ Bedford St
Coming in at nine and a half feet wide, you'll find the narrowest house in NYC at 75 ½ Bedford St. The Pulitzer Prize winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there for a short while.
If I've missed some of you're favorite Village must-sees, be sure to leave them share them in the comments below.
And don't forget, one of the best ways to experience Greenwich Village is to live there. What better way to live there than by renting a vacation rental apartment from New York Habitat?

Bio:
Corcoran Holt, a son of Washington, DC, began playing djembe and other West African percussion at the age of 4 as a member of Wose Dance Company. As a keeper of the rhythm, Corcoran began his study of upright bass at age 10 with the renowned DC Youth Orchestra (DCYOP). Soon he learned that his great- grandfather, with whom he shares a birthday, was a bass player who grew up in High Point, NC and lived next door to a very young John Coltrane. Legend has it that he gave Trane music lessons. Corcoran feels called to the bass and his work is about honoring the ancestors.
While continuing his classical training at DCYOP, Corcoran attended the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC from 1996 to 2000 where he studied classical bass with Carolyn Kellock, and jazz music with educators Davey Yarborough, the late great Keter Betts and Steve Novasel. During these high school years, Corcoran realized his affinity for the jazz music and honed his performance skills by working frequently on the Washington DC jazz scene.
Always performing, he completed a Bachelors of Arts in Jazz Studies from Shenandoah Conservatory in 2004 where he studied bass with Michael Bowie. He received his Masters degree in Jazz Studies from Queens College in New York City in 2006 under the tutelage of Buster Williams, Michael Phillip Mossman, and Antonio Hart.
Corcoran has been blessed and has worked with numerous pioneers and greats of the music such as Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, Jimmy Cobb, Harold Mabern, Steve Turre, Billy Hart, Kenny Garrett, Javon Jackson, and Wycliffe Gordon to name a few.
Corcoran is currently the regular bassist with the world renown alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett. Holt performs regularly at many of the top music festivals and venues around the world. Some have included The North Sea Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note (NYC Tokyo Milano), and Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola to name a few. Corcoran has performed throughout North, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. In 2009, he toured the Middle East as a Jazz Ambassador representing the United States under the US State Department. In September 2010, he traveled part of The Rhythm Roads tour with Nasar Abadey and Supernova to East Africa, a collaboration between the U.S. State Department and Jazz at the Lincoln Center.
Corcoran is honored to have been a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Bass Competition in 2009.
Currently Corcoran leads his own group and has a new release titled “The Mecca”. He is also a part of three grammy nominated recordings, Kenny Garrett’s 2013 recording “Pushing the World Away” recorded on Mac Avenue Records, Jamison Ross’s 2014 recording “Jamison” recorded on Concord records, and The Baylor Project’s Recording “The Journey” 2017.
Corcoran also works with numerous bands throughout the world and is based in NYC. He also serves as a djembe drummer/music therapist at Greater Harlem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he plays for his elders.
Neo-Nazi 'All White' City In North Dakota?
A man living in North Dakota plans to turn his small town into a bastion of white supremacists, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. I didn't have a clue who the guy was until he showed up. All I know is he bought that house sight unseen, $5,000 cash, and had no idea what it looked like, where it was, other than he knew the directions to get to Leith, Mayor Ryan Schock told the Hatewatch blog. Craig Paul Cobb, 61, has been buying up abandoned property in Leith, a town of only 19 people. He has invited other white supremacists to live on his properties and help take over the city. In a post last year on the Vanguard News Network forum, Cobb said anyone who lives on his property would be required to fly a racialist banner — such as a Nazi flag — 24-hours a day....* Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola (host of TYT University and Common Room), Jimmy Dore, and Michael Shure break it down on The Young Turks.

About Mark Small
Mark Small is a saxophonist/woodwind player/composer who currently splits his time between New York City and Miami. After studying in his home state of Connecticut and attending the New England Conservatory in Boston, he moved to NY where he quickly began working in numerous facets of the New York's diverse jazz scene. He performs with his own band as well as having performed as a sideman for bands such as the Village Vanguard Orchestra and Darcy James Argue's Secret Society (featured on his Grammy nominated debut record) at such notable clubs as the Blue Note, 55 bar, Village Vanguard, and the Jazz Gallery.
Mark can be heard on recordings such as his co-lead band with saxophonist Walter Smith III, Bronze. Released in 2008 (Fresh Sounds/New Talent label) this album features Matt Stevens on guitar, Alan Hampton and Chris Van Voorst Van Beest on Bass, and Bill Campbell on drums. Mark is also featured as a sideman playing on a number of recordings including Jason Goldman's Definitive Standard, Michael Feurstein's Mainframe, Damon Grant's Sonidos Nuevos, Jon Urruri's Carahlo's Castle as well as the soundtrack for award winning comedian Louie C.K.'s show Louie and the award winning short film entitled The Drummer by Bill Block. Rounding out his abilities on the saxophone, he has also been seen performing in the broadway musical Chicago on baritone, tenor, and soprano sax as well as bass clarinet.
Walter Smith IIIs 2006 album, Casually Introducing (FSNT-247), was one of the great debut recordings, receiving glowing praise from the jazz press. The Best Planned City: Olmsted, Vaux, and the Buffalo Park System
From the Library of American Landscape History
Explore the development of the parks and parkways that Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed for Buffalo, New York, beginning in 1868.
A thirteen-minute documentary inspired by the book by author Francis R. Kowsky, published by UMass Press in association with LALH June 2013. The Best Planned City is the third film in the new LALH series North America by Design, available to a worldwide audience.
At the time, this development of connected green spaces as a park system was a revolutionary idea. Olmsted and Vaux's plans drew national and international attention; they were displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, where Olmsted declared Buffalo the best planned city, as to its streets, public places, and grounds, in the United States, if not in the world.

Jazz Docu - Earl Fatha Hines - Blues Alley, Washington DC
A 1975 documentary on the great Blues pianist Earl Hines, one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano.
The film was made at the Blues Alley nightclub in Washington DC for Britain's ITV television channel. The International Herald Tribune called it The greatest jazz film ever made.
In the film, Hines said, The way I like to play is that ... I'm an explorer, if I might use that expression, I'm looking for something all the time ... almost like I'm trying to talk.
